Karen, I truly love and enjoy your posts. Every one is so "newsy". I found the NPR articles very interesting and wonder if there are podcasts or tv programs that I can listen and watch. I agree with the blogs listed. I truly do like this show for many reasons -- one of which is that it's entertaining (to me, anyway). If you exclude reality tv and sports, there just aren't that many television programs that grab my attention. Then there are the cop shows; medical shows; detective shows -- and if you exclude them then there really aren't many family, make you laugh shows (there are some). I wonder why NBC turned down Aliens 2 years ago? Couldn't fit it in a timeslot because of the one-hour shows? GG was a great one hour sit-com. In my view, it bombed horribly as a drama for its last year. And GG entertained me for such a long time.

Lulu just told me this morning that the CW is encoring other shows as well on Sunday nights -- Gossip Girl is one other show, I forget the third one. Maybe this is just a chance for CW to fill in slots that have a better chance on Sunday night to bring in viewers for a second bite at the apples. I'm still not convinced that the CW is shopping for another placement for Aliens. I think it's too soon. Maybe shift during one of the mini-breaks -- December, February. Only 3 episodes have aired so far and I can't believe that TPTB didn't think of placement for this show way in advance, knowing about sports events and other shows on other stations as competition for Aliens. And we still don't know why the CW is doing this. Lulu thought that they did this last year as well -- I was too into GG to care about other shows on CW; I haven't a clue. I'm still taking the add-on of 3 more episodes as a good sign that the CW is behind this show and want to see it succeed. If the show is doing so poorly in ratings, wouldn't they just want to cut their losses, pay everyone off and get out? Why dump good money in a bad situation? They wouldn't be making any money there? Even with cheaper filming in Vancouver, look at the set-up of the show. Houses, car(s), school are needed for filming. And from what I saw in Vancouver, it's no WB Studios in Burbank. They film at different places for different scenes all over the City. A totally different concept than the filming of GG in Burbank. And that has to cost money also. This show isn’t set up like the George Lopez Show, where the expenses are really low. I think we need a little more information to make better assessments .

Adjusting the ratings scale will be interesting. I’m curious what kind of a formula they come up with. And, I am also reminded that not one of any of CW’s shows since CW’s inception has been neck-n-neck with any of the Big 3 or Fox’s show. The network is still struggling to keep its head above water. The best we can hope for is that the CW survives and that Aliens makes it consistently as one of its top 5 shows. I’m also thinking about Aliens in a different way too – how many years does this show have in it? Justin is in high school for this year and next (as well as Raja); then it’s what – college? Where’s Raja in this? And if Raja only stays for one year as an exchange student, what happens after one year? Do the Tolchucks want to adopt him or sponsor him to be a U.S. citizen? I haven’t heard of any long-range plans for this show. Then again, we didn’t really hear of long-range plans for GG either until about its 2nd year, right – that’s when we heard from Amy that it was a 7-year plan?

As for the ages of Franny and Gary, I didn't think that the bathroom was a high school bathroom -- too elaborate. It could have been a college one (which isn't that much better), or at a hotel, but a swanky one. They are pushing the envelope on the parent's ages -- but I still think that they are in their early 20s when Justin was conceived. And it will be interesting if we get more insight into Gary and Franny's early relationship in future episodes.

Spoiler:
I thought that Gary loses his job in episode 6 – Help Wanted. I thought from seeing a clip of Franny saying to “dress for success” would end up being ironic that in 2 episodes later Gary loses his job. I’m not sure that the make-up of Gary scene is next week’s Metamorphosis – Scott thought it was in eppy 5 or 6, he said in the interview. And I’m still hoping that it’s a “cheesehead” scene. It’s like they are already preparing us that Gary is a jock – football; and is an avid Packer fan with all the “G” jerseys and shirts. ~sigh~ (Y: Is this a spoiler? How do I make it a spoiler tag? I've lost this capability on my edits for posting -- HA, I just figured it out!!)

Karen, how did you make that “SPOILER” icon??? Being computer challenged can be frustrating.

I never really thought of the long term SL for the show, I guess it's the same with all teen/high school related shows. Being TV they'll come up with something for S2 and beyond.

I don't know when I heard about the 7 year GG plan but it makes sense and makes me wonder why Amy all of a sudden wanted 2 more years after S6, maybe she realised it would take 2 years to dig the show out of the crap she wrote in on simple scene, with April rode up on her bike! She probably though it was a good idea at the time LOL

SPA use the usual : spoiler : thing without the spaces.

I agree. Can't wait to find out more about how they first started out.

Matt Roush, today, Oct. 22:

Quote:
Question: I'm really enjoying Aliens in America, and I worry that people are missing the boat on this surprisingly funny half-hour of television. The second episode was one of the highlights of the week! The ratings are abysmal, and so few people are talking about this show that I'm worried it'll be pulled before others have the opportunity to give it a chance. What do you think about Aliens in America — does it have a fighting chance? Does the fact that it's on the CW work against it? Would its ratings be higher if it had been picked up by NBC or CBS?— Annie S.

Matt Roush: If Aliens were airing anywhere but the CW (except perhaps on cable), its ratings probably would be higher, but given the sorry state of the CW's overall ratings this season, it's probably just as well that a show this offbeat is airing on a network that's likely to let it ride. Despite the low ratings, Aliens in America has had generally good media buzz, which should help keep it around. I like the show, and I especially like the character of Raja, the unfailingly polite Pakistani Muslim exchange student who earnestly tries to accentuate the positive in his American experience despite the comically exaggerated prejudice that keeps confronting him in his Midwest town and school. Aliens tries to be both smart in its satire and broad in its high-school humor (with jokes about porn, among other adolescent sexual obsessions), and the balance doesn't always work, although Amy Pietz is a riot as Raja's frantic housemother. It definitely deserves attention, and an audience, but even the name of Chris Rock hasn't done much to boost the viewership of Everybody Hates Chris these last few seasons. Give the CW some credit for sticking with it.

I think I post this here.

I found an interesting article on MSNBC -- Entertainment Section: 5 Top Fall TV Shows That Should Go NOW Poll. So far, 83,204 people have voted. The results so far:

1. Caveman, ABC
2. Big Shots, ABC
3. Life, NBC
4. The Big Bang Theory, CBS
5. Kid Nation, CBS

What is interesting is that other than the above top 5 from the BIG 3 and Fox networks; here are the other shows that were listed and some of them are CW shows:

Life is Wild
K-ville
Cane
Journeyman
Chuck
Gossip Girl
Carpoolers
Private Practice
Samantha Who
Moonlight
Bionic Woman
Dirty Sexy Money
Women’s Murder Club
Pushing Daisies
Back to You
Reaper
Aliens in America

Now what’s really interesting is that Aliens in America falls exactly in the middle of the pack. In the list above, there are 11 shows that have a less percentile vote than Aliens; and 10 with a higher percentile than Aliens (including the Top 5 That Should Go Now). Even though it’s a popularity poll of sorts, wouldn’t you find this encouraging only 4 weeks into a new season for Aliens? Some shows started in September, have more episodes logged in.

I've only seen a few of those shows here in Australia.

And Life is the only one on the big local networks.

But it season like they just have a list of all the new shows for people to vote on.

Yes, Lancer. I think they just want to find out from viewers which of the "new" shows need to be shut down -- ain't working. Not geared for existing shows.

I still find it encouraging. At least, hopeful.

Well I haven't hear anything really bad about the show and the fact it's on the CW will help it last longer, I think it's a safe bet for a full season.
