Brad Pitt is going to play gunslinger Jesse James in a period Western that will be directed by Chopper helmer Andrew Dominik and produced by Pitt's Plan B Films. The project is based on the Ron Hansen novel "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford."

In the book, Hansen re-creates the real West with his imaginative telling of the life of the most famous outlaw of them all, Jesse James, and of his death at the hands of the upstart Robert Ford.

James, a charismatic, superstitious, and moody man, holds sway over a ragged gang who fear his temper and quick shooting. Robert Ford, a young gang member torn between worshipping Jesse and taking his place, guns him down in cold blood and lives out his days tormented by the killing.

The book was optioned last year as a co-production between Scott Free partners Ridley and Tony Scott, and Plan B, the Warner Bros.-based company that was run by Pitt, Brad Grey and Jennifer Aniston.

The studio hasn't yet chosen an actor for the Ford role.

ONLY A month ago, Hollywood's golden couple broke the sad news that their fairytale marriage was the Pitts.

So what were estranged husband and wife Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston doing playing the loved-up couple on a secret dinner date in a posh Los Angeles restaurant last Tuesday evening?

To the amazement of fellow diners in the exclusive L'Orangerie in West Hollywood, the pair strolled in hand in hand at around 8pm.

Still wearing his wedding ring, Ocean's Twelve heartthrob Brad and 35-year-old former Friends star Jen were shown to a secluded booth.

But they made no attempt to hide their obvious affection for one another as they spent the next three hours canoodling over a candle-lit dinner.

A source tells us: "Brad and Jennifer came in giggling and holding hands, they looked totally happy.

"It was a complete shock. It was as if the past few weeks hadn't happened.

"Over dinner they were whispering and chatting quite intimately - they couldn't keep their hands off each other.

"It was strange to see, especially after all their recent spiel about separating.

"There have been loads of pictures of Jennifer looking miserable over the past few weeks, but in the restaurant she was beaming. They left holding hands at around 11pm."

Days after their cosy dinner date, 41-year-old Brad was pictured smiling for the first time in weeks.

Standing on a balcony in LA, clutching a bottle of beer and a cigarette, the Troy star flashed a toothy grin to waiting paparazzi.

When they announced the break-up of their four-year marriage, they vowed to "remain committed and caring friends with great love and admiration for each other".

Brad continued to wear his wedding ring, although Jennifer hasn't been seen wearing hers in public since December.

All of which means that Hollywood insiders aren't ruling out a possible reconciliation.

An insider says, "Despite what's happened there's still a lot of mutual respect and affection between Brad and Jennifer.

"The fact that he hasn't abandoned his ring is a clear sign of how much she still means to him.

"Maybe there's too much water under the bridge, but considering how they were acting last week it's more a case of 'watch this space'..."

It seems Brad and Jen are still more than just good Friends. Sorry, girls.
