I'm not sure if there's a particular moment; for me, it was more like the essence of who he was as a character.

I can't think of a specific moment either, I do know the moments that pop up most in my head are always him walking on screen and just before he speaks or even makes a point takes a puff of his cigarette.

I just rematched the S5 finale, and I think my favorite moment is when he sets fire to the X-Files.

I'm looking forward to seeing him tonight.

I think it's neither love nor admiration, at least not in the authentic kind of way. It sounds crazy and also a bit macabre but I think he indeed feels fatherly pride. He has much more respect for Mulder than he had for Spender. The reason is quite simple. While Spender was a devot puppy of his father first he betrayed him later on. For CSM this represents weakness and this man hates nothing more than weakness. This is one reason why he wants to separate the "worthy" people from the "unworthy" ones . Mulder never showed a weakness, instead he is headstrong, brave and has the will to defend his believes. In his mad mind the CSM sees something of himself in his son and that makes him proud. Although his perception is totally irrealistic, for CSM has much more evil characteristics than Mulder has, he sees in him a worthy heir.

Yeah I agree, I think that he respects Mulder more than feels actual love for him

He can't love his son for he isn't able to feel love, unselfishly love. If he loves his son purely, in an unselfish way, he would rather die than letting him fade away. There are two main reasons why he wants Mulder to live. 1. He needs a heir and Mulder repesents the right choice because of the reasons I already explained. 2. CSM hates to loose. Although he respects his son for his strong will, he needs the possibility of a challenge. He needs the challenge to keep the illusion alive to break his will someday and to dominate him.

I’m kind of leaning towards a control/ dominance/ power/ conquer type of thing when it comes to why CSM would want Mulder on his team/ side. But since this is TV, not everything is so black and white, either.

I can see everyone's view on this. Me I lean more towards the admiration - but in a sadistic sorta way, like out of everyone, I truly believe that Mulder is whom CSM would want to continue his legacy, but the fact is Mulder wont.

No Mulder definately won't. Not with a free will. But maybe CSM still believes that he can force him. He tried with this cure, so why not try again with other arguments. As he said, every man has his weakness...
