Theresa.
I was punched in the face by a student today. How did everyone else's day go? Don't worry, when this kid is calm and himself, he does love me. He runs and comes to give me a hug on a daily basis. Even this morning and afternoon. The incident happened 30 minutes before the end of the school day and it was over a color change for hitting another student. I didn't even give him the color change! I was just the punching bag today. For all we go through each day, I still love my job a lot and will go in with a smile tomorrow. __________________

Hey everyone, I hope you all had a great weekend as well. Also there's a volcano that's about to explode here. I hope it doesn't come to that but don't worry everyone, I am very far from where that explosion will happen (if it does).
Hey Theresa! Cece, OMG what? But I guess this is "normal" and it was just an accident? __________________

Lindsay - that's great that you're far enough away from it. Hope it doesn't explode though if there are people who live close to it. Will you get some of the ash cloud or are you far enough to away to avoid that as well?
Cece - wow! So sorry that happened to you. I hope the rest of your week goes much smoother. Sarah - I like Chris in the Star Trek and WW as well. Not sure I have seen him in much else. I bet you and Jess are going to have a blast modding that board. Hi Theresa Thanks for stopping by Hope to see you around more. Hi Chris and Lizzy |

Yikes Lindsay. Hope it doesn't explode! Oh goodness.
Well, this is the first time I got punched in the face by this particular student. He was definitely aiming at me. He has tried to bite me before. He has also hit and kicked me before. He has also pulled on my lanyard that's around my neck really hard. All those things he did today, including the punching in the face that took me by surprise. I was blocking the door so he couldn't run away from us in that state. He also advanced at a co-worker with scissors. Things were thrown. Lots of things. Even iPads - those are expensive! Things were ripped as well. There was another student in the morning who hit her head repeatedly on the ground. She hit it so hard last time it left a red circular mark on her forehead. That's definitely normal in a day of a Special Education teacher, but I would say it isn't or shouldn't be normal in a regular elementary school. We do not have a behavioral or development program on our campus. These students are in general education. Of course the push has been for inclusion, but some students clearly do not thrive in general education classrooms and need smaller settings. When these students are in our classroom (the resource room) when we pull them for more direct instruction, they are fine. These events always happen first in the general education classroom and we are called to help. So I question if that is the case, if general education is the best placement. I promise he likes me. I always feel like I have to tell people that because when he is having a meltdown, he acts like he doesn't know me and whoever is in his way is a target. I feel bad for him, because he hasn't had any easy life. Of course not an excuse for his behavior, but it gives background on why he does go so far. So things like name-calling and such physical actions don't bother me too greatly because by afternoon [if incident happened in the morning], he is giving me hugs again and really chatty. Still, since some events were pretty significant (like advancing with scissors at another adult), I'll take him to apologize to some people in the morning. He will only get bigger and stronger. Sure we will have incidents like this again, but we also need to continue making progress and know how to better handle our anger. __________________

Are you all right Cece? I can relate, I teach kids with behavioural needs and I have been hurt by the kids before. Sometimes they can't control it, other times its chosen behaviour which is far worse. The important thing is we teach them that violence is not the answer but some of them have such troubled backgrounds its all they see.

Theresa. Welcome back to the thread. How have you been?
Cece - Do you have a bruise? It's good that you can realize that you shouldn't take it personally. While "inclusion" sounds goods on paper, I've got to wonder if it's more about the bottom line than what is best for the students. Obviously there are situations where special attention is necessary. Lindsay - yikes! Good to hear that the volcano isn't too close to you! As Amy asked, I'm also curious as to whether you'll be effected by the ash cloud. Sarah, Lizzy, Amy __________________
