To me it was her personal struggles. She was weak at times, and I think we can all relate to that.

That is exactly it.

I think she was portrayed as one of the most real teenagers. Most go through dark phases and she really showed the world how to overcome anything!

I agree, she was never shallow, and she portrayed a lot of things that real teenagers went through.
