So that elevator scene in The Goldberg Variation had me thinking. Scully was all “you can change your clothes and we’ll reach Washington before sunset.” Except she was all up in his personal space with a lilt in her voice as she said it.

I think it's also because she doesn't want to believe that he truly loves her. In En Ami, the CSM even told her that she won't let herself love Mulder.

I can't fathom why that is! Mulder has shown her consistently that she's his top priority. He would never intentionally hurt or disappoint her.

Oh, there's no doubt about that. She came from a military home but Melissa wasn't like that. I think Scully is just way too hard on herself. We got a glimpse at her love life in All Things so that provided some backstory on how she approached personal relationships. I can see why she's single. It's always so satisfying to see her let go and enjoy her time with Mulder. Like that last scene in Hollywood A.D. when she invites him to hang out and they leave holding hands.
