Southland: Bromstad also told us to expect some "creative adjustments" to the L.A. cop show: "I think they tried to do too much in those six episodes. It's really going to focus on Regina King and Ben McKenzie, the two sets of officers and detectives and sort of focus on crimes and how they come together." More Ben McKenzie is good by us!

Southland
Where We Left Off: Things were winding down quite nicely for Southland's debut season: Regina King's Det. Adams single-handedly saved the life of a young girl targeted by gangbangers, and Michael Cudlitz's Officer Cooper seemed to be in domestic bliss. Then Det. Clarke (Tom Everett Scott) had to go and get shot.

What's Next: Can Clarke survive? And can the show survive a move to Fridays?

August 28, 2009 - "Johnny Got His Gun"

Enjoy the Kansas premier of "Johnny Got His Gun" on Friday, August 28th at 5:00 p.m. at the newly renovated Astro 3 Theatre in Marysville.

Shot "live on stage, on film," Dalton Trumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun" is a cross between Lars Von Trier's "Dogville" and Johnny Demme and Spalding Gray's stage monologue, "Swimming to Cambodia". All of the action takes place on stage in a black box theatre with minimal scenery. Ben McKenzie gives a riveting tour-de-force performance as an American soldier hit by an artillery shell on the last day of World War I. The movie takes place in the mind of 'Joe Bonham', a quadruple amputee who has also lost his eyes, ears, nose and mouth. Regaining consciousness, Joe discovers that while his brain is healthy and able to reason, the rest of his body is irreparably shattered, leaving him trapped forever within the confines of his own imagination. He struggles valiantly to find some way to communicate with the outside world. Tapping his head in Morse code, he breaks through and pleads with his caretakers to be put on display as a living example of the cost of war.

Johnny Got His Gun

In 1982, playwright Bradley Rand Smith adapted the novel for the stage, under the title Dalton Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun, with an acclaimed off-Broadway performance by then newcomer Jeff Daniels (who went on to such film hits as Terms of Endearment, 1983, and Dumb and Dumber, 1994). The stage version was filmed in 2008. The part of Joe Bonham was played by Ben McKenzie, best known for the TV series The O.C. and Southland and the independent film Junebug (2005).
