Alexis Bledel was born Kimberly Alexis Bledel in Houston, TX, on September 16, 1981. Her first language is Spanish, as her mother, Nanette, is from Mexico and her father, Martin, was born in Argentina. Alexis learned English in nursery school. She has a younger brother, Eric David Bledel (born in 1986). Alexis began acting at age eight after being encouraged by her parents, who wanted her to overcome her shyness. She was involved in many local theatre productions, including The Wizard of Oz, Aladdin and Our Town.

One day while shopping at the mall, modeling agent Page Parkes picked Alexis up as a model. Accompanied by her mother, Alexis worked in many places, including Milan, Japan and Los Angeles during middle and high school.

After graduation from high school, Alexis enrolled in New York University as a film major. Alexis was introduced to her manager, Michael Flutie of Flutie Entertainment and Company Management, and she continued to model (she graduated from Page Parkes Center of Modeling and Acting). Her “lucky break” came when she auditioned for the role of Rory Gilmore in Gilmore Girls. "The producers fell in love with her, and flew her to LA to screen test. They pretty much gave her the job on the spot," says Flutie.

Alexis left NYU afer one year for Los Angeles, as the show was picked up by The WB. (Gilmore Girls airs at 8:00 EST on Tuesday nights in the United States.) Alexis hopes to one day return to NYU to finish her degree.

Gilmore Girls was Alexis's first professional acting job, although she had an uncredited role as an extra in the blockbuster Rushmore. Says her costar, Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore) of Dirty Dancing, "She's one of the most natural actresses I've ever met." Alexis made her big screen debut on October 11, 2002 in the critically acclaimed film Tuck Everlasting, in which she played the lead, Winnie Foster.

In her spare time, Alexis enjoys reading, taking photographs, going to the movies and spending time with her family. She enjoys watching comedies on TV, especially her favorite, Ed. Alexis feels it is important to be a good role model for young girls, and participated in the Seventeen Magazine/Covergirl 2002 Volunteerism Awards and Baskin-Robbins's Third Annual "Free Scoop Night
