I know that outfit looks awful and so does the makeup. & She definitely does remind me of Liberty in AWH.

I don't hate Clare, but I'm very frustrated with her characterization. I see a great deal of lost potential with Clare, even going back to season 8. The KC/Clare relationship never felt real to me; it was like some teenage girl fantasy. The whole idea that the socially awkward nerdy girl dates the hot guy. (It's not a new concept, of course... tons of teen movies and books feature this plot over and over, but it never feels real.) And then with Eli, the cycle is repeating. My favorite Clare episode is "Innocent When You Dream," and it's a shame that that episode was so recent and Clare's character has undergone a total 180 in season 10. I also think it was great character development for her, that she had these pent-up sexual frustrations despite her religious beliefs and was writing steamy fan fiction to get it out of her system. To me, IWYD was the most true-to-life episode for Clare. It was when I found her most relatable and endearing. It reminded me a lot of those awkward romance situations that happened all the time in Degrassi Junior High (and almost never in TNG, except with Liberty for the first 3 seasons) with crushes and embarrassing first dates that go absolutely nowhere. Because high school is like that! Smart, awkward girls like Clare don't normally have hot guys falling all over themselves to be with them. But Clare never seems to have that problem, even though in seasons 8-9 her personality wasn't exactly sparkling. She was often rude and condescending without meaning to be. If she really struggled with her social awkwardness for years like Liberty did, I would have been rooting for her to get the guy she had crushed on forever. But everything happens so easily for Clare that it's just not compelling to me.
So the "new" Clare of season 10 is particularly problematic for me because she had to be stripped of her physical defects in order to be propped up as the new darling of the show. I wonder, what kind of message is this sending? The biggest change was the removal of her glasses. What's wrong with girls wearing glasses? Apparently a lot. So much that she had to have laser eye surgery just to ensure that we'll never see those glasses again. (You can't take a chance like that with contact lenses! They can tear or fall out!) And we had to make sure we have her new love interest immediately comment on how pretty her eyes are, just to hammer home the message that she can be so much more beautiful if she gets rid of those awful glasses forever. And just in case she doesn't want to really, truly let go of them, we have Eli's hearse to put the final nail in the coffin by running the glasses over and declaring them "dead" (lots of obvious symbolism there). So with them finally destroyed, now Clare can be pretty! And confident! And sassy! Because girls with glasses can't be any of that. |

i don't hate clare, I actually rather like her character now, i did hate her during her and KC's relationship.
It does bother me how her character just did a complete 180. relatively overnight. yes, i mean, it was over the summer but we didn't get to SEE her development. |

I agree about Clare's characterization. The plot about nerd getting the guy is so old. But then again I loved Liberty, because you don't really see nerdy black girls, and not all black girls are ghetto believe it or not. I think that Clare needed something to set her apart, but they just went and canceled out everything that could have been special about her. I think the breakdown with the glasses makes it even more obvious how they want Clare to be the new Emma or whatever. Taking charge of everything with no one standing in her way. The only characteristic left for her to abandon is her religious views, which I don't think ever came up in the first half of season 10. I bet she's going to do whatever Eli says when he wants to take that "next step." I never liked her though so I'm not really sad about where she's headed.

I never liked Clare and what's with the outfit in the promos? Sooo stupid. I always find her boring and couldn't relate to her.

I agree with what you guys are saying, it's only after reading all of this that I realize how much I dislike Clare.

I don't hate Clare and it's not like this show doesn't have a history of doing a 180 with a character's personality just so they can do a storyline no matter how awkward and or out-of-character it makes the person/people involved come across. Peter and Sav come to remind for me when I think about the powers that be doing a 180 with a character just to do a storyline. I think that someone who's part of the powers that be decided that Peter was a senior and now needed friends and while he never seemed as important to the powers that be unless he was dating someone that his transformation was forced and awkward for me as well. I think that Sav's sudden interest in being student council president was done just so he would have a reason to hang around Holly J. I think that after Ryan Cooley/JT died that Liberty was basically ignored until she left the show and I didn't want the end of a relationship to be the thing that completely derailed another character and so I am glad that she gets to have a life post KC. I think that KC has changed a lot as well.

YES to all of the stuff about Clare needing to experience rejection. I think the most interesting Clare/Eli interaction for me was when he told her that he didn't feel anything and she said, "Wow" and was clearly hurt. In that brief moment, I found her relatable and could sympathize with her. But I couldn't sympathize fully because I knew it would work out for her in the end, and of course it did, because everything always works out for Clare. Even Holly J was brutally rejected by Toby (!) in season 7... but the one character you'd expect to see go through that, Clare, never does. Or does for an hour but then everything's peachy. Even KC realized he made a mistake with Jenna and wanted her back. Seriously?! I just can't suspend my disbelief forever.
I want to get back to the point of her religious views, because I'm really curious to see where TPTB are going to go with this. vivalalove, like you said, I don't think her Christianity has been mentioned at all this season, and suddenly she's no longer so straight-laced and naive. (It was only a year ago that she didn't know what a vibrator was for.) We know she made an abstinence vow and I'm seriously wondering if she'll keep it. At this point, I'll be more shocked if Clare does insist on staying a virgin until marriage, considering most of her characterization has been so drastically altered. I might actually respect her more if she sticks by her vow. So I kind of hope she doesn't just because I'll be sitting here rubbing my hands together and waiting for all hell to break loose. Or maybe her fans would instead be celebrating her descent into total character derailment... I don't know. It seems Clare can do no wrong. Literally. |

I wouldn't be shocked if it was never brought up again. Like you said, they have yet to mention anything regarding her Christianity so far this season or her abstinence vow. I don't understand why they didn't bring it up after Fitz jokingly mentioned that he was going to have sex with her to Eli. Obviously Eli doesn't even know she is taking a vow of abstinence, if that still stands. I could see them dropping that storyline as a whole which is pretty sad. Judging by how obsessed the fans of Eclare are, I don't see them caring too much. Most of them want her to lose it to him. To them Clare is perfect and can do no wrong, so even if she does it still won't change their opinion of her.

I also think she needs to experience rejection. But of course, Eli didn't immediately start fawning over her so that's all the rejection she needs.
