'Southland' has signs of being a keeper

Southland, the new police drama from ER co-creator John Wells, is just three weeks old, but already it shows signs of being a keeper.
Southland is pulling in almost as many viewers as ER did early earlier this year, during that show's final season, and it now looks like a decent bet for renewal when the fall schedules are unveiled next month.
More importantly, it's a cop show with a difference -- an ensemble drama that owes more to cop shows from TV's past like Adam-12, The Rookies and High Incident than it does modern-day forensic dramas like CSI, Bones and Criminal Minds.
Of those past shows, Southland owes most to The Rookies, a 1970s series based on Joseph Wambaugh's book The New Centurions, about rookie police officers thrown into a milieu of psychedelic drugs, hippie be-ins and race riots. The Rookies depicted the day-in-the-day life of a typical uniformed police officer patrolling the big city suburbs, and it had a realism and an edge that other TV cop shows of the time lacked.
Southland is about a newbie adjusting to a new life on the job. As played by Ben McKenzie, rookie police officer Ben Sherman is a young, naive idealist who led a pampered upbringing in a well-to-do neighbourhood before deciding to become a street cop.
In tonight's episode, we learn a little more about why he decided to ditch the good life for the life of a police officer, and it sets up many of the episodes to come.
Southland is the TV midseason's biggest surprise. It's a new show that, on the face of it, looks like just another TV cop show but, beneath that surface, becomes so much more. Of all the new series that have debuted in recent weeks -- and there have been many -- this is the one that looks as if it will stick. (CTV, NBC, 10 p.m.)

It's definitely a keeper for me. I just hope NBC feel the same.

I posted a Michael/Arija interview in the spoiler thread and Michael seems very positive about the show's future.

  • Behind the Scenes of NBC's Southland --- There's a short clip with Ben and Regina King

KUSA - It's described as the ER of cop shows and the buzz continues to build about NBC's Southland.

On 9NEWS At Noon we talked to stars Regina King and Ben McKenzie who say the realism of the show has attracted a cult following among the real cops the series tries to portray.

The actors say the key to Southland's realism is the amount of time the writers and producers take to get every detail as accurate as possible. The [producer] sits in with detectives and patrol officers to find out how that world works together. How patrol officers and detectives work together and don't work together," actress Regina King explained.

For McKenzie, his preparation included going on a series of ride-alongs.

"I noticed one thing immediately, which is that you're in uniform, in a marked car, and you don't know who anyone else is, but they all know who you are," he said.

"You're the mark. You don't look like them, you don't act like them and you don't dress like them. They might come to you with a problem that needs fixing, or they might create a problem with you. You never know," he explained.

Both actors credit the show's creator Ann Biderman and executive producer John Wells with the show's early buzz, along with its growing numbers of real police officers who've become fans.

"The script is incredibly dense, intricate and beautiful," said McKenzie. "And, Chris and John have been making some of the best television in the last 10 or 20 years, in my opinion."

The show airs on 9NEWS and NBC on Thursdays at 9 p.m. MST.:
