The Notebook/Joy and Nicholas Sparks Thread #3: "And, Joy is like, I mean...SHE WROTE A MUSICAL, PEOPLE. It's huge!"

nicholas sparks' the notebook a musical comes to life.

Galeotti & Aniello are a new composing team with the distinct honor of presenting the first-ever Live Theatrical Workshop of a new musical based on Nicholas Sparks' "The Notebook". This is a preliminary step toward an eventual opening in New York.

the team.

BETHANY JOY GALEOTTI

Bethany has been working steadily as an actress and singer since she was about twelve. Her Grandfather, George Lenz, was a regular on the Broadway stage in the 50’s and 60’s (Wish You Were Here, Carousel, By The Beautiful Sea, South Pacific, etc...) and the performance bug passed down to her. Starting out in theatre and making her way to film and television, she has worked over the years with Garry Marshall, Carole King, Mary Tyler Moore, Arthur Allan Seidelman, Frances McDormand, David Straithairn, Paul Sorvino, Fisher Stevens, Valerie Harper, Marisa Tomei, Joyce Carol Oats, Paul Anthony Stewart, Joe Mantegna and more on stage productions, readings and television. She is also currently starring as Haley James Scott in the television series “One Tree Hill” now headed into its seventh season. Bethany recently directed her first episode of One Tree Hill which was met with accolades from crew and critics alike. She is currently recording her third album, this time with EVERLY, her new band. Her second album, recorded under Epic Records was the catalyst for bringing Bethany and Ron together. A few years later, they both decided to take a break from their day-jobs and try their luck in Musical Theatre. Bethany brought her libretto of The Notebook to Ron and the two began finding a magic in their music, and shortly thereafter formed Galeotti & Aniello Productions.

RON ANIELLO

Ron is an award-winning, multiplatinum producer, song writer and musician who has recorded and written a variety of hits for artists such as Lifehouse, Barenaked Ladies, 3 x Grammy winner Jays of Clay, Six Pence None The Richer, Guster, Vanessa Amorossi (Australia’s biggest selling artist 2008) Days Of The New, and Candlebox, among others. In 2001 Ron produced one of the most played radio songs of all time in “Hanging By A Moment “ (Billboard Award winner and American Music Award winner). Notable film scores include Shrek, Disturbia, Blackhawk Down.

Ron was hit with the Broadway bug when Bethany asked him to collaborate on songs for the Notebook Musical. Inspired by the genre in 2008, Ron also wrote the music and lyrics to an offbeat musical called “The Lonely” (based on a twilight zone episode).

Ron grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada and lives and works in Los Angeles, Ca. He is married to Jeanette and has 3 children (one of them is a french bulldog named Pierre).

Galeotti & Aniello are a new composing team with the distinct honor of presenting a new musical test based on the beloved Nicholas Sparks novel "The Notebook".

This work-in-progress was presented with great success in Wilmington, North Carolina during October 2009 and was designed to be used as a creative critique for the authors before it moves into a traditional workshop setting at an Equity level.

Music for The Notebook ranges from American Wartime Standard and Swing to Bluegrass and Gospel.

We extend our sincerest thanks to everyone involved. We will take a short break for the holidays and will post updates as the project progresses.

Best,

Casting Call: The Notebook Musical

Here is some exciting news for the Wilmington area. I spoke with Joy Galeotti (One Tree Hill & Everly) this morning and she is looking for local theater actors for her upcoming musical production of Nicholas Spark's The Notebook. She recently met with Mr. Sparks and obtained the rights to move forward with her musical adaption of the book and her goal is to make it to Broadway. But first, she has to put together a workshop which she is planning to do right here in Wilmington.

If you are an actor/actress and would like to be part of this exciting opportunity, please visit their website for audition information.

Galeotti and Aniello present Nicholas Sparks' The Notebook a Musical

heard here, there, everywhere.

