They did & I like how they had their own dynamic away from the group too, you could tell that they weren't just friends because of their so's

That's what I like, they cared for each other in their own right. The Core Four wasn't just 2 couples who hung out, they were all friends too

Yeah, I always like in groups where the friendships are given lots of attention too as well as the romances. I kinda think the writers dropped the ball with Seth/Marissa though, they had moments where it seemed like they could be great friends, I mean in 1x02 they were realizing how much they had in common, but then in 3x25 Summer had to tell them to hug.

They could have explored the fact that Seth and Marissa had many things in common a little more, just little references here and there would have been cool.

They did have one moment in season 2 (I forget the episode number) where they were both sitting at the end of the pier having seen Summer and Ryan seemingly move on with new partners at the Bait Shop.

I always thought Summer was telling them to hug because Seth was so awkward in those situations

I think that was partly it, but it was awkward on Marissa's end too, I think it just showed that they weren't really that close anymore

& I love that pier scene, they have another one in that ep too where Seth goes to her room where they talk - but then I think they didn't really get anything in s3....

It's funny though because season 3 was the best season for R/S!

In season 3 Marissa was going off the rails so it we had more interaction between Ryan and Summer because of it and probably bonded them to be closer as friends.

I remember this scene, where Summer clearly wasn't pleased to be telling Ryan where Marissa was

Yeah, it probably was partly because Marissa was isolating herself from the group in s3

Summer looked out for Ryan in s3, she was always trying to make sure that Marissa wasn't neglecting their relationship

I remember in that episode the morning after that scene Summer telling Marissa to call Ryan.

She definitely took on the role of protector of Ryan's feelings in season 3

She did, she was the first one to sense trouble with Johnny & even though she tried to stop it, she clearly knew how all that was going to end

She did but in the end it was inevitable.

She tried to minimise damage though

& it kinda mirrored how Ryan was always telling Seth to treat Summer better too
