Episode Discussion- 101 'Sex and the City'

I thought we could start discussions for each episode every week and talk about our favourite scenes and characters Relive our favourite satc moments

"It's like the riddle of the Sphinx... why are there so many great unmarried women, and no great unmarried men?" - Carrie
---

At a birthday party for thirtysomething Miranda, Carrie and her friends vow to stop worrying about finding the perfect male and start having sex like men. Carrie experiments with an old flame and meets Mr. Big; Miranda warms up to Skipper; Samantha has a one night stand with a man Charlotte wouldn't sleep with on the first date.

From HBO.com

I loved this episode and the theme of can women have sex like men without emotion, it really showed that Carrie was an old romantic at heart. I also loved the scene when Carrie and Big first met, bumping into each other on the street and her stuff going everywhere, such a classic Carrie moment.

I loved the beginning of this episode and how it cut to all the different characters, and Charlotte was brilliant with her 'no sex on the first date' rule

The best moment has to be the end of the episode when Big says he get's it she's never been in love and when she asks him if he has, he says 'absof***inglutely'- one of my favourite Mr.Big moment

I always thought it was interesting that Samantha was interested in Big at the start and when he rebuffed her, she went on her merry little way and found herself another guy. What do you guys think life would have been like if it had been Samantha/Big instead of Carrie/Big?

I remember when I saw that I was so relieved that Big turned Sam down I couldn't wait for the Big/Carrie hook up. I don't think Sam would have put up with Big as long as Carrie did, although he does kind of remind me of Richard in a way.

I thought it was hilarious that Sam ended up with the guy that Charlotte would not sleep with on the first date because Sam is such the opposite from Charlotte.

Big and Samantha would have never worked in the long run. At that time, Samantha's attention span with men was like 5 seconds.

I agree but what I did find interesting was that when dude told Sam that she couldn't stay the night because he had to wake up early the following morning and she replied with the same excuse, there was a faint glimmer of disappointment in her eyes. Not sure whether I was seeing something that wasn't there but I feel as though that was the moment of clarity for Samantha. This was it - she was beginning a new life of sex without feeling. Perhaps at that point, she was balancing on the edge of this idea and who knows, maybe she was even secretly hoping that there would be a sign to prove the whole concept unnecessary but I feel that this guy's blatant sex-only objective was enough to push her over that edge and to confirm her ideas that having "sex like a man" was the way forward.

So true Nikki, i think that in that moment Sam wanted to have that same belief as Charlotte that not all men are out there for just sex.

You bring up a really great point Nikki. We know that the character Dominic had broken her heart before and I believe she was tired of it and didn't like feeling so vulnerable. It was easier on her heart to treat men like toys and just have her fun with them. But then Smith opened up that loving side to her again and she knew not all men are ruthless.

I think Sam felt the same way about James, she even admitted she loved him in season 2, and Richard also broke down a barrier, but Smith was the only man who she ever trusted and truely loved. I totally agree I think Sam is more apprehensive about becoming involved with men because she has been hurt before
