Since Rory loves music (and I've got the impression Alexis does too) I thought we could discuss music here (GG related or other).

I checked and I don't think there's a thread like this yet, so I hope it's OK I start it. :) And if you come up with a better title, let me know!

Have you discovered any band or artist on Gilmore Girls? A band/artist that you now listen to, have bought the CD etc.?

I 'discovered' The Shins on GG, I haven't actually seen that episode yet, but I heard so much about them on the GG board (mainly from, surprise, surprise, ilovetheshins :D)afterwards that I just had to buy the CD (the second one). And now I love them! :D

Also, I just love Sam Philips' music! Just haven't got the chance to buy her CD yet. :(

This is an interesting topic. It was on GG that I first heard Joey Ramone's version of "It's a Wonderful World", if that counts.

That counts. :) So, what do you think of Sam Philips' music?

Until recently I thought Sam Philips was a guy with a really nice voice. When I listen to it now it sounds weird to me.
I agree with Rory that I just can't get into the Smashing Pumpkins. That was the name of the band right? Well either way the Smashing Pumpkins hurt my ears.

OK, so I owe ASP a significant portion of my music collection. I am a music proselytizer with the best of them. madelen, you know that I love to share! :)

Two bands whom I'm obsessed with that I owe the initial shock of love to GG:
The Shins ("Know Your Onion!" was played in "Like Mother, Like Daughter" in S2)
Pernice Brothers ("Clear Spot" in S2 and "Weakest Shade of Blue" in S4 - two of my favorites - very nice picks there)

I also adore that Joey Ramone version of "What A Wonderful World"

But yeah, as you can tell, The Shins alone (my favorite "find" of this decade thus far) made me one happy obsessive. Thanks to ASP and Helen Pai.

Sam Phillips is nice, but not standout to me. I think she does a fabulous job supplying the la-la's on GG, and her songs are good, but not quite in that obsessive echelon. Maybe in the "solid" category. I only own 1 of her albums, but I would like to get her newest. Not superhigh on my priority list at the moment though.

Yes, and I thank you for that. :) I'm guessing Know Your Onion by The Shins is from their first album, right? I really need to get that one, I only have the second one....:( I've never heard of the Pernice Brothers, but I have to check them out.

Joey Ramone's version of What a Wonderful World? In which epsiode can I hear that one? :look:

What is superhigh on your priority list? :) And what about everyone else? What Cd are you dying to buy right now?

I think XTC is the number 1 as far as music the show has gotten me into. There are bands I love that have subsequently shown up on the show and made me VERY happy, though, like the B-52s and the New Pornographers.

Mostly, I'm a classic rock girl, though. Legendary or obscure--if it's old, I'm just more likely to go after it. :nod:

The CD I was dying for up till really recently was "Bringing It All Back Home," but...I just got it. Right now...god, there are so many in my head, I can't think of any. :spineyes: "A Rush of Blood to the Head" would be one. I'm starting to really feel the hole that the lack of that leaves in my CD collection. Or, maybe if I'm lucky and actually manage to find the complete Woodstock recordings--and I mean, right down to the whole 24-song Who set and the guy screaming that the brown acid was manufactured badly. :nod: That's what it's all about, man. :hippie:

It's from season 2, the episode where Luke is looking for an apartment for him and Jess. It's the song Jess is listening to while he's sleeping when Luke comes in and turns it off. I can't remember the name of the episode, I'm not good with episode names.

And there's no CDs I really want right now. Strange.

madelen, high on my priority list at the moment are the more laidback chill CDs. I have a copy of the Damien Rice CD, but I need to go buy it now, as the guilt is setting in for enjoying some of the songs on "O" way too much. Also, Kings of Convenience and Sufjan Stevens. Yeah, I know, I'm late on getting around to buying these, but it's about time.

High priority would also be buying "Storytelling" by Belle and Sebastian, because that would complete my collection. Then, I would own EVERY one of their dozen+ full-lengths and EPs.

Also, when Eisley drops their first full-length into stores in the first week of February, I'll be all over that. They start their tour off in Houston on Jan 30th, I believe. For now, I have their 2 EPs. For those of you looking for a cool young band to check out, Eisley is different and great in concert.

Airie,, both excellent bands. I remember XTC for the first time when Sarah McLachlan did a cover of "Dear God" for her rarities album. The New Pornographers came to me by recommendation of James Mercer (lead singer of The Shins). How I love these two bands. Seriously, the New Pornographers and all its related outfits (A.C. Newman, Destroyer, Zumpano) are amazing.

I first heard the New Pornographers when I went to a Laemmle (an indie movie theatre chain) to watch I Capture the Castle and they played 2 of their songs over the ads before the previews started.

Same here! I was sitting in a movie theatre and I heard "The Laws Have Changed" and got so excited!

ilovetheshins - so what kind of bands/artists are Damien Rice, Kings of Convenience, Sufjan Stevens, Belle and Sebastian and Eisley? Anything like The Shins or Franz Ferdinand? :) Since I haven't heard of them before...:look: :blush:

Should I include them in my CD collection? :D

Damien Rice is kinda "rainy day," so far as I can tell.

I agree with Airie, Damien Rice is VERY rainy day, have a smoke (or makes you want to), laidback. At first, I wasn't drawn to it, but there is a proper time and calling for some artists so that's why I discovered him later and now love that album.

It's really hard for me to peg The Shins into any category. Genre pigeonholing is so difficult at times.
I have yet to listen to Kings of Convenience or Sufjan Stevens except for one song each, but I'll let you know once I receive and listen to the albums.

Belle and Sebastian are acoustic with accompanying orchestrals (they like strings and trumpets a lot), cute-boppy (but not American "pop") or ironic ballads of social conscience. The band is 6-7 members often with several others on songs - it's a fuller musical sound and yet very sparse melodically. It doesn't sound complicated - it sounds pleasing. If you were to buy one of their albums, "Tigermilk" may be the most representative, the place to start.

Eisley is more multi-electric, with enmeshed female lead vocals at times, Radiohead and Coldplay being their major influences. They sound a bit more eclectic. The music is not "boppy" at all. Sometimes, they use a bit more dissonance that would remind me more of Radiohead, or even My Bloody Valentine. Quite impressive and unique for a sibling-band hailing from rural Tyler, Texas.

I have yet to hear too much of the Libertines, but it seems like Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, and The Libertines fall into the same type of sound.
