Austin actor McKenzie campaigns for Obama

Austin native Ben McKenzie, former star of the TV series “The O.C.” and the movie “Junebug,” is racing around Austin and Georgetown today on behalf of Democratic presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama.

“I met him in L.A. last fall,” McKenzie said, phoning between rallies today. “He came to an event to get young people in Hollywood to campaign for him, and he was quite an impressive individual.”

This is not the actor’s first foray into politics. McKenzie (who grew up here as Ben Schenkkan, son of attorney Pete Schenkkan and Frances Schenkkan) spoke at the 2004 Democratic Convention in Boston — the same gathering where Obama first made a national name for himself. But McKenzie didn’t meet the senator then.

Traveling with actress Kerry Washington (“Ray,” “The Fantastic Four”), McKenzie and Washington hosted a rally Thursday morning at 9:30 at Southwestern University in Georgetown, galloped over to Huston-Tillotson University for another rally at 12:30 p.m. and then will dash to yet another gathering for St. Edward’s University at Opal Divine’s on South Congress Avenue.

The busy day will conclude at the University of Texas with a 5 p.m. rally at Dobie Mall.

On Friday, McKenzie and Washington will continue their sweep of colleges in Central and South Texas, heading to Houston for gatherings at Texas Southern and Rice, swinging up through College Station to A&M and returning to Austin for a quick respite.

On Saturday, the duo hits the road again for San Antonio to visit Trinity and UT-San Antonio.

“This is my first time stumping for Senator Obama,” McKenzie said. “There’s a ton of energy right now behind him. I think he’s got a great shot, especially among young people.”

By the way, McKenzie has a role in a new Al Pacino movie, “88 Minutes,” which was filmed last year and is due in theaters in April.

Thanks for that, Hanna! He is so cute! I love how he does that little dance with Kerry!

I love how the crowd is primarily female. I have a feeling they're there mainly for Ben instead of Obama Not that I blame them

Benjamin and Kerry Heart Obama, Too!
Buzz Foto LLC - Paparazzi Is An Art Form!
Kerry Washington and Benjamin McKenzie were in Texas the other day, showing some love for presidential candidate Barack Obama! The two journeyed to Austin, Texas where they made speeches and held signs at the University of Texas. Kerry Washington looked very poised in her suit with Obama pin. Benjamin opted for a more casual look, but both actors were definitely on fire for the candidate of their choice. These fotos are already going places with big magazines - around election time campaigning celebs generate a lot of interest.

Article on celebrity supporters- Ben mention

Primary Journal | OMG! I voted with a TV star - News

If that's more of what you were looking for, the sidewalk across the street from the Brazos County Courthouse in Bryan was the place to be on Friday night. The voting may have actually been taking place across the street. But on that corner, actors Ben McKenzie and Kerry Washington posed for pictures, lighting the otherwise dark downtown thoroughfare with the flashes of pocket digital cameras, in the name of Sen. Barack Obama.

Was this an opportunity to use their celebrity for political gain? Nah, of course not! "We don't think there's anything special about celebrity," said Washington, who acted in the Academy Award-winning films "The Last King of Scotland" and "Ray," and has campaigned in nine states for Obama.

It is, instead, her acting as an everyday American thinking about the future of her country. She said she's tired of seeing Bushes and Clintons on the ballot for president throughout her life and Obama, to her, is the exciting alternative.

Everyday American, though? Like college students would gather to take pictures and talk about Barack Obama in the dark with John Smith and Suzy Q. Public. "It's a responsibility to use that [celebrity] in a positive manner," replied McKenzie, who starred in "The OC."

The consensus about the role of celebrity endorsements always seems to be the same, no matter who you ask: It doesn't have any weight in my choice, but I could see how it could for some.

I'm really glad that he feels that way abotu using a celebrity status positively. So many celebrities take advantage of that title and do absolitely nothing. So, it's refreshing to hear someone say that. If possible, I love him even more now.

Thanks, Michal.

Celebrities support Dems
Celebrities support Dems - News

The UTSA chapter of Students for Barack Obama hosted a "Get Out the Vote" rally on March 1.

Ben McKenzie, better known as Ryan Atwood in the television series "The OC," and Kerry Washington, who acted opposite Jamie Foxx in the motion picture "Ray," spoke to 138 audience members about the importance of voting and why they support Obama.

Students were out showing support for a few different reasons on Saturday afternoon.

"I am a huge Obama supporter. I went to the town hall meeting and attended the speech he gave at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater this past Friday night," senior elementary education major Monica Rocha said.

"I like Obama because he is more about peace within the world as a whole and wants to change current problems. Also seeing Ben McKenzie was a little bit of an influence as well."

After a short introduction, McKenzie and Washington got the crowd going by doing a quick political chant. "Fire it up, Ready to go," was repeated and echoed throughout the Retama Room as the entire crowd chanted after McKenzie and Washington.
Shortly after the chant, McKenzie, a lifelong Democrat, took the stage and shared some personal life lessons. McKenzie spoke of when, as a junior in college in 2000, he didn't exercise his right to vote and had the mind set that his vote did not matter because he was just one person.

"I have no right to complain about the problems our country is facing now because I didn't vote in the 2000 election and by 2004 it was too late," McKenzie said.

"If we can make a change now, fix the situation now, we are going to save this country so much hardship."

McKenzie then spoke of a very personal experience that forever changed him and added that this is one reason he is pushing for a change within our country.

"I moved to New York City just before Sept, 11, 2001. I remember the days and weeks after 9/11 and being in New York, and seeing foreigners that were visiting that literally got trapped there because they couldn't get a flight out," McKenzie said.

"They would go up to any American on the street and speak of their sympathy to what had happened to our country, but as time has gone by, that has slowly changed."

"I don't know where that is now. It has suddenly been replaced by fear of America, what America stands for, hatred of America, and I feel as if we are going backwards instead of forward," he said.

McKenzie also stressed the importance of voting in the Texas primary and participating in the caucus as well.

Washington, who has been to nine states speaking in support of Barack Obama, feels that the race for the Democratic seat is much bigger than race or gender. She adds that right now more than ever, each and every person's vote does matter.

"It is amazing to think that in the original draft of the U.S. Constitution, that either one of these two candidates would not have been able to vote, and now are the front runners for the Democratic nomination for the next president of the United States," Washington said.

Washington calls herself and McKenzie surrogates for Obama, saying that he is just one person and cannot be everywhere all at once.

"We have visited schools in Austin, Houston, we went to Rice and A&M, and everywhere we go we try to get Obama's message across the best way possible," Washington said.

Washington remembers the time before she had chosen a candidate to endorse and didn't really know who to support.

"I would be at red carpet events and have reporters asking me who I was supporting for president, and, for awhile, I didn't have a concrete answer. I was a very Johnny come-lately, in deciding who I would support," Washington said.

Washington spoke of how difficult it was for her in deciding which candidate was the best person for the job.

"Putting gender and race behind me, I had to ask myself, who I thought was the next best human being to lead this country," Washington said. "I came to realize that Senator Barack Obama is that person!"

Washington then spoke about some of Obama's views on the country's current economic situation concerning tax breaks the importance of our next president's appointing one or two Supreme Court justices.

As the rally ended, Washington and McKenzie both urged students to continue the conversation about voting and getting Obama's message out to fellow students, roommates, friends and family members.

Washington added, "Together we can make a difference, and together we will Barack The Vote!"

Sean Astin spoke on Feb. 26 in the Somrbilla in support of Hillary Clinton.

Thanks Michal! I think it's so cute that Ben is getting out there and expressing his beliefs about something he obviously feels very strongly about.
