I took the liberty to use what Tarty compiled and sent to me to post for everyone. I've tweaked -- made minor grammar changes to some of the liners -- mainly for format consistency -- Tarty -- you RULE!! Enjoy!!

DISC 1 – 1958 to 1967

Prelude: A special surprise for you from a friend

1958: Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry. A quintessential rock and roll song by a true pioneer that contains one of the most famous guitar riffs. A cool way to celebrate the year you were born.

1959: So What by Miles Davis. What could be better than to listen to authentic NYC jazz by “the Master.”

1960: Georgia On My Mind by Ray Charles. Since you know about, and have experienced, “Southern Hospitality” – R&B could not be represented any better than by the great Ray Charles Robinson a/k/a Ray Charles.

1961: Stand By Me by Ben E. King. Your fans will always stand by you. You are the best!

1962: The Wanderer by Dion. Because you are able to embrace any place that you happen to be, enjoying what each city has to offer.

1963: In Dreams by Roy Orbison. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him #37 on their list of the “100 Greatest Artists of all time” – Your rank on our list is always #1.

1964: You Really Got Me by The Kinks. A song that has been copied countless times. You are and continue to be unique.

1965: Positively 4th Street by Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan owned 1965 – his riot-inducing electric year. Dave Marsh called this song Dylan’s “icy hipster bitch session.”

1966: (I’m Not Your) Stepping Stone by The Monkees. One of two songs you mention playing in your rock band as a kid. The visual alone is worth the price of admission.

1967: Red House by Jimi Hendrix. Even in 1973, 74, 75, this song was a mandatory play at every house party. Oh, the life of the teenage thought process.

DISC 2 – 1968 to 1977

1968: Back In The U.S.S.R. by The Beatles. Cover of a song originally performed by a rising star and his band from South Jersey, although it could have been the other way around.

1969: Pale Blue Eyes by The Velvet Underground. First verse starts: ‘Sometimes I feel so happy…’ – A song with the words “pale blue eyes” immediately made us think of you, and this makes us happy.

1970: Ohio by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. “In ten lines, Young captured the fear, frustration and anger felt by the youth across the country and set it to a lumbering D-modal death march that hammered home the dread.” – Jimmy McDonough, Shakey: Neil Young’s Biography.

1971: Imagine by John Lennon. A message of hope that we know you believe in.

1972: Space Oddity by David Bowie. Once we heard you sing a snippet in the Aliens episode 100,000 Miles, we knew that this song had to be included.

1973: Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) by Bruce Springsteen. One of your three favorite songs, eh? Sounds like you’re telling on yourself.

1974: It’s Only Rock and Roll (But I Like It) by The Rolling Stones. Gotta have The Stones, right? Besides, it’s so true.

1975: Land; Horses: Land of a Thousand Dances by Patti Smith. You act, you write, you paint, you compose…no wonder you singled out this song in the Variety piece. Wild intensity, fear, pain, ecstasy, violence, peace, love; it’s a streem of consciousness trajectory of a mind, brilliant rock ‘n’ roll poetry.

1976a: Intro to Better Off Without A Wife by Tom Waits.

1976b: Better Off Without A Wife by Tom Waits. What’s life without a wife….more notches on the bedpost.

1977: Hotel California by The Eagles. With youth, inexperience, and a little naïveté, this song speaks to those with dreams to make it in Tinsel Town.

DISC 3 – 1978 to 1987

1978: Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Seger. While disco ‘officially’ died at the Comiskey Park Demolition of 1979, Seger’s “soul soothing” sentiment lives on.

1979: Another Brick On The Wall (Part 2) by Pink Floyd. A song that talks about banding together to break free from oppression of the structured society and explore making your own mark in the world (the beat ain’t bad either).

1980: Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen. A song with Freddie Mercury composed in only 5 to 10 minutes on his guitar. You needed only 1 minute to win our hearts.

1981: All Those Years Ago by George Harrison. George’s loving tribute to John Lennon consoled us all. Humbling to reflect how much John accomplished by age 40, stunning to ponder what might have been. May both rest in eternal peace.

1982: Northern Muse (Solid Ground) by Van Morrison. Like the Northern Muse, you are inspiring, and despite your celebrity status you keep yourself on terra firma. Gotta love Van’s shout out to Dylan with the line, “If you see her, say hello.”

1983: I Love L.A. by Randy Newman. There were several of us who made our first trip to L.A. recently, where our very first impressions matched this song; and we thought it kinda would have been the same with you!!

1984: Doin’ The Things That We Want To by Lou Reed. You may love L.A., and you can take the boy out of the East Coast – but can you take the East Coast out of the boy? This sounds like your perfect day – seeing a play, watching a film, soaking up the energy…Who else but Lou Reed could rhyme “New York” with “brilliant”?

1985: Sun City by Artists Against Apartheid. A protest song with far-reaching impact. Not the first time musicians came together for a worthy cause, but the leadership of fellow Jersey boy Steven Van Zandt made this song truly rock.

