Whats your opinions on the female characters in the show? Do you think that they are clear representations of real women?

Sex and the city: General Discussion Thread #1

I thought we should start this thread so we can keep various topics/discussions/questions together on one thread, I couldn't find another general thread on the board guide so i dont think we have one

I think the female characters in satc are relatable, we may not lead their lives but the topics in the show are something that every woman at one point can understand, the great thing about the characters is the how the four leading women are not completely alike and although we may not have carrie's shoes or Sam's love life I think the topics that come about in each eps for the different characters are very relatable for women everywhere. I don't think they're too far from how my friends and I may talk or act.

I'll have to agree with Emily and say each of the female characters has something we can relate to. Some things tend to be over the top ie: how Carrie can afford all those designer clothes on her pay. But some things are very relatable, such as the relationship troubles or the kinship with the other girls. I find myself talking about some of the same things the girls discuss on the show, when I'm out with my girlfriends. So, to answer your question, I think yes the characters are, for the most part true representations of women.

I also agree, I think that if the girls weren't at least partially representative to what a lot of women go through, the show wouldn't have been so popular. I definitely don't think that every woman can relate to everything that happens on the show, but I do think that most women can find at least one thing that happens on the show and understand what that character was going through. I thought that the breakups were perhaps the most realistic, they're hard and they're messy and the cuts are never permanent. I also think that the friendship between all of the women is also one of the best ones that has ever been represented, there was never a catfight fighting over a guy (which may happen in real life, but never as often as other shows present it) and they all genuinely respected and cared for each other

You know I never really thought about the whole catfight over a guy, thing. I guess the closest we came to that is in the very beginning when Sam tried to go out with Big. But, even then he was more interested in Carrie and Sam let him drop quickly.

Some help required with research

Hi I'm an art student currently studying in Edinburgh, Scotland. I'm doing a research project on the work of Patricia Field, predominantly 'Sex and the City'.

I was just wondering if you could answer some of these questions for me, you dont need to answer them all.

1 Why do you watch Sex in the City?
2 Do you relate to the characters/issues discussed in the series and give specific examples if possible?
3 How big a role do you think the charcters' costumes/outfits play in the series?
4 In your opinion does the show give a realistic portrayal of single women in New York in the 1990s?

thats all for now and thanks a lot!

1. I watch it because it's a good show. Good storylines. I don't think that most people can related to the storylines but it's fun watching them on TV.
2. Not really. Maybe I relate to Charlotte's character. She's the only "conservative/ old fahsioned" type character.
3. I guess a big part. Most shows that are popular with the younger audience do have their stars sport the lastest fashion trends. Which is good!
3. Can't answer this. I personally never lived in NY, i don't know

Can anyone tell me...

Can anyone tell me any acquiring information on the round sun-with-an-outer-rim-looking pendant Carrie wears starting in season 3 episode 4 when she goes on the ice skating date with Sean, the bisexual guy? She wears it several times after, and my sweet mom absolutely loves this piece. I have literally been searching for hours for any information on this pendant and have had no luck. Please help me find a similar piece for my sweet, lovely mother.

Most definetly. I myself, got a name plate necklace simply because Carrie had one. And also a horseshoe necklace. And a Louis Vuitton (cheap one) because I saw it on the show and wanted it.

I relate to Miranda's character alot. She struggles to keep her independance but yet let Steve be her everything. She struggles with letting go of her former self and giving him the reigns a bit. I can see some of her bullheadedness in myself.

Not as much in the earilier seasons, but once it caught on the outfits were a HUGE part of the show. Everyone always said that New York City was the 5th character, but I think that is almost equally shared with the fashion.

I simply love the friendships of the girls. The stroylines with the men are funny, but the friendships the four of them have is what keeps me coming back.

Like diana said, I've never lived in NYC. So I can't say.

sorry these are out of order my copy/paste went nutz.

I have to admit, in the beginning I absolutely adored him. I thought Big was a bit cheesy and over done... then I watched more of season 4 and then I watched the "final break-up" season episodes and it hit me... I get he was hurt, I get the pain that comes with being cheated on, but at the same token, if you can't trust someone, if he couldn't trust Carrie, they did he get back with her. Why on earth would he insist they get married, would that really make him feel better?

I don't know I guess in seeing that episode for the first time (I watched the show in sindication and it was never in order so I received the show on DVD for Christmas - thank goodness)... I just thought he was so sweet, and then realized... he wasn't as sweet as he seemed, and he was sort of a jerk, for jerking her around even more.

In the end - while Big still isn't my style, I am happy to see a girl get her way.
