Just wave to them as they go by, with a big donut in your hand or something.

Lesson 1 completed!!! He cracked me up. We spent 5 minutes just on the seatbelt alone!! touched the keys like it was the button that would ignite a bomb. "I dunno Aunt Dobby -- it that all I have do???". When I finally convinced him it's time to put the car in gear and drive down the road, he drove as fast as that turtle on the Comcast commercials -- the Slowskies. I could have walked faster -- he could have walked faster. We went to my old high school parking lot and practice going into and getting out of a parking spot. No problems there. He's a natural. But he would not attempt it between two cars. "Not enough room Aunt Dobby. No way. Not happening. I just want to continue practicing between two parking space lines." Chicken. But it's a good start. For now, he's going to make sure there's plenty of room between him and another car. I'm the "cool" Aunt.

Cool...at least he got his feet wet. How many behind-the-wheel hours does he need before taking the driving test?

Luke has his learners permit and has taken an exam, and is continuing to take driver eduction. The rules are way diferent from my day that's for sure. He will need to log 60 hours of driving under the supervision of a parent or guardian. Ten of these hours need to be under the cover of darkness. Yup, he got his feet wet alright. Maryland is a tough state for teenagers today. The rules and regulations are much harder in today's times -- and as it should be -- there are a lot of idiots on the roads today -- no wiggle room for newbies behind the wheel -- and the stakes are sooooo high -- between insurance and law suits for any infraction -- I count my blessings. I'm sure he'll be the better for it though.

The rules for getting a license are like that here as well. Glad to hear he did well!

So I'm reading about how a bill becomes a law for school and I'm having Schoolhouse Rock flashbacks! (I'm just a bill, oh, I'm only a bill sitting up here on Capitol Hill.) Do you guys have any random childhood memories like that?

Like Kirk's taxi - (Wish we had MD rules in FL!) Can't believe you have a 16 y.o. nephew named Luke. If he were younger than driving age I'd swear you had something to do with his naming!!! (It is the name on his birth certificate, right?!) BTW I still can't drive a shift. And when I learned to drive - after a couple of family lessons, I concluded the best way to learn was to be taught by a stranger! -> driving school! But I refused to drive around in 1 of those dorky driving school cars with the big plastic ad on top of the car - so I made the teacher take it off during my lesson!

lulu - a non-GG Luke pun - good one, princess lulu!

scooter - OMG - "schoolhouse rock" ... I was too old for that (in my teens) - it was just annoying! - forgot about it - then when I saw "Reality Bites" I realized an entire generation grew up on that and my stomach got butterflies.

Pasadora - excellent vantage point to see a marathon! Very cool!! The NYC marathon is so popular that it's hard to get a spot to watch w/o someone standing in front of you! Hope all's well!!!

Tarty - you are v. funny

Michelle - very sorry about your news. "May her memory always be for a blessing." (I know - weird sentence - but it's from "the Talmud" so it's at least 1,000 years old.I've always liked it.) All my sympathy,K

We have to remember to appreciate it." (bgc)
