Episode 720 Discussion-- Ladies' Night-- May 26, 2008

If you hear any noise, it ain't the boys, it's ladies' night...

This ep isn't about stickerbooks?

I thought the episode sucked. I don't know if it was the boring story of it all or just that these characters (Holly J,Anya, and Sav) are NOT working for me, still. Well at least Anya finally got some backbone. I was getting so sick of her trailing behind Holly J all the time like she's some goddess, wearing the exact outfit but in different colors.

The subplot was at least entertaining, even if it did involve one of my favorite couples breaking up. But I don't think these two are over just yet anyway.

I thought that the episode was rather poor, I didn't really pay any attention to the Holly J, Sav, or Anya plot whatsoever. For some reason, i'm having a hard time at believing their characters; I'm just not convinced. However, I did like the fact that Anya took a stand for what she believed in.. for once. It really showed a different side of Anya, when she spoke up against Holly J! It's about time she was finally put into her place, which she really needed.

The subplot was not what I was going for, but I got to see my Jay/Manny.. which is always a perk for me anyways. Although, the break up completly blew me by surprise.. I wasn't expecting that one! But for some reason, I think these two aren't over by any means, they'll be a reunion for these two.. it's only a matter of time.

Jay called Manny a bitch - and it made me watching the entire ep kind of worth it.

Really, it was nice to see J/M realize that, yo, maybe they don't really know each other and this marriage thing - kind of rushing into it. Plus, they shouldn't have to change to be together. And as for the A-plot... Anya getting a backbone? Thank you!

I thought that some of the issues brought up were relevant (i.e. Sav taking part in an arranged marriage, dating outside of your culture), just that the way things were played out did not appeal to me. It happens.

I guess I'll ask here. What was that piece of paper that was in the promo? It looked like a letter??

Ohhh, okay.

Well, I'm on the you shouldn't have to change to be together train.

Sav being in an arranged marriage makes him ten times more interesting, but since they haven't developed it yet, he's still flat. Beh.

ETA: Okay, I saw it so I'll add my two cents.

First of all, that Craig guy at the beginning was so adorable. I don't know why I thought that.

I felt like the subplot should've been the main plot, because I thought it hammered in a more realistic message and it had better flow with previous eps. It was nice to see Anya grow as an individual, and for her to realize who Holly J really is. It's like the veil came off (similar to the veil coming off Jay and Manny). But since they weren't developed beforehand, I don't really care as much as I should that Anya's more independant. Plus I found some of the dialogue to be very forced or the delivery was off. I thought Charlotte/Holly J did the best in terms of acting, and some of the others struggled. But still, I did like the charity/awareness angle. They worked that in nicely, though I was surprised Emma wasn't in charge.

Oh, boy. Jay and Manny. You know, I said when WGTB that I didn't like how Manny described Jay, even though she was trying to tick off her parents. So her "hopeless" statement was like an echo from the past. It DOES seem like she has these expectations for him and if he doesn't meet them, she's upset. That's very believable seeing as Manny's the romantic who see what she wants to see, then wakes up. The auction scene was pretty interestng. If I were Manny, I would've offered to sell something priceless of mine. Or can't she chip into her debut money? That's technically what "Jay earned".

As for them as a couple, there's consistent lies and fighting, and it's bad fighting to the point where they belittle the other. I'm not with that.

Cassie did a really good job with the crying scene. That's the first time I've thought that.

I'll give the ep a B-.

Watched the ep today. I think I'm going to have to go against the grain and say that I liked it. It had two things I love about Degrassi: campyness and bringing in an outside source to promote awareness about an issue. There was so many times I burst out laughing during this episode, sometimes for the right reason, sometimes for a not so nice reason. And at the end of the episode I hugged my Degrassi and decided that I'm sticking with them till the end. Well, unless if they make Sav a lead. Hmmm...

I think I might be the only one who likes Holly J but I do. I enjoy the whole bitch factor and I find it more enjoyable than other female leads who unintentionally have that. I'm very surprised that I was interested in the Holly/Anya stuff, especially that scene where Anya breaks down and Holly admits that she's a bully just because Anya lets her. It's interesting how Holly J is such a lonely person but she just can't stop being a bitch. I dunno, call me weird but I enjoy it. But I've never been one to go for characters just because they are nice or bubbly or whatever.

I think I've realized my problem with Anya and Sav...they seem like they are in the 8th grade. It's very strange. Anya has started to develop though and I enjoy it as long as I don't try to think about them as an upperclassmen.

Jay and Manny...sigh. I think I have to go to the anti-thread and vent. You weren't supposed to do this to me J/M!

She did good for that one scene outside of the pawn shop but that other scene...um, I loled. But it was fabulous though. I appreciated Anya's crying scene though.

Agreed. But that's kind of the way I feel about Holly J too. I usually enjoy the bitch character on TV. But I find her to be extremely annoying.

I agree the most with this post. Jay/Manny kept saying "You're not the person I fell in love with" and all I kept thinking was "When did you fall in love exactly?" cause to me it seemed like one day they were pretending to be engaged and the next they really were but I don't ever remember them REALLY getting to know each other. They knew of each other's exploits, then they started to find out there was more but a second after that they were already in a deep relationship. I'm kind of glad it's over.

I liked Holly J's line about how she treats Anya bad because she lets her. I thought that was one of the most honest pieces of dialogue I've ever heard a character utter. All the rest leading up to it though was silly.

You're exactly right about Jay/Manny. So much bad characterization and lazy development based on convenient plot points. What wasted potential. It takes talent to make both of those characters unenjoyable.

I agree. I think that final Anya/Holly J scene is so underrated. From Anya's crying to Holly's delivery of lines. It makes up for their petty fighting. But when you think about it, that's what some high school girls do.

Re: comments about Jay/Manny and how quick they fell in love:
I don't know...I've always felt Manny doesn't need reasons to fall in love. Some days she just wakes up, sees a boy, and is in love. She did this with Craig too, I feel. I'm not saying it's a bad thing; maybe it's what some people do and it works for them. I personally just have given up trying to understand what this girl does in romantic relationships. I enjoy her much more when she's single. As for Jay? Ugh, don't want to think about it. But I guess he does have to be in a relationship for us to see him...sigh.

I enjoy Manny the most when she's single too. I was hoping she'd have a fun, single senior year, but nope. She would really benefit from something like that. I see her as one of those girls that will search well into her late twenties/early thirties, and come up short. Then, she'll stop searching and love will come find her. She'll be like whoa, what's happening here? But yeah, presently, she's just boy-crazy.

I agree for the most part. Manny does fall into relationships easily but I don't think the Craig thing was like that. Initially, her crush on Craig was just that: a crush but even after that disastrous first date, she still wanted him, so I think that was way more genuine than any relationship she's had since. But other relationships definitely had little to no buildup. Though that is the nature of a Degrassi relationship.
