[REWATCH] Degrassi TNG - 201/202 Episode Discussion - When Doves Cry (original airdate CTV Sept 29 & Oct 7 2002)

When Doves Cry
aired as the season 2 premiere of Degrassi: The Next Generation. It originally aired on September 29th on CTV Television and aired edited on October 7th on The-N. The episode was directed by Bruce McDonald and guest stars Hugh Dillion as new student Craig Manning's father. This was Jake Epstein's first episode as Craig. Bruce McDonald and team won a 2003 Directors Guild of Canada Awards for the episode.

As a new school year begins, Degrassi expands into a full fledged high school encompassing Grades 9 through 12. Newcomer Craig catches the eye of Emma and Manny, and makes a friend in Sean, but his home life is less than perfect as he deals with an abusive father. Meanwhile, J.T., along with the help of Toby, is looking to find a date. He chooses Paige, who rudely turns him down. (wiki)

New information I did not know about filming!

Quote:
One of the first things fans learn about Craig is that he’s being abused by his surgeon father, played by the Headstones lead singer and Yellowstone sheriff Hugh Dillon. The episodes were directed by Bruce McDonald, a cult Canadian filmmaker, who, Jake Epstein says, “in between takes would blast Led Zeppelin to get us in the mood.” The two-part introduction felt like a showcase for the young actor, who says the scenes of Craig being beaten up by his dad “were scary and realistic. I just had to hang onto that.”
Source.

I just spent forever digging through my external drive looking for this screencap and was beginning to think I was having false Degrassi memories. Anyway, I think this photo was taken during one of their auditions together and the photo was stuck in the Mannings house. Just another little tidbit about my favorite episode.
