Random Episode Discussion - Arcadia

Arcadia
Season 6, Episode 15
First Aired: Sunday March 7, 1999

Ok so it's not as controversial as Home but I thought we could do with something a bit lighter after the darkness of Home.

The episode does however still cause a bit of a split between fans. Some see it as a very funny episode with some great shipper moments while others see it as a really dumb and cheesy episode which plays out more like a fanfic written by a really big shipper

I would have to say I am more in the first group. I think it is quite a funny episode with some great little M + S moments. I wouldn't say it's quite up there in the the same class as Bad Blood, Jose Chung..., Small Potatoes etc when it comes to the really great comedy episodes. The story was a bit weak but it is very enjoyable nonetheless with some really good laughs

And of course Mulder and Scully are married!!! Who couldn't love that?

Some favourite moments -

Scully - (to Mulder) "Third warning...toilet seat."

Win Schroeder: How was your first night? Peaceful?
Mulder: Oh, it was wonderful. We just spooned up and fell asleep like little baby cats. Isn't that right, Honeybunch?
Scully: That's right, Poopyhead

There are a few others but I'm going to try and watch the episode soon so I remember them correctly. I'll also post some pictures from the episode later

I agree its not in the same league as the other comedy eps, but it was cute. Actually if it were not for the cute shipper scenes the ep would have totally sucked cos the story and the monster very weak.

I loved to see Mulder and Scully a bit relaxed in this episode. Esp Mulder he seemed to be enjoying a lot more than scully.

Favourite quote:

Win Shroeder: "So... Where'd you two meet?"
Mulder: "Actually, it was at a UFO conference."
Win Shroeder: "Flying saucers? Interesting. Wouldn't have thought you folks would have been into that."
Mulder: "Well, it's not me so much as Laura. She's quite the New-Ager. I mean, she's into those magnetic bracelets and crystals and mood rings, what have you. I mean, God bless her, she's a sucker for all that stuff."

this is so very Mulder.

I have some pics saved when I posted them in the season 6 appreciation thread , will put them in the next post. While going thru the pics I noticed lot of the pics from the episode would be great on the Crazy Captions thread. Esp Scully's facial expressions.

I liked Arcadia at first and it's still one of my favorite episodes, though it's grown less shippy for me over many viewings.

It was very fanfic-y in concept, but the reality just didn't suit how I thought they would act in that situation. I didn't understand how or why Scully acted the way that she did with some of Mulder's antics. He invades her space and touches her from day one and yet here, she's shurgging off his arm and wearing green face masks. I've seen a ton of fanfic explanations, but I'm just not sure any of them are really right.

The "casefile" part of it was laughable and stupid. I remember when it was being filmed that there were a LOT of problems shooting and they had to move out without it being really finished or rewritten properly, which is why it turned out the way it did.

Ah. Thanks for the background info, Jenn. I had no idea about there being problems during shooting.

But I agree with the rest of you. I don't think it qualifies as a good episodes, nevertheless, I love to go back and watch it again and yes, for the exact same reason that I read fanfic.

About Mulder and Scully being in character or not. I totally buy Mulder's behaviour. About Scully I'm not sure. Yes, it was kind of weird of her to shrug him off. I would believe that she was maybe a little uncomfortable with that much "fake" intimacy. I think it can be irritating if someone gets as close as you would like him to for the wrong reasons - if that makes any sense.

So, it's a fun eppy to relax together with Mulder and Scully and watch them smile and touch a little .

I love this episode but I guess I wouldn't if I weren't a shipper I think the garbage monster idea whatsoever was quite dump. But I didn't really care as I only watched it for the shipper scenes, I have to admit
Holli, I get your point about Mulder's behavior and Scully's reaction! I also think she felt uncomfortable because she was irritated. But I don't think his behavior was all fake, I think he just saw an opportunity to get closer to her without having to justify anything and that was sweet

I agree Eilleen. I also don't think that Mulders behaviour was really fake, just that Scully had to assume it was to some degree. Which of course would then be kind of annoying.

some quotes out of the epi

SCULLY: You ready?
MULDER: Let's get it on, honey.
SCULLY: (smiles) All right, then.

(MULDER comes very close into the video frame.)
MULDER: (seductively) You want to make that honeymoon video now?

MULDER: (eating) You've got to love those dolphins ...
although they're pretty tasty, too.
(After a beat of shocked silence, SCULLY laughs nervously.)

MULDER: (putting his arm around SCULLY) Well, it's not me so
much as Laura. She's quite the New-Ager. I mean, she's into those
magnetic bracelets and crystals and mood rings, what have you.
[CarriK sees SCULLY, still smiling, subtly kick MULDER under the table.]
I mean, God bless her she's a sucker for all that stuff.

I love the whole episode. Scully and Mulder in Suburbia.... I would have liked to see them undercover in Wisteria Lane