1986: Begin The Begin by R.E.M. “Silence means security; silence means approval, on zenith, on the TV, tiger run around the tree, follow the leader, run and turn into butter…” Could this be a theme song for your painting?

1987: Where The Streets Have No Name by U2. Because the memories of U2’s Joshua Tree concerts never fade.

DISC 4 – 1988 to 1997

1988: People Have The Power by Patti Smith. “We can turn the world around…” Inspiration from your favorite homegirl.

1989: Debaser by The Pixies. With Black Francis’s maniacal vocals, the amped-up bass, the radiating guitar, this rock masterpiece is a tribute to another one: the 1929 surrealist film, Un Chien Andalou by Luis Buñel & Salvador Dali. Take care while driving as it’s nearly impossible not to ‘air drum’ during the last 45 seconds.

1990: I Remember You by Skid Row/Sebastian Bach. A little ode to your friendship with Sebastian Bach.

1991: Right Now by Van Halen. Reach for the brass ring – you so deserve it.

1992: Layla (Unplugged) by Eric Clapton. One word – “Classic.”

1993: Mr. Jones by Counting Crows. She’s looking at you, Scott.

1994: Stuff You Gotta Watch by The Band. Why is it that I can’t listen to this song without visualizing the “Clown Prince of Baseball” (Max Patkin).

1995: Days Like This by Van Morrison. A song of perseverance when times may seem on the “lean side.”

1996: Present Tense by Pearl Jam. Your “live-in-the-moment” spirit inspires.

1997: Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) by Green Day. No matter what you chose to do along the way, whether it be baseball, music, writing, painting or acting, we hope ‘you had (and continue to have) the time of your life.’

DISC 5 – 1998 to 2007

1998: Last Stop: This Town by The Eels. In case you are not familiar with the brilliantly twisted world of Mark Oliver Everett (a.k.a. Mr. E or just “E”), here’s an introduction.

1999: Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers. This song is mainly about the dark side of Hollywood. You are always you, and remain true to yourself.

2000: Where You Lead (I Will Follow) by Carole King. This version will always remind us of the year we were first introduced to Luke Danes, a character you brought to life, who gave us seven years of wonderful moments.

2001: I Might Be Wrong by Radiohead. A guitar-oriented song from a group you admire. We would love to hear some music from you someday.

2002: I Am Mind by Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder himself says it best -- We all want to feel safe and be free.

2003: Are You Going To Be My Girl by Jet. Who wouldn't answer yes to that? We certainly would!

2004: Wishful Thinking by Wilco. Beautiful for its genuine poetic lyrics, this is just one of Wilco's many great songs.

2005: Rockstar by Nickelback. A little ditty for your inner rockstar.

2006: Beethoven’s 9th Symphony by Cleveland Orchestra with Measha Brueggergosman. Whether performed with Measha or remembered as Alex’s favorite, the power of the 9th lies in its unmatched beauty, complexity and intensity.

2007: The Saints Are Coming by U2/Green Day. A song which reminds us of how transient life can be, and that one should enjoy every day of his life.

2008: I’m Amazed by My Morning Jacket. A song of possibilities – to dream, to hope, to inspire, to make up your own mind!! Happy Birthday!!

------------------------------

This is some friggin list, isn't it??!!! From my point-of-view, this is just awesome. Only word that pops into my head.

Deborah looks good. I saw one minor spelling error (on Horses it reads streem not stream)

The Tom Waits liner I see we have an a and a b.

For me the bedpost thing even though it's tongue in cheek, it may be a bit to personal. I'm thinking we should go with the mother in law line.

Also I see the U2 Where The Streets Have No Names is all there but on my email version it was not.

Nice catch on the spelling, lulu. It looks like there are two liner notes for Tom Waits, but the first one is for the song's introduction. It uploads as a separate track on the cd, so Tarty is just listing it.

I personally think the bedpost line is funny and is an obvious joke.

Cool Lulu, but if it really bothers you, I'm okay with the change. I don't remember how most people felt about it, and let's face it, I'm not the best person to speak for everybody else as I tend to be a little "out there" so to speak.

I always imagine Scott as having a sense of humor that is full of mischief, vim, and vigor, 'ya know? JMHO

Hey All,

I am opening 1976: Better Off Without a Wife back up for suggestions and discussion. Please look over the suggestions below.

1976: Better Off Without a Wife - Tom Waits. Our tongue-in-cheek salute to bachelorhood.

1976: Better Off Without a Wife - Tom Waits. What’s life without a wife…no dealing with the in-laws.

1976: Better Off Without a Wife - Tom Waits. What’s life without a wife? Here’s a toast to those who: ‘don’t have to ask permission if they want to go fishing … and never have to ask for the keys.’

Thoughts and/or other suggestions???

I like the last one the best, but I think it would be better without the first part. Like this: Here’s a toast to those who: ‘don’t have to ask permission if they want to go fishing … and never have to ask for the keys.’

I loove the last one too and I agree with Nogods opinion about omitting the first part.

Thanks Tarty.

I agree. I like the last choice best, without the first part.
