'Idol' basks in fervent fans' glow
Wednesday, April 27, 2005

Star-Ledger Staff

Screams of 'tweens, teens and a few parents greeted Kelly Clarkson Monday night at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.

Proving the audience could multi-task, green glow sticks imprinted with Clarkson's name waved for most of the 75-minute performance.

Clarkson efficiently delivered 19 songs in that time frame, with one costume change. She traded black hip-huggers and a studded belt for a multi-colored skirt that screamed "hippie chick."

Clarkson, who turned 23 on Sunday, is a bit of a screamer herself. She has a powerful voice, but her vocal dynamics are nearly mechanical in their precision. Every song featured her opening the vocal throttle wide, alternating with high-pitched, whispery singing. Top that off with a few melismatic runs, and you have the formula followed by various arena belters.

This is the kind of singing richly rewarded on "American Idol," which Clarkson won in 2002. Lately, she's been trying to distance herself from the TV show, firing manager Simon Fuller and seeking out slightly edgier material.

Will it work? It depends on how one perceives her career arc. She did a "bluesy" set, complete with stripped-down drums and band members perched on stools, performing "What's Up Lonely," "Thankful" and "The Trouble With Love Is." She then moved on to her influences, singing "Piece of My Heart," "The Thrill Is Gone" and "Sweet Dreams."

If this is her preferred direction, she'll soon be writing an autobiography, "Lady Sings the Teals."

However, when Clarkson slows down and takes on a ballad or two, she sounds a lot more credible. The high point of the show was "Beautiful Disaster." Clarkson used all the gadgets in her toolbox, and the performance sounded less like a practice session and more emotionally vibrant. She worked the same magic with "Don't," a song that doesn't appear on either of her albums.

There's nothing wrong with being a pop singer who brings nuance and restraint to the party. You probably won't sell millions of records and you may puzzle the 'tween and teen audience, but it's a risk Clarkson should consider taking.

But for now, she sounds like a lot of nice 23-year-old girls who know how to sing, but don't have the life experience to craft a compelling musical personality.

Perhaps for her audience that's fine. But for some of us, it's not enough.

The Graham Colton Band, fellow Texans, opened the show with a half-hour set of agreeable pop songs. Lead singer Colton looks like the kind of guy who could make you rob your parents to pay his bail, but he's really a nice Southern fellow with a pretty good band behind him. The only problem with the set was overloud bass in the house mix.

Clarkson performs tonight at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan. That show is close to sold out. She will also be part of the lineup of the WHTZ (100.3 FM) Zootopia concert on May 22 at Continental Airlines Arena.

Blues-belting Clarkson truly a talent worth idolizing
By Leslie Gray Streeter

I'm going to make a wacky statement, and I know you're gonna think I've been partaking of something illegal here. But here goes: After witnessing the shockingly soulful, satisfyingly rocky, authentically pop-bluesy set by original American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson at Mizner Park Friday night, I'm confident that if she'd been discovered in some grotty blues club instead of on a glitzy game show she'd get the same props that blue-eyed soul chicks like Joss Stone get.

Yes, I'm serious

I always suspected that when the blond Burleson, Texas, native had a few years between her and Fox's televised talent fest she'd prove that the chops she hinted at on her cover of Aretha's Franklin's Natural Woman weren't a fluke, and that elevated schlock like A Moment Like This to something... a little less schlocky.

Taking the stage to the upbeat independence anthem Since U Been Gone, Clarkson established why her sold-out audience was composed of little girls, their mothers and single gals out on the town old enough to be their mothers.

She oozes sassy but sensible confidence and the sort of DIY self-reliance I'd like my little girls to emulate if I had them.

Heck, I'd like to emulate that myself.

Highlights included the self-written, acoustic Don't, a let-it-all-go churchy take on the ballad The Trouble With Love and a medley of covers, featuring a version of Janis Joplin's A Piece of My Heart so good that... well, you wouldn't believe it.

There is an authenticity to Clarkson, even in her fresh-scrubbedness that makes me excited for every year removed between her and her former TV show, years that will take her amazing talent and make it something even more worth idolizing.

I love the articles you put in there as well.

There's definitely something wrong with me tonight. But I'm loving this line:
