iPods

So I really, really wanted an Apple iPod for Christmas, I put it on my list as a combo Christmas/Birthday gift (because of the priceyness).
And then I hear about the whole battery dilemma, how it's impossible to change the lithium batteries that die after two years. I searched around and found some $40 (that's still a lot) batteries online, and really complicated instructions as to how to pop the baby open and put the battery in through all these chips and stuff.

Has anybody had an iPod for a while and the batteries faded? What did you do? I feel like I should just wait a year and see if Apple comes out with a real solution to the battery crap.
