Aliens in America 1.08 - My Musky Self ~ Episode Discussion

Quote:
Claire (Lindsey Shaw) forces Justin (Dan Byrd) to become the school's mascot 'Musky, the Fish' but just the thought of performing makes Justin physically ill, so Raja (Adhir Kalyan) takes over the job and the crowd goes wild for his gravity-defying moves. When Raja's enthusiasm leads to a confrontation with a spectator, Justin realizes he must face his fears and make Franny (Amy Pietz) proud.

Meanwhile, when a still-unemployed Gary (Scott Patterson) realizes he is not needed at home, he accidentally stumbles into a relationship with surrogate family who loves having him around.
Sounds good to me! And the promo at the CW site looks cute too!

Gary in a robe. Gary in a short sleeved orange shirt. Gary drinking coffee with other "HHH" workers. Gary driving a forklift (just like Jess did at WalMart. Gary working on the roof (just like Luke). Gary playing basketball (just like Luke -- but better!!). Gary hugging his son. Gary loving his wife to explain to her about his week at "HHH". And Finally, Gary with his arm around his wife in the car together on a rainy day enjoying each other's company.

Oh and the fish was funny too!!!!

Loved the episode...could it be that Gary was in a majority of it....probably!
Scott did a great job and he looked so good. I also loved Raj as the fish...so funny!

Cracked me up when Justin fell over in the fish costume and was thrashing about like 'a fish out of water.'

Raja's delivery of the lines when Justin is throwing up. "Justin are you mad at me?"

Also Raja warning Justin that the fish is evil. Too funny.

Gary was funny. Typical making a mess in the kitchen, ruining the laundry, poor clueless guy.

The pep talk in the locker room was very sweet. But Franny telling the grandma she'll take her out if she doesn't stay away from Gary...priceless.

And Gary called Franny "Baby' before he planted the big smooch on her.

"Why in my backpack?" Ha ha!

The other line delivery that made me laugh was Justin's awestruck "it's like a tampon commercial", when he sees the cheerleaders.

I was a total sap for that scene, "I needed this/I needed this, too" and putting their arms around each other. Very aww. I really liked the whole Gary-centered storyline, it was funny and ultimately touching.

I liked the ep, because it had much Gary/Scott in it. It looks like he is growing more and more in this role, but I still say loose the weird faces....

The kiss was hot, but he needs to work on saying "baby" more sexy...

Man he looks so good, tyhe arms, his chest and the butt

He does need to lose the funny faces but his body sure does look great.
I really love this sensitive Gary, it so different from Luke. I wonder where Scott lies between these two characters?

I like Gary's funny faces -- for the main reason for that it is NOT Luke Danes. I'm weening myself from GG for a lot of reasons, but mainly because the show let me down -- never Luke though -- I've had more sympathy for his position than a lot of people have posted regarding him in Seasons 6 and 7. But Gary??? In a way, I like clueless husbands -- they're manageable -- and I have a feeling that if L/L were to get married and have kids, he would have had just as much a clueless look on him as Gary has now.

Is anyone else other than me -- noticing how the show really isn't -- for the time being -- focused "solely" on the boys?? That there seems to be a lot of time in the show dedicated to Gary's character as in the weekly situations of the boys.

I'm wondering if it's the "Scott Patterson" factor -- keep him in the loop of the show and the viewers (mostly from GG -- the JJs) will continue to watch. I just wonder if this is a strategic move to keep the show alive.

If I'm off the beam here -- let me know (I'm sure you will).

Even without the weird faces he is NOT Luke.

Although I have to admit, there were 2 scenes that made me think of Luke. The one on the roof and the last scene in the car. Not the whole scene, but just those two small moments....

That´s what I think too - The "Scott" factor. And I see it this way, that they get more and more viewers for the show and their repeats every week!

I know what you mean. Happens to me all the time.. that I kind of compare him with Luke.. I know I shouldn't but I can't help it.

I agree, but he wouldn't have the goofy Gary expressions, that's for sure.

I have no problem with the character of Gary being a doofus, and I applaud Scott for taking that on with his typical all-out work ethic. But I think some of the facial expressions need to be toned down. Watching ultimate fighting, getting his tie caught in the garbage disposal, setting his leg on fire, etc., are more than doing the job. The exaggerated expressions are overkill, in my opinion.

Plus they mitigate his incredible sexiness, and who wants that?

Don't get me wrong. I love this show, and I love it because of Scott (though Adhir and Amy are great). Maybe my struggle with Gary is due to missing Luke so much, but I'm trying to objective. I would just like to see Scott balance his portrayal of Gary with a bit more subtlety.

Besides, as any Gilmore fan knows, some of Scott's best moments are nuanced and nonverbal. The famous "salad look" comes to mind, or the overwhelmed look he had on his face seconds after Jess left in LWTTWF.

My favorite scene in Saw IV is his expression right before he told his partner it wasn't her call to warn the cops.

But back to the episode:

The final scene in the car blew me away because Gary's face was natural and serious for a change. What a beautiful man.

The first scene in HHH when Gary is wearing the light brown shirt really shows off his broad shoulders.

Nogods, I agree I'd like a bit more subtlety with Gary's character. Don't get me wrong Scott is funny and sweet but some of it was a bit over the top for me.

You can really see how he works with out dialogue when he was explaining to Franny his feelings but we didn't hear the words, we just saw it. He's got that down perfectly.

I always rewatch the episodes to catch what I may have missed.
