I´m totally fine with getting a bi character on the show who uses the label - even though I don´t feel the need like you do. I just don´t want Miles to start using a label just bc some fans want him to.
BTW I just rememberd that I´ve bookmarked an interview with Ana and Adamo (after S1 aired) where they talk about the GLBTxxx characters on the show:
https://soundcloud.com/ewradio/degrassi-next-class

It´s really gross what they do on that soap over here - I know of four characters they did this with (two other are really gay and one even labels as bi (nearly forgot about her)). I don´t get it at all. Because other from the label issue their last two GLBT storylines IMO were quite well done and got a lot international attention. They have a new GLBT character on the show right now and I´m waiting what they´re doing with her label wise.

With Zoe I think her only problem would have been her mom. I´m pretty sure that she would have been comfortable enough with Grace to let her friends soon know they´re together. Maybe she would have started casually using the label with the time or not cared to use it at all but a big 'I´m gay' moment I´d only have seen with her mom and even that could a have also been an 'I'm with Grace' moment as well.

Yeah, I guess you´re right with Tristan and Miles. And I think it kinda makes for a nice contrast that for Tristan it makes such a difference that Miles is also interested in girls while Miles probably doesn´t even see a difference between boys and girls. It´s all people to him.

With Miles, I have to agree. The time has passed for that. He's in a relationship with a man and it isn't a secret that he has an attraction to guys in general. But I still do think it was a missed opportunity. I guess I don't understand not wanting characters to label themselves. Many teenagers feel more comfortable using a label. I'll have to listen to that interview.

I replied to the Zoe part of this conversation in her thread.

I actually don´t think so at all bc I think Miles is just the right character to go label free. I still love the breakfast scene where he says 'I like him, why not?'
I´d rather say that maybe Imogen would have been the better character between those two to take the label but as I said, I don´t need anyone in rl and in tv to take on a label.

And I think it has two sides in rl: Taking on a label might be important to some to feel a connection to the community. But taking on the label also means you get dumped a whole bucket of clichés on you. And that´s part of why it´s so unnessesary big to say these words when it shouldn´t be bigger than for someone straight to mention that he/she has a girl-/boyfriend. But I think that some of those who rather wouldn´t take the label take it anyway bc they think society expects them to. And coming back to Miles: His message is 'I fell for a guy. Don´t see a difference to falling for a girl. You need a label to understand that, well, I don´t.'

Really recommend the interview. ^^

I think any opportunity where a bi/pan character could have labeled themselves is technically a missed opportunity. We view this very differently. I still think it's more important to normalize those words so that maybe there will be a little less ignorance about sexual orientation in general and it wouldn't be treated with such derision. Believe me, I'm not saying this Canadian show is going to change the world. Just that it could change the mindsets of some people and make them think a little differently. If we had an abundance of bi/pan characters, I wouldn't care nearly as much if some of them didn't label themselves, but after ten years, it's become a pattern.

I already said it's too late for Miles to use a label and that it does make sense for him not to use one. But still, in general, I do consider it to be a missed opportunity. No, it shouldn't be a big deal for someone to have a different sexual orientation, but it still is.

I think we both want the same final result in regard of how different sexual orientations should be seen but the road to get there is something we see quite differently.

Well, I just think that normalizing those words (if we ever get there) will take much longer than resigning from using labels (meaning other labels which aren´t about sexuality as well). And one point why I think it´ll take so long is that since a few years everywhere pop up new labels making the boxes smaller and smaller and making the whole thing more confusing than better.

Well and I think that Degrassi DOES right that by showing the option that you don´t need to label yourself and get worked up about falling for someone of the same gender. With Triles they show how things should be. No inner and outer homophobia, no closet, just another couple in the hallways. And I think it´s important to also show how it should be instead of only showing how it (at least often) is right now bc that also can suggest it´s normal and okay for it to be like that.

I posted a note to the label discussion in the other thread bc it doesn´t really fit in the Triles thread: http://www.fanforum.com/87638252-post212.html

I replied in the Random Degrassi Ramblings thread because this has mostly stopped being about Triles and I don't want to dissuade anyone from posting here.

degrassi The #BFsOfTheYear deserve a cheesy #NationalBoyfriendDay post

Maybe they also deserve a new opening post in this thread? Anyone want to help out?

these two are so cute, i hated that tristan wasn't in the new series much but i was glad they still included him and had miles so upset over him.

i hated the cheating but i felt it was realistic and well done and i love that he told tristan and tristan forgave him. his little "okay" was really sweet.

So, this story was mainly the one why I hesitated so much to even watch S3 and at least for this one I was right. I´m still happy that curiosity for the other storylines got the better of me and I watched the season cause there were a few I really liked but this one wasn´t.

First thing: It´s not the 'cheating'. I think everyone in Miles' situation would eventually come to the question, when is it appropriate to move on. But I kinda expected him to be desperate and emotional and go for Lola for some kind of emotional release. But that evening he was relaxed and in a much better mood than in most of the scenes that came before.

Other from that I really think that they planned the storyline with Tristan being dead but in the end neither didn´t want to go through with that nor wanted to change much of the storyline. So they only adapted what was totally necessary.
Years back I wrote a story where I knew that a main would die at some point. When I reached that point it was really difficult for me to let him go and I went through a lot of scenarios in my head to maybe have him live on. But in the end none of them felt how the story should be and that's the vibe I get from this storyline.
Tristan´s mother seems to be put in on afterthought. She acts like his nurse or doctor but not his mother. Tristan himself seems to be put in on afterthought in quite a few scenes. I don´t even remember Miles ever giving him a hug after he woke up. And the last scene of the season: I didn´t care as much about his pizza comment but about Zoe and Miles hugging each other and none of them hugging Tristan as if he wasn´t part of the scene.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. I mean I was happy to meet his mom finally but most of his scenes with Miles were like she was his nurse and spouting off medical info and whatnot and there wasn't a whole lot of emotion from her.

Happy to know, too that I´m not the only one who was irritated by it.
