Aliens in America 1.01 - Pilot ~ episode discussion

Justin Tolchuck has nearly everything any teenager could want: caring parents, a popular sister, and his own style. However, the one thing that Justin does lack is a social life. His mother, Franny, tries to fix this problem by hosting a foreign student who can perhaps make Justin popular. However, the Tolchucks are in for a very big surprise when the foreigner turns out to be not at all what they had expected.

Well I thought the show was fabulous and better than I had suspected given the chant of “Give the show a chance.” Scott/Gary is in this episode a lot, I would say not as must as Frannie, but close. Claire seemed to be the character that wasn’t in the episode as much. If you want to critique re-shot scenes with Scott as Gary in it, I would say that one or two scenes were a little offbeat (??), but not so much as to spoil the scene -- the point got across just fine.

I like that Scott is trying to lose his Jersey accent and replace it with a whistling-type Wisconsin, higher octave voice. And Gary’s character isn’t geeky to me. He’s a dad with two -- and now three -- teenagers. The only real hint of Luke was when he was calling the alpacas to feed them: “Come On And Get It.” Old wants and wishes really don’t dissipate, do they?? So, as Scott has said: “Gary ain’t Luke.” There is no ranting Gary.

For me, Justin’s character is going to need some more observation. It’s a little non-descript. To me he doesn’t look old enough to be a junior in high school (16 going on 17) even though in real life he’s 18. Claire does -- way more mature. His voice sounds older when he’s being the narrator of the pilot episode -- talking about his family. He realizes he’s having difficulties fitting-in, in school and wishes he could be different -- but we don’t really know what or how. Does he want to be good in sports?? With Girls??? Socially accepted with more friends? Is he a science geek?? Can’t really tell if he is a honor roll student or not. I noticed that when the guidance counselor, Mr. Carl Matthews, was talking to Frannie about signing up for a foreign exchange student, there was this pin-wheel circle pinned on the wall with labels of “college, work, family, career, military, drop out, jail, and then “loser” -- and he was directing the arrow pointer to “ Loser” when he was talking to her about Justin. Then when you see the pinwheel again the arrow was pointing at college (in the same scene). I thought that was a bit cruel.

And it seems that Claire is not only built like a brick --it house, but she’s also athletic -- playing softball. I wonder if that’s a lead-in for father/daughter interactions in the future? Also, there seems to be teenage sex issues in the future -- just like in GG. Whole different spin on that one though -- different from GG. Also, Claire doesn’t come off being clueless very well. With her rebellious streak I think her character is going to be fun to watch.

Well, Frannie, is a gas. She goes off half-cocked at every turn -- I mean in every scene she was in. And it seems as though Gary is playing the calm one -- calming his wife down when “she’s” on a rant -- and there were plenty of rants in this episode, just not from Gary. Frannie is also talking fast like Lorelai, but the delivery isn’t the same -- LG was way stronger on her mile-a-minute dialogue scenes. Frannie is going to crack me up each week to the point of making me weary. She’s a hoot!!

The character I really could identify with and show empathy for, was Raja. He seemed the most stable. Not too nerdy, needy, not too opinionated -- he just wanted to meet new people and get along and discovered that in Medora, Wisconsin, it’s going to take a little more effort to do that. He really likes the Tolchuck family. Maybe we will find out more of his background as the series progresses. I wouldn’t say that the Tolchuck’s are a typical American family, but normal enough in my view.

I love the show and its concept -- It surprised me -- happily. Count me in as a supporter for Aliens.

Hmm. Am I the only one who thinks the mom was badly miscast? She really grated on my nerves. Hope it gets better.

Loved Raja, and Scott was aok as the dad. I'll watch again next week.

Is it crazy that I loved watching Gary's (Soctt's) on the ottoman? He just couldn't keep them still and I was mesmerize!

Hey Deborah why am I not surprised that you posted first. LOL.

I like the pilot. The voice over reminded me of The Wonder Years. But I think that was to just give us an overview of Justin's intrepretations of his family.

The scenes were very quick and to the point. Scott's accent cracked me up in a good way. The whole trying to make a buck at every turn quite humorous.

Did you all notice no donut scene? But Gary getting the first check was funny. And how many students could they host?

Got to say that Scott was all kinds of fine with those polo shirts. (purely shallow lulu here)

While I could see why people would be upset with the scene in the classroom with Raja it was so rapid fire (like more of the scenes) that i think it did serve its purpose of comparing how Raja handles his upsets vrs Justins Prayers vrs brownies.

But the scenes starting with Frannie telling Raja he was going home to Gary's "Frannie" to Frannie finally realizing Raja was just a boy like any other was a very good ending to a very good first episode.

Sassy you and Deborah both noticing his big feet. You know what they say about a man with big feet.....

lulu........you bad girl......I was thinking the same thing about the big feet saying. I guess we should discuss that more in the dirty thread.

I loves the first episode. I think the writing was great. I really like Justin, Raj & Gary, Frannie may have to grow on me, she bugged me a bit.
I think Scott did a great job and I didn't even think about Luke for that 1/2 hour. I love the way Scott says Frannie when she is in one of her rants.
Overall I thought the show was good and I look forward to next week.
Scott looked so hot in that tight polo and I liked the scene better with him getting the check instead of eating the donuts. I too loved seeing him lounging on the chair, reading the paper with his feet up.

As much as I loved Luke/Scott in his backwards baseball cap -- I'm really loving Gary/Scott and his hair!!! It's looking real good and I think he's letting it grow longer. Still has those curls in the back. Next thing you'll know we'll see him in a pony tail like Silk Stalkings.

I hated his hair! He should get it trimmed.

I also noticed that the donut scene was cut. I liked it!

I totally agree with this statement. I was expecting much less so it was a pleasant surprise. I know I'm prejudice when it comes to Scott but I thought he was excellent. His facial expressions are a wonderful feature he brings with any scene. He can say so much without uttering a word. It's an amazing talent.

I will be watching the show each week and hope it does really well. It sure beats most of the comedy shows on the 4 major networks.

I love Frannie and Raja, but I wasn't a fan of Scott's bad mid-western accent, and the higher voice, and I hate his hair too. I hope he does more than stand there gaping in future episodes too. No doubt it was hard to splice in the reshot scenes, so I guess I'll wait for next week and see if it gets better.

I liked the show more than I thought I would. I thought Scott looked quite good, but his hair was a bit poofy on top there. The accent didn't bother me, but I miss his awesome voice. Hubba hubba. He has such an amazing voice! I do agree though, the way he kept saying, "Frannie!" I did like that very much.

I really didn't like the sister, Claire. I am not really into this slutty teenager mentality that goes on today. The girl had no original thoughts of her own and no morality. That is what I loved about Rory and her friends, they were all much more original and better than that, even Madeline and Louise.

Amy Pietz was okay. I didn't thing she was spectacular. Lauren Graham was spectacular. I guess I shouldn't compare the two. They are two completely different shows. And this show is mostly going to be about the teenagers.

I will watch again next week. I hope Scott continues to have decent size parts in each episode even though the show is mostly about the teenagers.
