Things to give...

My aunt is going in for open heart sugery on the 19th and I will be with her all the way (her and I are really close). I know for a few days she'll be ou and unable do to anything, but I want to get her something so she's not bored (I think she's in there until the 2nd week of September).

My mom suggested a whole gift basket of crosswords and seek and finds. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? I don't know if she'll be renting the tv during her stay.

Yeah, crosswords are a good idea...Or magazines. I had surgery a couple months ago, so I can tell you that after surgery though...She'll be doing a lot of sleeping anyway, especially from all the drugs.

Give her more variety other crosswords and word searches. Try the new hip Japanese puzzle Sudoku. So many are addicted to it now. It's on newspapers like crosswords or you can buy her a book on it just like the crossword books. EXAMPLE

It's just a numbers game but it can come in different levels of difficulty and she can spend her time thinking and correcting....and before you know it, another day passed.

Yeah, just magazines, crosswords, newspapers, her favorite movies if you have access to a TV and VCR, a needlework kit if she likes those.

good things have been mentioned. As for books (great idea!) - paperbacks perhaps is to be preferred? since she might be weak and holding a big heavy hardback might be draining

The hospital will probably give her one of these but a nice soft teddy bear would be great. When my grandpa had his open heart surgery, they gave him one so that when he had to cough or sneeze, he could hug the bear and relieve some of the pressure on his chest. She would probably appreciate one more from you than from the hospital.

A good book

When I was in the hospital as a kid my favorite thing was a wind chime someone gave me. I put it near the bed. It was just something nice to look at.

Also, maybe a photo album or some pics of the family for her bedstand to remind her that she is loved and isn't alone

I hope everything works out for your aunt

All of these are such great ideas...not sure what I could possibly add after all these suggestions to be honest, but I hope her surgery and recovery process goes well...

The idea of getting a light paperback seems especially thoughtful.

As twee as it might sound, something like a romance novel might be nice, too, since those are nicely predictable and positive and non-stress to read.

That's an excellent idea. Maybe you could even have the bear personalized with her name on it.
