David/Gillian Appreciation Thread #13: because they still have the sweetest friendship between them!

Because they've gone beyond chemistry into history [comment to add]  ▍Gillian: I think we probably know each other better than we know our spouses at any time that we might have had spouses. There might even be more than an attraction, but it's not going to happen. But, you know, you know... Anyway... ▍We heard that Gillian slammed you up against a wall and planted one on you. Am I supposed to be playing along with something I don’t know? David: No, I swear to god. Rob Bowman just told us that. Rob’s just being cute. So, it didn’t happen? David: No. Swear to god? David: Yeah. No, we did a little funny take where I kind of jacked her up against the wall and started, you know, doing the old…. Help me out. Tongues? David: No, we were acting like it was gross carnal coupling. You know, it was a joke for the crew and for us. The actual kissing, that was never a part of the movie, so we never would have shot that. No, the only time we did that was as a joke. Gillian and I did it to our liking, and then I said, “Let’s do one where we’re up against the wall here.” We were outside of the cameras’ view, actually, at that point. So that’s not even on film, I don’t think. [TNT Roughcut, 1998] ▍[Three-Minute X-Files Reunion With David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson] We knew we’d get to see Agent Mulder in the flesh on Monday when we attended former X-Files star David Duchovny’s theatrical debut in the Off Broadway production of Neil LaBute’s The Break of Noon, about a man who survives an office shooting and finds God. But what we didn’t expect was to see Agent Scully (a.k.a. Gillian Anderson) by his side in the intensely crowded opening-night after-party. We grabbed them for a hot three minutes in between their mingling with old friends Ben Stiller, Garry Shandling, and Duchovny’s wife, Téa Leoni. How often do you see each other? Duchovny: Not often. Twice a year? Anderson: Yes, twice a year. Duchovny: Depending on whether we’re doing an X-Files movie or not. If we’re doing an X-Files movie, we see a lot of each other. Anderson: In France, apparently, there is going to be one in France. With you guys? Duchovny: No, no. Not at all. Apparently the script’s written. Anderson: We’re not in it at all. Duchovny: But we always would love to do another one. So we’ll see. We’re getting a little long in the tooth, but we’ll do it. Just me. Not her. Long in the tooth, I mean. Would you do your same roles or become FBI mentors? Duchovny: Well, I wouldn’t be doing her part. Anderson: I’ll be on crutches. He’ll be in a wheelchair. But, yeah, it would be fun. Duchovny: I would do it forever. I will always come back. By the end of the run, we were all good. Do you keep in touch over e-mail? Duchovny: A little bit, yeah. Anderson: A little bit of texting, a little bit of BlackBerry action. Duchovny: I don’t know if you know this, but Gillian’s an accomplished stage actor. She came all the way from London just to see this. I’m very touched by that. What are you doing in London? Anderson: I live there. I’m shooting Johnny English 2, but I live there. And you just couldn’t miss David’s opening night? Anderson: I was told that he finally got to levitate. I had to see it with my own eyes. Didn’t you levitate in The X-Files? Duchovny: Oh sure, I did. Anderson: Oh sure, yeah. Duchovny: That’s why they hired me in this play. That’s something I can do. Anderson: Typecast again, man! This was a more realistic levitation? Duchovny: Real enough. Did you get hurt at all in the scene with Amanda Peet where she’s beating on you? Duchovny: Sometimes she gets my ear but mostly she just gets my cheek. There’s a scene with a prostitute. Did Californication help with your prep for the blow-job scene? Duchovny: There are prostitutes other places other than on Californication. It’s not the only show that has sex on it. Your wife, Téa [Leoni], said you use your iPad as your scene partner … Duchovny: I do. It’s amazing. Anderson: Your iPad? Duchovny: This is going to be an advertisement. There’s this thing called iRehearsal. Yeah? Duchovny: You get your script on the iPad and you can record your lines or the other person’s lines and the script will scroll. Anderson: No! And speak the other person’s lines at you? Duchovny: Yeah, you record their lines. So you can rehearse all by yourself with the lines, and just talk to yourself. It’s great. Last thing. Have you started to pray more now that you’re doing this play? Duchovny: Not really. I pray enough in the show. ▍David: I don’t know why. Maybe just luck in the beginning. But after this long we actually do have a history… And so when I look over at Gillian, or I’m Mulder looking over at Scully, there’s a lot of **** that I can call on. We have a lot between us, and so you don’t really have to make it up. I think that just as people, now fifteen years later, we have just shared so much — regardless of how much we speak to one another. I expect to see Gillian, even if I haven’t seen her for a year. [DD, July 2008.] ▍Gillian: They either want to think we’re madly in love or hating each other. But it’s neither of those things. It’s magical and difficult, and wondrous and painful, and frustrating and joyous, as any intense, intimate relationship is. ▍One word to describe your 20-years journey together? David: Amazing. ▍Gillian: I found that it’s something completely beyond our control. That two people either have it or they don’t. It’s not something that you can force. And, you know, there can be days when we both, you know, don’t wanna talk to each other, and we get on camera and the chemistry is there. David: Yeah, you know, and days when we don’t wanna talk, but unfortunately Mulder and Scully do have to talk. But yeah, it’s just very weird… What have I done so that she doesn't wanna talk to me? Gillian: … Next question. [Golden Globe Awards, 1997] ▍Kim Manners (XF Director): When you direct them in a scene like that last scene in the motel room and basically - they’re fugitives from justice. And you can just see it in their faces: how much they truly did love each other. And that wasn’t just Dana and Fox, that was David and Gillian. They truly, truly loved each other. I never saw anything like it. I’ve been in this business all my life, literally, and I think that David and Gillian’s relationship, and Scully and Mulder, is one of the greatest male/female relationships in TV history. ▍Are they things you wonder about each other that you’ve never dared speak about? Gillian: Yes, it’s happened to me. David: More often than you can imagine! Okay, I’ll start! Gillian, if I irritate you as much as you make out, how have you managed to put up with me all these years? Gillian: I’m a professional and I’ve learnt to ignore the more unpleasant aspects of this job. You know, when I started out, I had to put up with worse than you. Don’t kid yourself… you’re not as important as all that, my little David! My turn! Why did you never tell me about your relationship with Téa Leoni? I wasn’t even invited to the wedding… David: You’re still angry about that? You know, thanks to acting on the X-Files for so long, keeping secrets has become second nature to me. Gillian: Okay, you can tell me now… Between Téa and you, was it love at first sight? David: When I first met her for the first time, she didn’t as much effect on me as that. It was “delayed” love at first sight. Be honest, there must be a couple of things you like about me? Gillian: You’re a sincere and funny guy. Two qualities that are rarely found together in the same man. [Téléstar Interview (October, 1998)] ▍Have you experienced this kind of chemistry in any other films/projects you’ve worked on? Gillian: It’s different. There are shades of it in other projects and films, but there’s just something different with David. That’s the unexplainable bit that I can’t quite put a finger on, and it’s kind of like it was a gift for us to have this experience together. I think they would like to work together again, I remember Gillian in the past saying that she would like to make an appearance on David’s show. It’s probably tricky to work out though when Gillian does most of her work in the U.K. now

Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll work something out
I'm just glad their arguing went away after the 90's as I just found out two leads from my favorite show didnt get along at all  __________________

Yeah, but I understand all that. They were young, they had to work together long hours without a break from each other and they were both “Leo”’s.
 Their personal habits or behaviours probably got on each other’s nerves cause they knew each other too well and couldn’t get breaks. Now, they’ve both said it was cause of that, and now, with more maturity and distance, they know they are good friends  __________________

I think doing the movie over the summer as well was probably too much, the articles on them secretly disliking one another seemed to first come out at around that time
It was funny during the promotion of the revival series to hear them both openly acknowledge that they didn’t always use to get on during the original series, it was something that was so whispered about and speculated over at the time But I mean they must have still get on at different times as well, as Kim Manners talked in a commentary about how close they were during the filming of I think it was either the season 8 finale or the season 9 finale when they stood holding one another silently for about five minutes after the final scene cut, and they’ve talked at conventions about things like how they made the effort to be supportive and give it their all when the other was directing, so it sounds like there was always love there even when they might gave been getting on one another’s nerves at times __________________

I can totally see why not only filming 24 episodes but also a movie on the side, would feel like overkill quality time together! David and Gillian seem like they developed a sibling type relationship where you deep down care and love them but can easily bicker with each other too cause of being safely familiar with each other! __________________

I remember Gillian saying on a talk show that she thought it annoyed David how long it took to fix her hair in the humidity, and David said that she was making him sound like an ass

That would be David who would write one cause Gillian keeps saying she has a lousy memory so I’m not expecting an autobiography from her in the near future
