A: Yes. You can go to Spinwave.com and use one of their free image crunchers. Simply save the avatar to your computer and upload it into the appropriate cruncher and it will provide a smaller file.

Spinwave no longer offers their gif cruncher for free. But there is another great place here that will do the same thing for free.

You can still use spinwave for free gif crunching here

but not for jpg

If you'd like to use an avatar from livejournal all you have to do is save it to your computer and upload it in the Control panel under "edit avatar". But please make sure that you have permission to use it and that you properly credit it.
