Debate Thread #1: Debating is fun!
I think a debating thread would be neat to see how everyone agrees or disagrees on a certain question posed. Each week, a new question will be posed and you can feel free to answer it any way you choose as long as it's answered respectfully. I'll start the first question, but after that, future questions can be posted on this thread that will be kept updated and for the next week. Whatever order the questions were posted will be how the questions will be ordered and discussed.
Question of the week: Public Service Broadcasting vs. Ratings Please remember 1. Be respectful - not everyone is going to have the same opinion 2. Support your opinions with details 3. Have fun! Possible Future Questions: Previous Questions: What are your feelings regarding a professor and a TA dating? What do you think about religion? Peter and Grace have both lied to each other now at some point. Which one is worse? Peter for lying to Grace about being on that committee just so she could convince her friend to quit or Grace for saying she was dating a lawyer set up on a blind date? What are your thoughts regarding eastern countries being "Americanized"? If one of your parents had a secret, would you want to know what it was? __________________

Great idea!
I think that professors and TA's should be allowed to date, if certain rules apply. And it would probabley be best if it wasn't the professor and their own TA. But, as long as it's not REALLY impacting their buisness realtionship, it should be allowed. OK, I don't think that was too biased...... |

Great idea! I'm planning on being long-winded with this one so I'll wait until I'm wide awake to write my response.

I'm not going into a huge thoughtful essay here, but I think it's OK. If they're both mature, responsible, and can still maintain a professional relationship then I think it's fine.

I don't think it would be creepy, since I think TA's have to be over drinking age, and teachers are normally around their 40's. I think.......

Like others have mentioned before me I think it's okay for teachers and TA's to date as long as it does not affect their work. It's no one's business but their own of who they are dating.

It is though when the Professor is grading the TA.

I don't think professors grade TA's. TA's are employed by the college, and I think professors just review them.

Yeah but they do review their work and are monitoring them so when it comes time for them to write and present their thesis, the professor will be biased on that particular TA and might not give them the constructive criticism that they need. It just really looks better professionally if they weren't working together.

Yeah. But if they weren't, I think it should be acceptable. I mean, how bad could it be if they were TA-ing for another professor?

Sticking to the debate at hand, I agree with the reviewing/grading argument. One would expect the professor to be biased towards their TA if they were dating them. I know I would be...lol. Professionally, it really doesnt look good. Then again...who someone dates is no one's business. ...oh i cant pick a side. I'm neutral. |

I admit, I'm semi-biased for obvious reasons. But, overall, I do agree with the general theme that, so long as they're legal and not actually "working" together, it should be allowed. What can I say, I'm a helpless romantic.

I'm neutral, too - as long as the professor isn't being biased towards that TA in grading or observing, I think it's fine. I can also see where a university is coming from in that it might not look completely legal or professional, but as many have put it before me, it's nobody's business who anyone is dating.
I'm planning on having this question run for a week, so if you have ideas for future questions, feel free to post them __________________

Thanks Chrissy
You know, it's funny, when you say something like "A professor's dating a TA", it sounds really illegal, but if you think about it, it's hardly a bad thing. Just my two cents...... Hmm, poissble questions: What do you think about religion? Sorry if that one sucks. It should probabley be made a little more focused, but I figured, given the Grace-Hebba theme a while ago, it could be interesting. |
