I have a language question, but mainly I need English native speakers... if this is not the right place, feel free to slap me on the wrist!
So, I need an English expression/equivalent for something which is called akademisches Klopfen in Germany. The direct translation would be academic knocking. I'm not sure if that is even a tradition that exists elsewhere and I can't find it via google, so I thought I'd ask here. It refers to a form of applause given by a usually academic audience (mostly at universities) after a speech, a lecture etc. People knock on tables a few times instead of clapping. Can anyone help? __________________

Sorry I didn't notice your join date as I just saw you post yesterday. Though if you really only joined yesterday I would say 6 months from then, or thereabouts, to make sure you are familiar with and will be around often
