Cocktail Party
i've been invited to a friend's house at the end of the month for a sit-down cocktail party. naturally, i'm going to be doing some if not all of the desserts, but i have nothing to wear!! all i have are prom dresses - not exactly your "little black cocktail" type dress.
what do i do?!? __________________

The skirt sounds like a good possibility - if you already have heels and earrings or something, you can make it dressy enough and then just wear a simple-ish top that you already have. Try a black top to match with the skirt and then pick an accent colour for the jewellery and shoes (say red, or whatever colour you have). Besides a cocktail party with friends is about having fun and noone will care what you wear - but doing your hair differently or wearing make-up if you don't usually wear much can be enough without an overly dressy outfit.

and maybe to hide that you're wearing a top and skirt, you can wear a belt over it, so it looks like a dress with a belt on top...

pauvre Nikki, a white blouse goes well with anything, if you can't find the right black top to go with your black skirt. And the belt idea sounds good- where the hell is Mal when you need her? I love shoes and bags, but let's face it, I through on the nearest pair of jeans I have- unless they smell.

Do you have any nice shirts that would go good with the skirt. If you have a friend who wears about the same size shirts as you, you can ask them if you could borrow one.

I agree... if you have a glittery top or one with some sequins that would really dress up the black skirt

Do you have anything you can consign or sell like old clothes or CDs/DVDs to maybe get some extra money? If you have something you can wear as far as a skirt maybe just try and find a nice top to go with it if you don't have anything already.
Hell, if they aren't of too much sentimental value, maybe try and find a shop where you could consign your prom dress or put it up on ebay. Maybe then you could get a nice cocktail dress for the event. __________________

So what happens at an actual cocktail party? Do people just drink cocktail drinks and mingle at it? And why do people dress up for them? I've always heard of these cocktail parties but have never been to one.
