TWO GANGS

A STOLEN WEAPON AND A COVER UP-- Detective Sal Salinger's (Michael McGrady) nightmare comes true when his car slams into a light pole and gang members steal his weapon. Gang Detectives Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy) and Nate Moretta (Kevin Alejandro) arrive on the scene to help out their boss. Moretta reluctantly agrees to assist Bryant in the search for the perpetrators and Salinger's weapon without calling it in. Elsewhere, still preoccupied with her personal life, Detective Lydia Adams (Regina King) is caught off guard when a man exposes himself to her outside her home. Tom Everett Scott also stars.
So Ben and Cooper don't star in this episode?

^They'll be in it, but would probably have a smaller part

I looks like NBC have switched the episodes. The futoncritic now list "Sally in the Alley" as the next Southland episode.

Just watched it, can I comment even though it hasn't aired all over yet?
I'll just put it in the spoiler box

Spoiler:
Ben wasn't in this episode at all (not that I saw anyway, once I realized he really wasn't going to be in it I wasn't paying too much attention)

Ben and Coop (and the other police officers) not being part of the episode was very disappointing, but Kevin/Nate did a lot to ease my pain I loved his storyline, and since I don’t read non Ben related spoilers, I didn’t really seen it coming. The scene of him talking to his sister/daughter in the car was very sweet, as was the scene of him petting his pregnant wife belly.

Sammy and Tammy are kind of cute… in their own weird way…. Tammy is totally crazy, but she's also kind of amusing imo, and I think that it's really cute that Sammy still loves her (enough to buy her a really expensive camera, that he clearly can not afford) despite her craziness.

I also really liked Russell and Lydia in this episode. Russell finally got some screen time and got to show us some of his more caring side (when he gave that kid his mom's cross). and Lydia; I have to admit that while I do have a lot of respect for Regina as an actress, I didn’t find her character all that interesting until this episode, I'm really loving how much she cares and how compassionate she is! This was an awesome episode for Lydia!

I was really bummed not to see Ben and John at all!! I was not really expecting not to have at least one scene with them in it.

I agree Michal, I did not see that scene coming either with Kevin/Nate. I thought he was terrific though. The car scene was very sweet.

I also thought Regina was great in this episode too. The scene with Princess' mother were she teared up was very sincere. She also was very realitstic in how many unsolved cases there are too. Love her passion for her work.

I haven't had time to watch yet, but at least there is Nate/Sammy. Not quite as good a pairing as Ben/John but still fun.

ETA: Just finished watching. Still loved it even without Ben/John, especially Nate and Lydia.

I just watched it and while I was a little sad about the lack of Ben/John I knew that this had to be.
It was not so bad we got to know the other detectives a little and at the beginning of a new show this is not a bad thing.
I was a little surprised about the daughter/sister story line. A little lame in my opinion. Well!
I will accept one episode without our favorite couple once in a while, but I think they are the heart of the show and I want to see more of them.

For a Ben-less episode, I have to admit, I enjoyed it. Actually it was refreshing to "get to know" the other cops on this show.

Yeah I agree it was a OK episode. Even if I missed Ben and John, I could focus on the other cast this time.
Nate is one hot guy and I´m glad that we get some insight in everyone now. But I´m not a fan of Tammy, but I loved how Sam bought her a camera even if he couldn´t afford it. So that means that he truly loves her and wants it to work. Russell I want to know more about until I found him creepy...
Lydia was awesome in this episode she loves her work!

I've watched it twice now and thought it was even better the second time around. I am glad we are finding out more about the detectives. Lydia is an amazing character and Regina King is awesome. In the first few episodes I thought maybe her concerns about Russell were because of something he'd done inappropriately at work and that they didn't really get along that well. But now that we've seen more of them together, I think they are coming across as being friends and having some kind of emotional attachment to each other above and beyond their working relationship. I now think Lydia worries about Russell because he's got a bad home life and she's concerned how that's affecting him.

I am puzzled about how Sammy and Tammy ever got together in the first place, although it's sweet that he bought her that camera that he couldn't afford at all. And Sammy's got quite an explosive temper, which I am sure will be interesting in future.

Nate is lovely, and at least in Ben-less episodes we have Kevin to keep us happy! I would like to see more of his relationship with Mercedes.

And I am very impressed with the casting of the younger actors. So far, Mercedes, Janilla, the young gangbuster who nicked the cross and the girl whose brother was shot in the pilot have all been really good.

ITA. I love Ben to death but it was a very good episode despite him not being in it. The cast of this show is SO good!

I was wondering about this too. She seems to drive him crazy but he still loves her. I guess we'll find out.
