| Elite Fan ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | TNT's "Southland" Could Become NBC's Post-Halloween Nightmare TNT's "Southland" Could Become NBC's Post-Halloween Nightmare | BNET Media Blog | BNET You read right. “Southland“, the drama that appeared on NBC last season, before being dropped last month by NBC before it had even aired this season, is now being picked up by cable network TNT. As such, it could become the broadcast net’s worst nightmare — a pointed reminder of why its strategy to put “The Jay Leno Show” on every weeknight at 10 p.m. might not be working out as planned. Here’s why: First, “Southland” was cancelled, even with six new episodes in the can, because its content was considered too out there for the 9 p.m. slot. The only time slot where it reasonably could have aired this season is 10 p.m., but it can’t air then because of “Leno.” Second, TNT will air it at 10 p.m. when it relaunches on the network in January. In other words, it will go up against “Leno.” If you’re thinking that “Southland” doesn’t create real competition for “Leno” because it’s “only” airing on cable, sorry, but that thinking is SO 1990s. As one point of comparison, TNT’s top original series, “The Closer” had an audience that was 49 percent higher than NBC’s “Lipstick Jungle,” which averaged 7.8 million viewers. Though there’s certainly no promise that “Southland” will be a blockbuster on TNT, consider that lately “Leno” has been bringing in about five million viewers per night. If “Southland” draws as many viewers, it will be a PR disaster for NBC, if for no other reason than it makes for good copy. In the big scheme of things, the shift of “Southland” isn’t huge. But as a symbol of how the dynamics of bradcast and cable are changing– and how NBC may have made a major strategic error this year — it’s huge. Channel Surfing 11-6-09 The Murray State News - Channel Surfing 11-6-09 When a show is bad, it gets canceled. When a show is good and gets canceled, fans rebel. When fans rebel, sometimes they get lucky. “Southland” fans, along with television critics, made sure their cries were heard after NBC pulled the plug on the sophomore series. After all, it was critically-liked and did fairly well in the ratings. Then, you know, NBC realized it was more of a 10 p.m. series and since Jay Leno occupies that spot, the gritty drama was not suitable for an earlier time. You’d think they would have come to that realization before picking it up for season two, but it was clearly in their best interest to order more episodes than cancel it before airing them. Why give it a shot? TNT decided to give the show that shot, buying the seven-episode first season and the six episodes finished from season two. The network is hesitant to order more, but they do have the option if the ratings are impressive. I don’t see this happening to “The Beautiful Life.” Ryan Atwood, 1. | Elite Fan ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ^Thanks Hanna ![]() Reader mail: Cable vs. network budgets, 'Grey's,' 'Defying Gravity' and more | New Jersey Entertainment - TV & Film - - NJ.com On the cheap Dear Alan: What is the cost difference between network shows and cable shows? It seems to me USA keeps pumping out hits lately. I know the ratings aren't great when compared with popular prime-time network shows, but if these shows are considered hits in their smaller viewing blocks, what if they got moved to a more friendly time and place? Basically, is the cost such a difference where "Monk" can last eight seasons and be considered a huge success and shows like "Southland" make 10 episodes and are done? — Danny Applegate Alan says: I asked the producer on a scripted drama on a successful basic cable network, and who has experience in network TV. He said, "Our budget is $1.6 (million) to $1.8 (million) per episode. And we shoot in seven days. A network show shoots at least eight days and typically has a budget of close to $3 million. So it is very significant. You have to do more with less." And because the shows cost so much less, the threshold for success is much lower on cable vs. network. (Cable networks also benefit from a dual revenue stream, where they get money from both advertisers and from cable companies, whereas the broadcast nets get only the ad dollars.) Would some basic cable hits get bigger numbers on a broadcast platform? Almost certainly, in the same way that a Big Four network show's ratings go down if it moves to a smaller network or cable. But cable channels don't like to give up valuable assets, even to broadcast corporate siblings, so we tend to see these shows on a network only when they're in reruns. And speaking of "Southland," though NBC canceled it without airing a single episode of season two, TNT has picked up the cop drama. It'll start showing the seven episodes of season one on Jan. 12, followed by the six episodes of season two that were produced before NBC pulled the plug. If the ratings are good, there's always a chance TNT could order more — with the caveat, of course, that the budget would almost certainly be much lower. __________________ Icon:Hayat If you pursue the pop-culture thing and indulge yourself in it, go to all the events and get yourself on the cover of Us Weekly every week, that fame is fleeting,It's not a road you can navigate for a long time. Exclusive: 'Southland' Star Shawn Hatosy Found Cancellation "Devastating" Exclusive: 'Southland' Star Shawn Hatosy Found Cancellation "Devastating" - Inside TV Even after TNT granted a reprieve to NBC's canceled 'Southland,' one of its stars is voicing the frustration of a cast member let go. "I will tell you what, man -- I watched the first episode of the second season before we were canceled," star Shawn Hatosy told us at the premiere of his new drama, 'Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call NewOrleans,' on Wednesday at AFI Fest in Hollywood. "It was the first time I ever let my guard down, thinking, 'God, the show is going to be on the air forever, it's going to win awards,'" Hatosy said. "I was blown away by the show. Then, two weeks later, we get canceled." In a jab to NBC's five-times-a-week primetime airing of 'The Jay Leno Show,' Hatosy said, "And to hear that we are replaced by a non-scripted television show was devastating." He continues, "But TNT picked it up. And now we have a new life. NBC is right -- it is dark, it is gritty, it is real. I can't think of a better place for it to be. TNT can show us the show, and I think the audience is going to respond to it." NBC canceled 'Southland,' an L.A.-set cop drama co-starring Ben McKenzie and Regina King, on Oct. 8. TNT picked it up on Nov. 2, announcing the network would air the already aired episodes again, in addition to the unaired episodes. Asked whether 'Southland' would film more new episodes, Hatosy said, "I hope so. I do, I do. I think the six unaired episodes are very, very strong." 'Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,' costarring Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes and Val Kilmer, hits limited theaters Nov. 20. Quote:

| ^ Great photo of Michael. Looking good. And cool interview with Shawn. I hope his new film does well. Quote:
I think Michael may be front and centre for the early promotion though because I think he's even more of a fan favourite right now than he was before. TNT are probably very impressed at how he rallied and motivated the fanbase through a difficult few weeks. And how accessible and responsive he is to the fans. "This is how it's done in Orange County." For that exchange alone, this episode belongs in the pilot Hall of Fame. The episode also quickly and effectively introduces the strands that will dominate the series: the unlikely friendship between Ryan and rich nerd Seth (Adam Brody), healthy dollops of teen romance, the notion that the parents are just as clueless about love and money as kids and lots of lovingly photographed close-ups of lifestyle envy. First of all, they picked up NBC’s canceled Southland, which they’ll at least finish out. Time will tell if they decide to film new episodes. Remarkably, given the calculatedly low expectations that NBC had publicized, The Jay Leno Show has, on several occasions, managed to fall short of even that painfully modest ratings target. And Zucker’s decision to cancel Southland, a promising cop series from ER czar John Wells that had yet to air a single episode of its second season, came off as such a brazen act of bird-flipping that Wells, a powerful and politic writer-producer who was recently elected to run the Writers Guild of America, West, issued a statement saying he was “disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically acclaimed series that was for so many years a hallmark of their success.” “Drop dead” would have been more concise.
