In addition, NBC's popular new comedy "Parks and Recreation" (Thursdays, 8:30-9 p.m. ET) will continue with original episodes through April and May with its finale on May 14; the new hit drama "Southland" concludes its season on Thursday, May 21 (10-11 p.m. ET).

NBC was fourth for the week, averaging 6.31 million viewers. The network's most-watched program was the second episode of its police drama "Southland," which was 25th with 9.61 million viewers and first in its Thursday 10-11 p.m. time slot. "Southland" retained 97 percent of the 9.86 million viewers that watched its premiere.

  • 'Southland' Cursing: Bring on the Bleeps

Why the new Ben McKenzie cop show will be airing bleeped-out foul language, rather than omitting it

'Southland' cursing: Bring on the bleeps | Television News | TV | Entertainment Weekly

Like most cop dramas, NBC's Southland features a predictable parade of characters, from the know-it-all badge-brandishing vets to the wide-eyed rookie. But the show's April 9 premiere did come with a few surprises — eight, to be exact. That's the number of times the execs chose to air foulmouthed characters' bleeped-out lines. And fans of the Ben McKenzie project produced by John Wells (ER) had better get used to the censoring sound effect. ''This is a realistic portrayal of police officers,'' says Mitch Metcalf, the network's chief of scheduling. ''We're not sanitizing it, but we're still making it appropriate for network TV. I think it's the right way to handle it.'' It's not like they have a choice. The Shield — FX's highly acclaimed (and unregulated) series — may have set a new standard for the police genre with its trademark gritty realism, but NBC could face FCC fines if it dares to drop S-bombs like Vic Mackey did. Though Southland airs on the coasts at 10 p.m. (considered an indecency safe harbor on broadcast TV because kids are most likely not in the audience), it's in the highly monitored 9 p.m. slot in the Central time zone. ''We don't want to be excessive about [the swearing],'' says Metcalf. ''But I think it helps to portray the real-life action while still remembering our role as broadcasters.''

  • Ask the Flying Monkey! (April 22, 2009) | AfterElton.com

Q: Groeten (i.e. “Greetings!”): Ever since I started to watch The OC, I was instantly smitten by the hotness that is Benjamin McKenzie. What I was wondering is: what is his stance towards the GLBT community and gay people/fans in general? -- Kevin, Belgium P.S: If you happen to have a super-special Flying Monkey magic spell to have him turn gay and fall madly in love with me, I wouldn't mind!

A: In fact, Benjamin McKenzie already has a gay partner … in his role as a cop on the new NBC show Southland where his cop-partner is a very un-stereotypical gay man.

What does he think of gay folks in real life? Well, the Flying Monkey was a little reluctant to contact Benjamin and ask, “What do you think of gay people?” So instead I researched him.

I couldn’t find any evidence of him speaking out on gay issues one way or the other, but here’s what I discovered: he was raised in Texas (could be bad); he’s the son of a strong anti-war activist, and calls himself an anti-war activist as well (could be good); he played football (could be bad); he is a staunch Democrat and campaigned passionately for Obama (could be good).

I’m aware this is a lame, unsatisfying answer. But I’ll be at an event this summer when I’ll likely see Benjamin face-to-face. I promise I’ll ask a variation of your question then.

In the meantime, I did work the spell you requested, and he’s on his way over to you now. That means I’ll probably meet you both this summer. See you then!

  • The Ten Best Cop Shows Currently on TV

    2. “Southland”: “Southland’s” strength will undoubtedly be the talented Benjamin McKenzie. That his presence is a main reason to tune in continues a trend this spring season in TV, such as with Jeremy Renner on “The Unusuals” and Nathan Fillion on “Castle” stealing their respective shows. The shows aren’t great, but with great actors taking what they can get, we’ll have to do the same as well. Which brings us full circle. “Southland” can only represent reality as it’s deemed acceptable by broadcast networks and advertisers. It’s grittier than, say, “Law & Order,” and will be worth keeping up with for now, but we’ll watch it mainly because it’s on, and it’s one of the better cop shows airing and, well, why not? We hit the peak with “The Wire”; now there’s nowhere to go but down. — Sarah Carlson

The 10 Best Cop Shows | Scathing Reviews for Bitchy People

  • DVR Life: Incoming!

Southland. Episode three airs this week so the blog reviews should start flooding in. I'll just go ahead and say 'stunning'. Great new show that I look forward to weekly. Benjamin McKenzie portrayal of rookie officer Ben Sherman has been flawless and, much like Tim Roth but in a very different manner, he makes his facial expressions do most of the work. At times I have trouble watching an actor from a beloved show (The O.C.) take on a new part with out my mind unconciously melding the two characters together, but McKenzie, through sheer talent alone, managed to break that habit this time. I thought last week's episode was lacking in screen time for him, though.