Quote:
Tree Hill’s Galeotti one step closer to Broadway

It’s difficult to contain talent and passion. Bethany Joy Galeotti discovered that with her newest project. “I thought, ‘This is either going to be terrible, or it’s going to be great,’” she reveals in a One Tree Hill podcast. “I don’t know what it’s going to be, but I’ve gotta get this out.” The result will very likely be a hit Broadway musical. You see, Bethany was so inspired by the romantic tearjerker film The Notebook, she began writing songs based on the characters. Nicholas Sparks, who authored the beloved novel (his first) in 1996, embraced her ideas and gave his blessing for the musical stage adaptation. Teaming with record producer Ron Aniello, the pair held auditions for the various roles and hosted a workshop presentation in Wilmington, NC for Broadway producers and investors—who loved the dialogue, story, and especially the music (“Don’t touch it,” they advised). The process now involves refining the play and previewing it in front of still more industry heads in New York. But realize, The Notebook spent over a year on the best-sellers list, and the movie is considered by many to be the definitive Hollywood love story. How can this music original not be a success? Interestingly, Bethany herself once aspired to be a Broadway musical theatre actress. Now, of course, she has a singer/songwriter lead storyline as “Haley” on One Tree Hill, as well as an off-screen career as a soloist and member of Everly. Monday night, she and her TV sisters share the spotlight with their mother in an emotional midseason finale episode, The Last Day of Our Acquaintance.

How is work on The Notebook going? How was the process of taking such a popular novel and film, and turning into a musical?

Bethany Joy- It was a great process. It was a lot of fun. We took it very seriously because we really didn't want to duplicate something that's already been done. We didn't want to just take the movie and add music. We didn't want to just take the book and add music. We wanted to create something that was new for our audience so that when they see it they feel like they're experiencing a classic story in a new way, they feel like they're seeing something for the first time. And that was definitely a challenge because we really do respect so much the work that was done in the film and we wanted to honor that without trying to duplicate or copy, so it's been a really great process.

Ron Aniello my friend and co-writer, who just got nominated for a Grammy this past season so that was really exciting for him, he's just really talented, so we got together and we just started writing and said you know let's just go on this journey together and see where it takes us. And even at this point, where we're at, we're still talking to producers. We want to make sure we don't rush into anything. We have a lot of people that are interested but we need to make sure that we're not just rushing an unfinished product because it'd be great to get it out you know, because everybody wants to see it. We want to make sure that what we put out there as the final product is really honoring to the story and especially to Nicholas Sparks and his family because that story was very close to his family. So it's been great, it's been a lot of fun. We really love our music. We just finished our score and we're doing re-writes on the script right now and just trying to beef up some of the older storylines from our workshop, which is why we had the workshop just for us to kind of watch it and see what we had. And we'll be moving forward from here.

I really hope we get to see it on stage in New York soon!

Bethany Joy- I hope so, too! And there's so many options you know. Maybe it doesn't go straight to Broadway, a lot of shows go on a national tour before they go overseas first. So we have a lot of options right now. We're trying not to rush any decision making. We're just not in any rush. We're enjoying the journey and we've been learning so much about each other and ourselves, our abilities. We just feel like god really has a story here that touches people's hearts and we feel like it's just love that gets to be poured out on people through this story. We don't want to get in the way of that. We just want to help lift it up. So we're excited!

Also I suppose it's okay to mention this now but I found a tidbit about the Musical a month or so ago but didn't want to say anything since it wasn't public yet but the trip to New York that Joy and Ron went on in April - mentioned in the restaurant blog - was actually for meeting theatre producers, apparently there are some big names interested in the project so hopefully that means that finding investors won't be too difficult!

If anyone has the talent, drive and determination to make this a reality, it's Joy. And having heard some of the music that she and Ron have put together for the production, I have full confidence that this will someday be a Broadway hit.

