Yeah, it was mentioned that Joy was engaged to someone before she met Michael.

But she said she was glad that it didn't work out because she wouldn't have Maria.

I am pretty sure it was before Maria was born because Joy said that she was glad it didn't work out with him because she wouldn't have had Maria. Assuming meaning that she met Maria's father after that.
