I think season two was the season where the show really started to test the waters in relation to how many different directions they could take the show.
My favourite episodes of the season would have to be the Duane Barry, Ascension, One Breath three parter. Other episodes that really stand out are "Irresistible" - Donnie Pfaster is nightmare worthy, the End Game/ Colony double with Scully on the phone with Mulder and then opening the door to Mulder, The Host and Darin Morgans first episode Humbug. __________________

Another episode that gets overlooked that I really enjoyed was The Calusari That boy is really creepy, actually the whole episode is creepy. __________________

The Host is my favorite 'monster' episode. The design of Flukie was perfect.
I agree that this season felt like the show found itself. The Scully abduction is where the series really took off. I can't imagine the show not having had that storyline. __________________

Can you guys imagine how the whole show would be totally different if Gillian hadn't gotten pregnant this season and they had to come up with some way to explain her absence? It's mind-boggling. Until her disappearance it was more monster/freak-of-the-week episodes with a little bit of conspiracy theory thrown in. After the disappearance, the show started to revolve alot more around the conspiracy theory. Without GA's pregnancy, there would have been no abduction, no Krychek to take her place, no metal thing in her neck so no cancer when it was removed, no Scully-infertitlity because her eggs were all taken, no Emily, no Scully asking Mulder to be her sperm donor, and so on. The show would ahve probably been completely different. They had to explain Scully's absence and ended up really building the whole theory of the show around it

I've heard Chris Carter say the same thing. David too. Poor Gillian thought she was going to get fired (because it was only halfway through the first season when she found out) and she ended up shaping the entire series instead I read a fanfic once where they wrote in Gillian's pregnancy as a one night stand between Scully and Mulder. It was really intriguing.
TNT has just finished showing the second season and it was really fabulous to rewatch (or watch for the first time in some cases) these classic episodes. One of my favorite mytharcs is the season two finale, Anaszi and into the season three premieres. When you think of the amount of canon that they crammed into those three episodes, it just boggles the mind! |

The second half of the season is the better half- I love Humbug, Soft Light, Our Town and Die Hand. I do enjoy the Scully abduction eps, but I don't enjoy watching em over and over again. The funny stand alone eps are best for that.

Wow, I normally lean more towards season three and up, but never realized how many episodes I really liked from the second season.
Little Green Men and The Host are probably the most watched episodes I own. I loved Excelsis Dei - especially the old guy in the tub! - and Aubrey still scares the crap out of me when I watch it. Plus, Humbug, Soft Light, Own Town, Anasazi are all awesome. __________________

I haven't watched Aubrey in such a long time. I might re-watch it and let you know what I think

The old guy's eyes were freaky. And I loved Mulder and Scully's interaction during this episode, discussing Scully's feminine intuition.