Joy and Nicholas Sparks

Quote:
Q: Speaking of future projects, I interviewed Bethany Joy Galeotti (a “One Tree Hill” cast member) about producing a musical adaptation of “The Notebook” here in Wilmington. What's going on with that and how do you feel about that?

A: It's been an interesting process. And of course Joy and Ron (Aniello), who are working on the project, have done a very good job. Where it goes from here I cannot tell you. I haven't made any decision as to what's going to happen next.

Q: Have you seen it?

A: I did. I came down to Wilmington and I saw it. I thought they did a very good job. I enjoyed it.

No problem on the new thread, guys. And, glad you like the title, too. Lisa was so adorable when she said that.

If I remember correctly, there's a big chunk where he talks about the musical, and then a little something where he talks about his first day on OTH, and how it was Joy directing him and that she knew how he worked as an actor so that really helped.

He also mentioned that Mark went to see one of the workshop productions, I think, and that's he saw him. I love how peeps from the show are supporting her with this, and that they went to see it. Love that.
Eek. That's poopy, Jo. But, thank you for the general idea, and also thank you in advance for writing it out for us if nobody else does.

Count me in as someone who loves how much support she's getting from Team OTH on this, too. I mean, we know from pictures or mentions made by Joy and other cast members that: Paul, Jana, Allison, Scott, Lisa, Cullen, Mark, Joe Davola, just to name some... were all there. We know Lisa's roomate was in it, we know Cullen's wife? was in it, we know... Lisa wanted to do it, but she couldn't get the time.

And, it's been publicly mentioned before that some of the crew from OTH helped with this project, too, right? Some of the makeup, hair, and what not members of the OTH Team were on board this workshop project, as well, I think. I hope that's been published somewhere, I think it has.

So, in so many ways... I love how Joy really incorporated so many talented people who were linked to Wilmington, or OTH, or North Caroline, when it came to casting for this project, or behind the scenes parts of the project, and, I agree, I flove how on the flip side of that, how awesome everyone has been in their comments and praise of what Joy's attempting to do with this, how much belief they've shown in her, how in awe they all seem to be, how complimentary of her talent they all are, and I also love how supportive they're being by showing up, too. It's really cool to see.

^ Good summary of everything. I didn't know that about the makeup! Yeah, a lot of people have mentioned it, haven't they? I'm glad that everything seems to be positive too.

Also, it's great to see the OP. I forgot about Samantha/Shanna/Lyn's site. It's good to see all of the events and stuff together over there.

I want to see this show so bad! I have a lot of musicals I want to see, but when this is official and out there, it'll be somewhere at the top.

THIS. THIS needs to happen in our lives, for sure, at some point. The fact that she told us she was recording the songs, means we'll always know they're out there somewhere, so... I hope this happens. Plus, I've seen other musicals release multiple versions of their songs, ya know, with different talent singing any given song. It's not uncommon, right? They could make this happen in so many ways some day. I'd be lying if I said I didn't hope for this. Please do. PLEASE. Lol.

^^A testament to how many people are have interest and excitement about this project. I can most def see why she's trying to fly under the radar for now, until she gets more of the logistics locked down. Makes sense. The care she's taking with this project is so awesome to see unfold. It seems like the whole process is so thought out.

Ah, sorry this took so long guys! But, I think these are all the parts that Joy is mentioned, except one, but I need to go back and do that bit so I'll add it in. It's not word for word what he said, but it's basically what he said, more or less. LOL. Also, please excuse any typos, I did read back but I did probably miss a few. LOL.

Quote:
Denise: Getting the role on One Tree Hill and what that’s meant to you?
Paul: Well, like you said, I was doing the musical of The Notebook with Joy, and Mark Schwahn, the creator of One Tree Hill came to see the show one night, and I guess he already had the character of Josh rolling around in his head, and saw the show, and decided to have me read for it and ended up casting me.

