Deadline: ‘Gotham’ Gets Full-Season Order At Fox

On the heels of Gotham setting a record for Live+7 lift in adults 18-49, the superhero drama has been given a full-season order by Fox. Gotham already had a larger-than-normal 16-episode original order, so it has now been picked up for six more episodes to bring its total to a full-season 22. (Standard order sizes are 13 for initial order and nine for back order.) Gotham joins another breakout freshman drama, ABC’s How To Get Away with Murder, and fellow ABC newbie, comedy Black-ish, which were awarded full-season pickups last week.

The Dark Knight continues to rise: Fox has ordered an additional six episodes of Batman prequel “Gotham,” bringing its first season’s episode total to 22.

The series, which is exec produced by Bruno Heller, Danny Cannon and John Stephens and stars Ben McKenzie as detective — and eventual Batman friend — James Gordon, has been a solid ratings draw for the network so far this season (the premiere episode also topped piracy downloads).

“‘Gotham’ debuted as one of the most buzzed-about shows of the fall, and with good reason. Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon have created an incredibly rich world, with characters that draw you in and a cast that brings to life these heroes and villains in a way we’ve never seen before,” said Dana Walden and Gary Newman, chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group. “We are so excited to see where Bruno, Danny and the entire ‘Gotham’ team take this story over the course of this season, and so thankful to all the fans who have embraced it this fall.”

“Gotham,” which hails from Warner Bros. TV and is based on the DC Entertainment characters, has already made plans for its sophomore year and has announced that “Masters of Sex” alum Nicholas D’Agosto will appear as Harvey Dent — also known as Batman villain Two-Face — later this season, with the option of the actor becoming a series regular in season two.

Hollywood Reporter: Gotham' Earns a Full Season Order at Fox

Fox is staying put in Gotham. In a move that should come as no surprise, the network's fall breakout has scored a back order for additional six episodes — bringing its freshman season to a full 22 episodes.

Gotham is neck-and-neck with ABC's How to Get Away With Murder as the biggest new series of the fall. With the first round of live-plus-seven day ratings now in for premiere week, Gotham's 6.0 rating among adults 18-49 makes it Monday's highest-rated drama.

To say that Gotham is important to Fox right now would be an understatement. Currently in fourth place for the fall, the network's other launches — Red Band Society, Gracepoint, Mulaney and reality series Utopia — have all failed to draw anywhere near Gotham's ratings. Fox was hot for Gotham since its official series order at the upfronts, making it the centerpiece of its fall marketing. That's working out so far, with the latest episode pulling a 2.5 rating among adults 18-49 in live-plus-same day returns and jumping 60 percent after just three days worth of DVR.

Gotham is the first Fox series to score a full-season order this fall and only the third on all of broadcast TV. ABC handed out speedy orders for How to Get Away With Murder and Black-ish last week.

Produced by Warner Bros. Television, Gotham is based on the characters in DC Comics' Batman.
