In the films she seems like a bit of a superfluous character, although to us she is not but then we are Liv Tyler fans of course.

In a subtle way she contributes greatly to the final demise of Sauron's empire. It is Aragorn's fidelity to Arwen that prevents him from reciprocating Eowyn's affections which leads to Eowyn's death-wish heroism on the battlefield at Minas Tirith where she killed the Witch King of Angmar.

Their relationship is one of the most interesting and sad, imagine not only giving your mortality away to a man, but seeing that man being forced to leave you on a quest of epic and suicidal proportions.

At least he is a Dunedain so they may share more years together than Luthien and Beren (I think).

Not as epic as Beren and Luthien. Stealing one of the Silmarils from Melkor? My gut tells me Elessar couldn't do that.

Although Luthien's beauty is meant to live again through Arwen, so they are still on top in the beauty stakes.

Aww, I've always loved these two. I'd say they were my LOTR OTP actually

I remember when the movies re-ignited my love for them I would spend so much time reading fics on them.
