Gillovny Appreciation #25: Gillian and David are both in London so naturally we expect a reunion. đ
Welcome to the 25th David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson A p p r e c i a t i o n T h r e a d â â â
[comment to be added] ⢠Because these two have chemistry ⢠cause werewolf and angel = match made in heaven ⢠B'cos they've been having an affair for 15 years ⢠"I'd do it for free, babe" - Gillian ⢠"You can see how truly they did love each other - Kim Manners ⢠Everything Is Conveyed Through Communication Beyond Words! ⢠We would love to see them working together again ⢠One word to describe your 20-years journey together? - "Amazing." DD ⢠Because their chemistry is powerful enough to rearrange the atoms on-screen ⢠We shot in Vancouver. It's very 'moist' in Vancouver. It's very - it's very 'moist' in the anteroom. Because they've gone beyond chemistry into history [comment to add] âGillian: I think we probably know each other better than we know our spouses at any time that we might have had spouses. There might even be more than an attraction, but it's not going to happen. But, you know, you know... Anyway... âWe heard that Gillian slammed you up against a wall and planted one on you. Am I supposed to be playing along with something I donât know? David: No, I swear to god. Rob Bowman just told us that. Robâs just being cute. So, it didnât happen? David: No. Swear to god? David: Yeah. No, we did a little funny take where I kind of jacked her up against the wall and started, you know, doing the oldâŚ. Help me out. Tongues? David: No, we were acting like it was gross carnal coupling. You know, it was a joke for the crew and for us. The actual kissing, that was never a part of the movie, so we never would have shot that. No, the only time we did that was as a joke. Gillian and I did it to our liking, and then I said, âLetâs do one where weâre up against the wall here.â We were outside of the camerasâ view, actually, at that point. So thatâs not even on film, I donât think. [TNT Roughcut, 1998] â[Three-Minute X-Files Reunion With David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson] We knew weâd get to see Agent Mulder in the flesh on Monday when we attended former X-Files star David Duchovnyâs theatrical debut in the Off Broadway production of Neil LaButeâs The Break of Noon, about a man who survives an office shooting and finds God. But what we didnât expect was to see Agent Scully (a.k.a. Gillian Anderson) by his side in the intensely crowded opening-night after-party. We grabbed them for a hot three minutes in between their mingling with old friends Ben Stiller, Garry Shandling, and Duchovnyâs wife, TĂŠa Leoni. How often do you see each other? Duchovny: Not often. Twice a year? Anderson: Yes, twice a year. Duchovny: Depending on whether weâre doing an X-Files movie or not. If weâre doing an X-Files movie, we see a lot of each other. Anderson: In France, apparently, there is going to be one in France. With you guys? Duchovny: No, no. Not at all. Apparently the scriptâs written. Anderson: Weâre not in it at all. Duchovny: But we always would love to do another one. So weâll see. Weâre getting a little long in the tooth, but weâll do it. Just me. Not her. Long in the tooth, I mean. Would you do your same roles or become FBI mentors? Duchovny: Well, I wouldnât be doing her part. Anderson: Iâll be on crutches. Heâll be in a wheelchair. But, yeah, it would be fun. Duchovny: I would do it forever. I will always come back. By the end of the run, we were all good. Do you keep in touch over e-mail? Duchovny: A little bit, yeah. Anderson: A little bit of texting, a little bit of BlackBerry action. Duchovny: I donât know if you know this, but Gillianâs an accomplished stage actor. She came all the way from London just to see this. Iâm very touched by that. What are you doing in London? Anderson: I live there. Iâm shooting Johnny English 2, but I live there. And you just couldnât miss Davidâs opening night? Anderson: I was told that he finally got to levitate. I had to see it with my own eyes. Didnât you levitate in The X-Files? Duchovny: Oh sure, I did. Anderson: Oh sure, yeah. Duchovny: Thatâs why they hired me in this play. Thatâs something I can do. Anderson: Typecast again, man! This was a more realistic levitation? Duchovny: Real enough. Did you get hurt at all in the scene with Amanda Peet where sheâs beating on you? Duchovny: Sometimes she gets my ear but mostly she just gets my cheek. Thereâs a scene with a prostitute. Did Californication help with your prep for the blow-job scene? Duchovny: There are prostitutes other places other than on Californication. Itâs not the only show that has sex on it. Your wife, TĂŠa [Leoni], said you use your iPad as your scene partner ⌠Duchovny: I do. Itâs amazing. Anderson: Your iPad? Duchovny: This is going to be an advertisement. Thereâs this thing called iRehearsal. Yeah? Duchovny: You get your script on the iPad and you can record your lines or the other personâs lines and the script will scroll. Anderson: No! And speak the other personâs lines at you? Duchovny: Yeah, you record their lines. So you can rehearse all by yourself with the lines, and just talk to yourself. Itâs great. Last thing. Have you started to pray more now that