When Did the Word 'Diss' Become Part of Everyday Language?

The origin of the word can be traced back to rap music, but when did it become acceptable for newspaper columnists and television hosts to use it? It seems everyone and their mother use this term now (kinda like the word bling-bling). What word did people use before the word diss became so popular? I wonder what other words from the world of hip-hop will catch on with the mainstream? Po-po? Chickenhead? Hoochie?

Am I right in thinking it comes from the word disrespect?

You mean as in "quit dissing me" or something like that?

I've never really used that word and I don't know many people that do go around saying it. Don't know where you live...

It's American, not english. English is the base, we've adapted it to fit out neeeds. Trousers, knickers, tea, whatever is changed to our society. The Englishish speak english, the Americans speak american, the canaidEns speak canadiEn. And the Aussies say Dubya Tee Eff, mate?
