Toby got a whole bunch to do this season. That might be my favorite part of the season other than the reunion in Mother and Child Reunion.

Picspam by faithbreaker.

I was so excited for Jagged Little Pill. And the first time I saw it was...after season 2 I think. This episode was controversial back in The-N days. I think it aired during some marathon before the season 3 premiere. I was more excited for JLP than that. I wonder if I'd be as big of an Ashley fan if it was for this episode (and her fallout from her friends later).

So my fellow Mod and I got this idea of bumping a few episode threads here and there to discuss them all these years later. With the Canadians having their election today (and didn't the new PM use the Degrassi set for a commercial at one point?) we honed in some of the elections episodes, which have usually been pretty fun. Family Politics, in Season 1, was no exception, and thus I re-watched it.

A few thoughts:

-Couldn't help but laugh at Jimmy being the silent man whenever he and Spin do their bully routine.
-This is the episode with Manny's reference to her soon to be forgotten brother.
-In the beginning of this episode there's sequence in which Terri is commenting on Ashley and Toby being just like siblings and then after Paige's "new year new look new Paige" moment, we see her silently mocking her after she walks away. That was a great sequence for her. I wish we had seen more of that version of Terri.
-That device of having the cameras talk into cameras about their feelings about the election was a good way to give us little insights into the characters. Remember, this was the first episode in which we met most of these characters.
-The climatic conversation between Toby and Ashley was a good one, but it did expose some umm...well, let's just say Jake and Melissa would get better.

I'm slowly doing a rewatch of season 1 currently in my hopes to find the time to rewatch the entire series. My last episode was Secrets & Lies. My favorite part of that one was the look on Simpsons face when he sees JT with his legs crossed and his arms around Toby.

Eye of the Beholder aired 11 November 2001. I made an error when searching for episodes aired today...and strangely enough another Terri episode (Never Gonna Give You Up) aired on the 19th. Happy Throwback Terri day?

queerusako-queue-only.tumblr.com

Main Plot
Insecure Terri does not want to attend Degrassi's first nighttime dance because she's self-conscious about her weight and is sure that "no guy would ever be interested in her". Spinner has a crush on her, but Terri is utterly oblivious when he displays interest in her. It also turns out that a jealous Paige wants Spinner for herself and will do anything by playing on Terri's insecurities. She gets Terri drunk thus making her embarrass herself at the dance. In the end, Paige splits the couple up before they have even begun.

Sub Plot
Meanwhile, J.T. and Toby skip the dance to stay home and look at porn sites, but in the midst of their fun, Toby's parents come home and catch them. Furthermore, Emma goes to the dance by herself since Manny's strict parents forbid her to go to a night dance. She feels lonely at first, but she ends up meeting Sean Cameron and they share a romantic dance together.

Because now you want to rewatch it too: Degrassi - The Next Generation | Season 01 Episode 04 | Eye of the Beholder.

(Pre-rewatch thoughts) I just can't believe that Terri didn't end up with Spinner. I suppose him turning her away at the end of the episode was a consequence for her drinking...but damn it it hurts to this day. I'm not really a fan of Terri in the later seasons but in this episode it was impossible not to root for her. I wanted that happy resolution where we wee her happy with herself. Instead she is disappointed again. Her character never really reached that goal of self acceptance. During her whole run she kept restarting. Which is realistic but kind of unsatisfying as a TV viewer.

And the subplot? I think I'm going to have some nice Emma/Sean feels. I liked them early on. "Do you want to dance?" Brave junior high girl approaching her crush...and he's about to fight another guy! Intense stuff.

I forgot how much Ashley/Liberty interact in this season. That's what stood out to me the most in my rewatch of this season.

And Jagged Little Pill makes me wish Sean/Ashley remained friends after deciding not to date. I liked their scenes together.

Wannabe popped into my head the other day and I might have to re-watch that this weekend. I can see some of Emma's anti-cheerleader attitude in my junior high self. I don't know if I realized how judgmental Emma was when I first saw the episode. I think there is plenty of season 1 stuff that goes over our heads because we're like oh, it isn't violence, there isn't a decent message here. Like it isn't intense enough to sit and think about. Anyway...sorry cheerleaders!

"Liberty I have wanted to tell you this for like forever, but I get you. You’re like me, only sorta not. You know?" Yeah, I enjoyed the early Liberty/Ashley interaction too.

Sean/Ashley! Paige was such a life ruiner.

I really appreciate the upload of S1 on youtube. For me it doesn´t have as many likeable and/or interesting characters like former or later seasons but continuity wise it was far better than DH (see my post in the Old School thread).

Some characters are just a bit pale because it´s S1 and they didn´t have that much screen time yet. But just speaking of S1 Emma and Ashley for me are the only interesting/likeable girls. I can´t even say why I don´t like Manny and Liberty but I also didn´t like them in S8 but then I thought it might be because I didn´t know their background or it´s because of the bad dub but now I saw their beginning and I still don´t see anything likeable in them. :/

So in S1 there are far mor male characters I can connect with. It´s kinda funny - in the old series´ it´s been more female characters. And in the current seasons there is a nice balance.

Ashley and Emma were definitely the dominant characters that first season, especially among the girls. It really wasn't until the next season that we started to see focused plots involving Manny, Paige and Liberty.

I wonder how different everything would have turned out in the long run if they had dated.

I loved Terri a lot. She was very relatable. She really stood out to me along with Emma and Manny.