youâre doing this play? Duchovny: Not really. I pray enough in the show. âDavid: I donât know why. Maybe just luck in the beginning. But after this long we actually do have a history⌠And so when I look over at Gillian, or Iâm Mulder looking over at Scully, thereâs a lot of **** that I can call on. We have a lot between us, and so you donât really have to make it up. I think that just as people, now fifteen years later, we have just shared so much â regardless of how much we speak to one another. I expect to see Gillian, even if I havenât seen her for a year. [DD, July 2008.] âGillian: They either want to think weâre madly in love or hating each other. But itâs neither of those things. Itâs magical and difficult, and wondrous and painful, and frustrating and joyous, as any intense, intimate relationship is. âOne word to describe your 20-years journey together? David: Amazing. âGillian: I found that itâs something completely beyond our control. That two people either have it or they donât. Itâs not something that you can force. And, you know, there can be days when we both, you know, donât wanna talk to each other, and we get on camera and the chemistry is there. David: Yeah, you know, and days when we donât wanna talk, but unfortunately Mulder and Scully do have to talk. But yeah, itâs just very weird⌠What have I done so that she doesn't wanna talk to me? Gillian: ⌠Next question. [Golden Globe Awards, 1997] âKim Manners (XF Director): When you direct them in a scene like that last scene in the motel room and basically - theyâre fugitives from justice. And you can just see it in their faces: how much they truly did love each other. And that wasnât just Dana and Fox, that was David and Gillian. They truly, truly loved each other. I never saw anything like it. Iâve been in this business all my life, literally, and I think that David and Gillianâs relationship, and Scully and Mulder, is one of the greatest male/female relationships in TV history. âAre they things you wonder about each other that youâve never dared speak about? Gillian: Yes, itâs happened to me. David: More often than you can imagine! Okay, Iâll start! Gillian, if I irritate you as much as you make out, how have you managed to put up with me all these years? Gillian: Iâm a professional and Iâve learnt to ignore the more unpleasant aspects of this job. You know, when I started out, I had to put up with worse than you. Donât kid yourself⌠youâre not as important as all that, my little David! My turn! Why did you never tell me about your relationship with TĂŠa Leoni? I wasnât even invited to the wedding⌠David: Youâre still angry about that? You know, thanks to acting on the X-Files for so long, keeping secrets has become second nature to me. Gillian: Okay, you can tell me now⌠Between TĂŠa and you, was it love at first sight? David: When I first met her for the first time, she didnât as much effect on me as that. It was âdelayedâ love at first sight. Be honest, there must be a couple of things you like about me? Gillian: Youâre a sincere and funny guy. Two qualities that are rarely found together in the same man. [TĂŠlĂŠstar Interview (October, 1998)] âHave you experienced this kind of chemistry in any other films/projects youâve worked on? Gillian: Itâs different. There are shades of it in other projects and films, but thereâs just something different with David. Thatâs the unexplainable bit that I canât quite put a finger on, and itâs kind of like it was a gift for us to have this experience together. But itâs not necessarily quantifiable.â [GA, Buzzline, 2008] â"Itâs going to be strange and fun. Thankfully, Gillian will be there, and weâll both be in positions of like, âAre we really here doing this again? Are we really saying those words again?â At least weâll have each other." David Duchovny - People Magazine May 2015 ââIâm just thankful that Gillian will be there [when we film more X-Files] to check in with and go âFâk, this is strange!â, he says with a laugh. âWe started this show 23 years ago, and here we are still doing it. In some way, itâs a show that never ended.â David Duchovny, TV Guide Magazine, May 2015 ââWe have a long-standing, deep appreciation and friendship for each other because there is nobody else on the planet that really understands exactly what we went through. If you have that, you donât really have to act. You just stand on your mark and look at the other person and allow it to be.â David Duchovny in SFX Magazine, March 2016 ââOur relationship has definitely become a proper friendship over the last few years. I think weâre more on each otherâs side. Weâre more aware of the otherâs needs, wants, concerns, and mindful to take those into considerationâ and just sharing more about our experiences in the moment, under the sudden realization that weâre both in this together. She's gotta make sure he looks good! That's such a wife thing to do and you can tell she does it subconsciously.

Yep, Iâm sure she just reaches out to groom him without even thinking about how it looks to onlookers. Same when David offered her his jacket at a convention, you could tell that he wasnât expecting all of the awing from the crowd

He was just taking care of her and making sure she wasn't cold.
His hand on her lower back. |
