Ellie: Friends with benefits? Isn’t that just sleeping around?
Peyton: No, it’s like… It’s like being friends with someone you get to have sex with but you can still hook up with other people too. OK, so you’re right. It’s the same.

Ellie: Sex is easy. But if you find someone you’re in love with who’s also your friend, wouldn’t that be the greatest benefit?
Peyton: I don’t know, it’s a fairytale, I guess.
Ellie: Well, there’s nothing wrong with fairytales. Everyone ends up happily ever after.

Peyton realizing how she still felt about Lucas was one of the most beautiful moments on the show. It literally took my breath away when I first saw it.

I wish they had taken more time with Lucas' side of things in s4 but it was always there, buried the way Peyton's feelings had been since s1.

Oh for sure, when Lucas feels rejected/uncertain/hurt, he hides from his feelings. This was something that was established in mid s1. We saw it over and over again as the show wore on. By time s4 rolled around, Lucas wasn't even in tune with his own feelings anymore. Because of Brooke and because of his own past with Peyton. I think he was afraid to get hurt again so he just tried to be there as her friend when it was clear, to the characters and the audience, that he was still in love with Peyton. When s3 was airing, I used to talk about how Lucas was just burying his feelings so I was thrilled when that theory became canon in s4.
