Election Night (11/3/04)

jack & bobby: Election Night

Bobby (Logan Lerman) is heartbroken over his break-up with Dex (guest star Jeanette Brox) and decides to get even with Jack (Matt Long) after finding out he is responsible for their split. Bobby's actions cause Jack, Missy (Keri Lynn Pratt) and Courtney (Jessica Paré) much embarrassment and anger, which results in a feud between the brothers. Meanwhile, Grace (Christine Lahti) and Tom (Bradley Cooper) sneak away from the campus election night party to smoke pot, which proves to be a terrible mistake for Grace and her family. The future reveals that in 2040, McCallister wins the election by only a few votes.

Edwin Hodge and John Slattery also star. Keith Samples directed the episode written by Erik Oleson.

NY Post:
ELECTION DAZE

By MAXINE SHEN

November 2, 2004 -- The fledgling political drama "Jack & Bobby" isn't taking any chances - they filmed three different endings to tomorrow night's episode to cover all the possibilities of what could happen in tonight's real-life election.
The highly praised series has scheduled an episode titled "Election Night" for tomorrow - but it is not some fictional election taking place in the future or a corner of made-up Hollywood.

The episode takes place in the days immediately preceding the Bush-Kerry election and winds up at an election night party.

"We actually shot three alternate endings, depending on who wins, or if there's not a definitive result by then, we accounted for the possibility that a 2000-like scenario could play itself out," says Vanessa Taylor, co-creator and co-executive producer of "Jack & Bobby."

The show was under strict orders from The WB to take no sides in the election - or even seem to be leaning in one direction.

"For every Kerry button [a character is wearing], there's a Bush button," Taylor says. "For every time Kerry wins a state, Bush wins a state."

She notes that even within the cast there is a rough balance - ultra-liberal mom Grace McCallister (Christine Lahti) is offset by her neighbor and boss, Peter Benedict (John Slattery), a rock-ribbed Republican.

"Jack and Bobby" is in a hotly contested campaign of its own - against the grandfather of political dramas, "The West Wing," on rival NBC.

Last week, The WB moved "Jack & Bobby" into the timeslot directly opposite "The West Wing." The two series even share the same behind-the-scenes Svengali, Thomas Schlamme, who produced both shows (and is married to Lahti).

So far, "The West Wing" is running roughshod over "Jack and Bobby." But the younger show believes it won't always be that way.

"'The West Wing' has a really strong intellectual core that carries it through, [while] 'Jack & Bobby' is a family show," says Taylor. "The range of information you can talk about on an adult show is very different than what you want to be presenting to a younger audience to keep people engaged.

"The way we're dealing with politics is more metaphorical because we're dealing with the politics of school, family, university campuses - it's not the same as saying 'Hi, we're in the White House.'"

Tonight's episode was done right. I mean ... like they said everything will change after this night, and it did. For Jack, his love life is up in the air. Two of the girls he's been with want nothing to do with him. Bobby is officially lost, and has lashed out at Jack, and in the end still feels lost and alone. Grace is confused, and feels a connection with Tom, which will probably get deeper. And then there's Courtney and her diary, and the sanctity of privacy being threatened by Missy. The show is at a crossraods right now, but overall Jack, Bobby, and Grace are going to be ok. And as for the ending, it was done just right. And the appearance of WB alum Scott Foley in the final minutes was definetly worth watching. Very well done WB, I think you officially have me addicted to this show.

Ken I'm at 100% on what you said. Hi CrabbyCancer69 Welcome to our little home.

Tonights episode was intense. I'm finding a hard time to put into words how great it was. They do tend to be pulling away from the future aspect a little more with each episode.

Bobby was so out of line with telling Missy. I wish Jack would have beat the boy down. I can feel for Bobby's postion and that he was at a emotional stage but man. He had to open up the can of worms. It was really only a matter of time though. Things were going to come out sooner or later.

When Jack hard some trouble saying that he loved Missy I expected her to catch on. I know Jack cares for Missy but is torn between Courtney as well. Things are really tough for our boy and things are just going to get harder....

Bobby telling Dex how he felt was sweet. Very dorky but still sweet. The kid has heart...that's been well established. I want to see a more darker side to Bobby. I don't know how dark they could get though. I mean he is Bobby. As well as him being the established "hero" figure President.

It was really sweet for Courtney to go to Missy like that. Even though she likes Jack she still wants Missy to be happy. Besides, it wouldn't be good to lose the only real girlfriend that she has. Missy was way out of line when she read Courtney's journal. Like Bobby she wasn't in the best state but still.

Grace and Tom were going at the filrting really hard in this episode. We now know for sure that she is attracted to him.

Next week looks very good. Some more Marcus....with Courtney? hmm... I just wish that like Missy they would have some more episodes with Marcus and it looks like they are starting to do that.

I loved tonight episode so much, I didn't even mind Grace. Actually, I liked Grace a lot tonight, and I usually don't like her at all. I think her hot T.A. (I never remember his name) is a good influence on her and is making her a way more likeable character, for me at least. I love how she tried to help Bobby with his breakup, and how she tried to make Jack and Bobby make up. And the last scene in her car with the T.A.? Hot!

Ok, enough about Grace. I felt sorry about Bobby until she told Missy about Courtney. Then I wanted to strangle him. But hey! it was so much fun to see all the reactions. Missy was pretty cool about at first, I love Missy and she is really funny, and I wish Jack could love her more. By the way, when did he told her that he loved her??? I totally miss that! Well, I'll talk about Jack in the Jack appreciation thread

I've only seen a few episodes of J & B and last night was one of them.I don't feel like rambling about the episode so all I'm gonna say is that it was good.

I liked this episode because every character had an integral part thoughout the story.

I could understand why Bobby would tell Missy about Courtney, but still - that must have been awful! I was cracking up over how Grace was trying to resolve the issue between Jack and Bobby - in a diplomatic manner - that would never happen at my house

I was loving the Grace/ Tom scenes - great stuff! I think she's getting jealous that other girls like him

I was upset that Missy would take Courtney's diary - in previous episodes, she was getting away from that stereotypical "cool girl", but I think last night sort of put her into that category again...but that's just my opinion. I could understand she was upset, but she didn't respect Courtney's privacy in her diary.

Let's see...I was SO happy Marcus was in this episode, even though it wasn't that long

I liked seeing Peter in a caring light and helping Bobby out when he passed out.

The scene in the hospital was cute that there was a family moment in there and Grace and Jack were discussing how to help Bobby get through high school normally.

Loved "Election Night"!!

This was only my second episode I had seen. I was unable to watch it on Sunday nights because I always have to work. I was very excited to find out it was now coming on Wednesday nights (nights I hardly ever work anymore). I had seen the first episode when it had its encore presentation. I was immediately addicted to it and was disappointed with its Sunday night timeslot.

I enjoyed this episode. The scene that really stands out in my head is how Grace handles her children's disagreements as she would handle politics. I found it rather ironic or something. Heh.

The car scene was hot. Of course, I agree Bobby needed a beat down for that. I was so pumped up everytime I saw Bobby after that.
