Peter: What *has* this guy done?
Grace: I don't know, I can't recite the specifics, but he was one of the six faceless candidates on the shortlist, you know, each one less distinguished than the last. And I know enough to know what was in his CV. Ugh, please. A vast, safe banality all the decrepit trustees could embrace. Oh yeah, I know this guy.
Peter: Wow.
Grace: Yeah, well, this is me. Thanks for the walk.
Peter: You're welcome.
Grace: You know, you're the only guy I have ever met at one of these things that I've actually enjoyed talking to.
Peter: Really?
Grace: Yeah.
Peter: Well, I enjoyed it too. Maybe we should continue it, say, dinner tomorrow night?
Grace: No, I don't really do that.
Peter: You don't eat dinner?
Grace: Date. I don't date. That ship has sailed. Capsized. I have kids.
Peter: Oh. Me too. Two. Girls.
Grace: Well, girls. Thank God for that. So there's no wife to speak of?
Peter: Out of the picture.
Grace: For now.
Peter: Feels pretty permanent, so what do you say? (Grace opens her mouth to speak) Come on, girl's gotta eat! Right?
Grace: I'm Grace, by the way. Grace McCallister.
Peter: Nice to meet you, Grace.
Grace: Yes, and you ...
Peter: I'm Peter. Benedict. But! My friends? All call me the money grubbing whore. Goodnight, Grace.

Grace: (Barging into Peter's office) Are you aware that the Moonlight Address has been in existence nearly as long as the campus itself, and you cancelled it?!
Peter: Usual salutations are just too banal for you, aren't they Grace?
Grace: Like hundred year old trees, the traditions dating back to the foundering of this institution are essential, irreplaceable and at imminent risk of extinction!
Peter: Okay, I'm just going to kick it off. Good morning, Professor. You're looking wonderful. Please have a seat.
Grace: (Sighing, and speaking fast) Hello President Benedict I hope this morning finds you well.
Peter: It's going very well although I wish there were three more hours in it. And you?
Grace: Oh, also quite well, thank you so much.
Peter: Perhaps you'd like some coffee.
Grace: Oh, no thanks, I'm trying to cut back.
Peter: That's a shame -
Grace: Did you even bother reading the transcripts of the past Moonlight Addresses? No. Of course not. Precious historical artefacts, preserved through time to reveal to us the values and issues of their day. The most famous one, given by President Cobb right after Freedom Summer? Had a tremendous impact on the civil rights movement as it played out on our campus. President [something] himself said that-
Peter: Yeah, I get it, I get it. I'm just not big into speeches, that's all. Hey, did you get the 'hi' I sent you?
Grace: Have you even been hearing me?
Peter: Of course I've heard you. I'm just wondering about the ... the 'hi', that's all.
Grace: Yes, I got your 'hi', thank you very much.
Peter: But you didn't respond, which is funny because I would have thought that you'd be kind of a stickler for etiquette.
Grace: Yeah, well, in most circumstances not involving eighth grade diplomacy, I am.
Peter: Eight grade diplomacy? Hmm, this isn't going very well, is it? (There's a knock on the door) Yeah? (His assistant opens the door and points to her watch) Oh! Right. All right, well Grace, if that's all, I will take my leave.
Grace: Wait! Are you, are you gonna reinstate the Moonlight Address or not? My time is limited here...
Peter: Well Grace, the Moonlight Address is only inspirational as the person giving it, and I am not a great public speaker. I am, however, gonna keep this college on it's feet, and that I'd think would be really inspiring to all the students who really want to graduate from here.
Grace: Right, and is that your full and considered answer, the one with the split infinitive and the flawed reasoning?
Peter: Look, if it means that much to you, take it up with the speech committee, which I believe is next meeting tomorrow night. At the Owl and the Pussycat.
Grace: And why's it at a restaurant?
Peter: Administrative business and [something] needn't go hand in hand, Grace. Be there tomorrow night, 8 o'clock, on the dot.
Grace: And who exactly is on the committee?
Peter: Me.
Grace: Yeah, and who else?
Peter: And me. See you tomorrow night, Grace. (He leaves her looking stunned)