Denise: You talked a little on how you found yourself on One Tree Hill, maybe we can touch a little one the role you had in Bethany Joy Galeotti’s musical version of The Notebook they did the test run on it here in Wilmington and you were Noah, and you kinda of originated a new role because it a musical so it was new so how was it for you?
Paul: Honestly? And I’m not just saying this, but it was one of the best and most collaborative acting experiences I’ve ever had. I went into audition for it initially because I was working with a director that directed in Wilmington, and had heard about it, and they had contacted him because they were having trouble finding a Noah. I was in New York at the time, and he “was like just wait, don’t do anything yet like wait to see” urm, Paul Fields. So I’m definitely grateful to him. And so I got back to Wilmington and went in to audition, and waited two or three weeks and hadn’t heard anything, and got a call-back after that and urm, went in, and eventually got cast in the role, and I was super excited because I had, I’m not ashamed to say it I enjoyed The Notebook when I saw it. And it was definitely intimidating because I knew a lot of girls had fallen in love with Ryan Gosling, and the first Noah, so it was definitely like I knew that I had big shoes to fill. You know, like I said, Joy, and Ron Aniello who produced it with her were so great and so open to my ideas and, there were times when we would have rehearsals for the show in like, environments in Wilmington that would mirror environments in the script. And I think that came from Joy’s experience in film and TV, and knowing how beneficial it is to be in the real place and not just on a stage, so that was so helpful. And just the music is phenomenal; people know from the show that Joy is a brilliant musician, and, it was just. And I hope that it will move forward, and I hope that I will be able to be a part of it in some way, shape or form down the road.

Denise: Since not everyone got to experience The Notebook; The Musical, you were right there in the middle of it, you were talking about the music, what was favourite music to perform?
Paul: I really liked a song called Sunday Train. It is about when, if you know anything about the story of The Notebook, it’s when they get in a fight, and Allie’s parents make her leave with them, because they don’t think that Noah is good enough for her and they think that she’s meant for bigger and better things than you know, dating a rugged country boy. So he races to the train station, to catch her before she leaves, and he misses the train. He gets this letter that she left for him at the train station and she tells him that she’s gonna come meet him on a train on a Sunday, a year from the day they met, and if he wants to be with her, to reply to her so, it’s about how he goes and he does. It’s about him waiting for that Sunday train. And he goes a year from the day they met and she doesn’t up and so the song kinda spans over a couple of years, so even after she doesn’t show up, after initially she says she’s going to, he keeps going back hoping that one day she will show up on that Sunday Train. It’s one of more contemporary songs of the show, which is one of the reasons I think it appeals to me. It was actually the song we had to learn for the audition, and that was the song, that, you know, made me nervous about auditioning because it made me want to do the show so bad, I immediately connected, I felt I had to do this. So, it was definitely that one song that drew me to the show initially.

Denise: Now Paul, you’re making me really want to hear this song, shame on you!
Paul: You have to talk to Joy about that, she’s kinda secretive about it right now. But we’ll definitely see.
Oh, also, thanks for the new thread Krys! This title is adorbs!

ETA: The bit that I missed. This is his response to being asked what he's learned by being on OTH, I skipped a little, lol.
Quote:
Paul: Like I said, it was my first television gig, and so I showed up on set, and had no idea of what to expect. Luckily, I showed up on set, and Joy was directing my first episode. And I, urm, you know, had just gotten done with The Notebook, and she knew I was green (?) as far as being on camera and she also knew how I worked as an actor, so it was definitely great to have somebody so close to me already on set with me on the first day and to kind of help me through that.

Oh I can't wait for this to happen. I went to see Addam's Family on Broadway yesterday and I couldn't help but keep thinking..... if they can turn a TV show about a monster family into a great musical on Broadway then The Notebook should be a shoe in. My thoughts always traveled back to the likelihood that The Notebook will be coming here very soon and that Joy is responsible for making that happen!!!!! It will be a great addition to all the wonderful shows that are out right now!
