^ Best of luck with the new job! I am sure you'll have fun.

This article is quite interesting, about the reaction on Twitter to the cancellation.

Twitterverse Gets Nasty Over 'Southland' Cancellation | The Wrap

I think the response to this is really unusual in a strangely positive way. With fans, you can understand us being upset and reacting accordingly. But it seems like there are so many media/industry people thinking this is the most asinine, ridiculous decision. I can't recall seeing this kind of support for other shows that have been cancelled. The circumstances of this seem to have really shocked what is normally a very cynical industry and they are being very vocal about their displeasure. I don't think there was much goodwill around towards NBC before this, and there is even less now.

^I just posted it on twitter. The fans are so great! I have seen so any outrage reactions! and you're right it's not just the fans, the media is on the fans side with this one.

If NBC didn't like 'Southland' why didn't it just keep 'Medium'?

Last May, NBC renewed its freshman cop drama "Southland" for the fall season. The plan was to put it on at 9 p.m. Friday nights. Although "Southland" didn't draw huge numbers when it was on last spring, it had some critical buzz. The dark drama (I'm tired of the word "gritty") followed Los Angeles beat cops and was known for the way it bleeped out swear words to give the show an authentic feel. It sounds hokey but it actually sort of worked.

Anyway, at the same time the brain trust at NBC was deciding to keep "Southland" -- even though they knew it would move from a 10 p.m. time slot to the earlier 9 p.m. slot -- to make room for Jay Leno's prime-time invasion, it decided to cancel "Medium," a softer drama about a woman who solves crimes by talking to the dead. After NBC passed on "Medium," CBS pounced and grabbed it for its Friday night lineup.

This is why Thursday's decision to cancel "Southland" just weeks before its second season got started and substitute the news magazine "Dateline" is all the more confusing. NBC is spinning that the show was just too gritty hardscrabble for 9 p.m. (8 p.m. central and mountain) and indeed we reported over the summer that the network was concerned about the content in the earlier time slot.

But NBC knew last spring when it renewed "Southland" that it wasn't "Leave it to Beaver," so why did it bring it back in the first place? If it was worried about the content, why didn't it stick with "Medium" or try to develop another show? In fact, a lot of industry people were surprised when NBC opted to bring "Southland" back because it would have to go at 9 p.m.. If it was because of the network's respect for and relationship with the show's executive producer John Wells ("ER"), we're guessing canceling it two weeks before it was to premiere and after six episodes have been made stung a little worse than if it had pulled the plug last May.

NBC's move certainly caught Wells and Warner Bros., which makes the show, by surprise. They are now scrambling to try to find a new home for the show, most likely on cable. Even NBC affiliates were taken aback by the abrupt decision.

"That's a little premature," said Michael Fiorile, chief executive of Dispatch Broadcast Group and chairman of NBC's affiliate board, when told it had been canned. "Creatively, I thought it was pretty good show."

The numbers for "Southland" and "Medium" were almost identical. Last season, "Medium" averaged 8.5 million viewers and 2.9 rating in adults the 18 to 49 demographic while "Southland" drew 8.3 million viewers and a 2.7 in adults 18 to 49.

Both did better last year than anything NBC has going on this year, and "Medium" on CBS is getting more viewers than NBC is averaging in prime time. And now NBC has neither.

In terms of cost, NBC paid about $1.5 million in licensing fees for "Southland," and the price tag for "Medium" is in that ballpark, people familiar with the situation say.

Of course, by subbing in "Dateline," NBC will be saving a lot of money in the time period and that can't be taken lightly in trying to figure out what is motivating NBC here. They better save a lot, because so far this season the only business strategy that seems to be working there is the one in which they alienate the entire creative community.

The quality cop show gets canceled before its second season even premieres; NBC insiders call company's decision "an embarrassment."

"Southland" Gets Cancelled!

Southland, a gritty, realistic drama that depicts the dangerous world of L.A. crime, is a superb drama that doesn’t deserve to be treated this way by NBC (who, by the way, also canceled My Name Is Earl earlier this year despite the protests of many die-hard fans). The series boasts an incredible, dynamic cast of gifted actors, including The OC’s Ben McKenzie in a star-making role, Jerry Maguire’s Regina King and Latin actor Kevin Alejandro.

Miraculously (), I figured out how to tweat on other people's profiles, and so I posted on Michael's profile a few of the media links ya'll posted on here...Including the NPR article. Perhaps John Wells could use them when he's shopping the show around to other networks, as evidence of its appeal.

Awww, Michal, "your" Megan...So sweet, HA HA!!! I'm the board's Megan! I'm finally somebody's Megan! Sorry, HA HA, I'm delirious with BOREDOM!!! I don't start my new job until Oct. 19th, and I've been home alone allllllll day, blah!

Actually, I just finished reading it, and the comments below it. Michael ripped NBC a new one in the BEST WAY, MUH HA HAAA!!!

As I've read the various articles and blogs, I've come to the conclusion that Southland has a good chance of being picked up by a cable network...I just hope it's not HBO or Showtime, because my mom doesn't get those channels!

Also, I'm worried that if the show doesn't get picked up, NBC/Time Warner won't release a DVD of Season 1, and of course the website would be taken down...It would SUCK to be unable to watch the episodes ever again!!!

"Our Megan!" *sniffle* I'm so moved!

You're not alone in being pissed off at NBC, Michal! The onslaught from the media and fans is still going strong...

For my part, I just tweeted my rage to NBC -- and made "NBC sucks" my latest status message, MUH HA HAAA!!! Juvenile, I know...But undeniably fun!

And in response to that article about shopping Southland to the networks...Damn, damn, damn! Now I'm worried about the show's future!

True, true! Honestly, I wish John Wells had chosen a different network to begin with...NBC has been a sinking ship for awhile now. I mean, I love The Office and a couple of their new shows are OK, but I only watch/watched NBC for The Office and Southland.

Michal, do we just add #SaveSouthLand and #nbcfail to the end of ALL of our Twitter posts? And will NBC see this? I'm still finding my way around Twitter...

Me too. I said it a while back; I wish he choose CBS. But he had a very long work relationship with NBC and Ben Silverman was very pro-Southland. When they made the Jay Leno move they promised JW that they will air the show at 9PM despite it being a 10PM show and now they're canceling it because it's "too dark" for 9PM. Unfortunately for us, Ben Silverman is no longer there too, so we're really screwed!

Yes at the end of your post. and if enough people would do it, it will be on the "Trending Topics" and NBC will notice.

It's a shame that John Wells' loyalty was rewarded with a knife in the back from NBC!

Thanks for the Twitter guidance, Michal! I actually went ahead and sort of copied what SaveSouthLand did...Hopefully I got it right!

Thanks for all the articles and links, Michal. I am glad the outrage is continuing from all quarters. This is a great and very succinct point.

I am still amazed at how this is being reported, as usually the industry is far more restrained because as Megan said earlier, you never know who you'll end up working with. Like how Ben is always tactful and respectful about people and situations. But this really seems to have riled people up and they aren't afraid to let NBC know what they think of them.

And of course the guy in charge now is reportedly the one who was responsible for green-lighting Dateline....................which is to remain in the slot earmarked for Southland. How convenient!

It is. He did so much for NBC's reputation and their bottom line, and this is how he gets treated. I wonder what Steven Spielberg is thinking right now. He thought Southland was "genius", didn't he?
