Former O.C. stud Benjamin McKenzie stars as young rookie Ben Sherman in the new NBC drama called Southland. The show is a raw and authentic look at the police unit in Los Angeles. From the beaches of Malibu to the streets of East Los Angeles, Southland is a series that will take viewers inside the lives of cops, criminals, victims and their families. Southland will debut on @ 10PM ET/PT on Thursday, April 9 on NBC. Super Bowl XLIII - NBC: Southland - Video - NBC.com Ben McKenzie: Southland Preview! | Benjamin McKenzie, Southland : Just Jared Ten worth sampling for midseason: 1. "Glee" (Fox) The oddest genre-bending newcomer, a musical soap/dramedy, described by its creator as "Friday Night Lights" for the drama club. It borrows equally from "High School Musical" but with a cooler sensibility. Broadway's Matthew Morrison ("South Pacific," "Light in the Piazza") and Lea Michele ("Spring Awakening") co-star. Morrison plays Will, a 30-something high-school Spanish teacher who has the daunting task of taking over the school's glee club, which is a refuge for geeks. 2. "Nurse Jackie" (Showtime) The nurses, not the doctors, are the heroes in this darkly comic hospital half-hour. Edie Falco ("The Sopranos") is magnificent as a world-weary nurse, a former Catholic schoolgirl, addicted to painkillers, with a difficult home life and a strong set of values that may only make sense to her. Due in late spring, to be paired on the schedule with "Weeds." 3. "No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" (HBO) Based on the wonderful books by Alexander McCall Smith, set in Botswana, a delightful series starring Grammy- winning singer and actress Jill Scott ("Why Did I Get Married?") and Akika Noni Rose ("Dreamgirls"). Stunningly vivid characters are matched by beautiful scenery. Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella ("The English Patient") directed the pilot and serves as executive producer. 4. "Harper's Island" (CBS) Horror is back, and CBS has got it. A group of friends and family gather off Seattle on a tiny island known for a series of unsolved murders. One by one, they turn up dead. The story echoes Agatha Christie, but the gore is closer to slasher flicks. 5. "Castle" (ABC) Think "Murder, She Wrote," but with flirting. Rick Castle, a dashing author of murder mysteries (played by Nathan Fillion), is called upon to help New York homicide detectives solve crimes that are suspiciously like those in his books. No long-term serial plot, no heavy lifting, just a one-hour weekly ride. 6. "The United States of Tara" (Showtime) A bravura performance by Toni Collette follows a woman with dissociative identity disorder (laymen think of it as multiple personality disorder) and her understanding family. Created by Steven Spielberg and developed by Diablo Cody ("Juno"), it's clever, as the alternate personalities come and go, with a notable performance by Keir Gilchrist, as Tara's son. Will it develop beyond a platform for Collette's remarkable performances? 7. "Cupid" (ABC) Rob Thomas remakes his series that failed a decade ago, this time casting Bobby Cannavale and Sarah Paulson. The writers are open-minded about whether the matchmaker is really the Roman god or just a nut job who thinks so. Sweet and easy. 8. "Dollhouse" (Fox) Never underestimate Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"). He's created a universe of "dolls," Actives whose memories have been wiped clean and retrofitted to take on specialized capabilities for a covert organization. Eliza Dushku has the ultimate role: one week a martial arts expert, the next a computer geek. The pilot is absorbing, but the mythology may demand too much attention if it becomes heavily serialized. 9. "Kings" (NBC) The Bible's David and Goliath story is given a modern, vaguely science-fiction update in this hour from creator Michael Green. Ian McShane ("Deadwood") plays the monarch in the kingdom of Gilboa, whose capital, Shiloh, looks like a shiny New York. Aussie actor Chris Egan plays David, a lowly soldier who rescues the king's son. Haven't seen it yet, but I'm curious. 10. "Southland" (NBC) John Wells delivers an ensemble drama about the L.A. police department, built around Benjamin McKenzie ("The O.C."). Not available for preview, but you know if you like Wells' style. The hour gets "ER's" old time slot beginning April 9.
