Actor/Character Appreciation - Peter Boyle/ Clyde Bruckman

To go along with the appreciation threads for David, Gillian, Nicholas Lea etc I thought we’d have this general appreciation thread for actors who made a great impact in the X-Files world but where not around long enough to merit a thread on their own.

Can give each actor/character a week or two and then switch to someone new.

And to kick off this new thread I’ve chosen Doug Hutchison (Eugene Victor Tooms)

He gave us one of the creepiest portrayals of a character that I think most of us have ever seen in the episodes “Squeeze” and “Tooms”, and this thread is for discussing the character of Tooms, Hutchison’s acting on the X-Files and Doug Hutchison in general

Doug Hutchison trivia

Doug was front man for a B-52s-esque band called the Yuh-uh-uh-uhs. The group performed at clubs and coffeehouses in and around Hollywood, cut a homegrown album entitled "YUH!", and made a music video of their cult-hit single, "Vampire Chickens".

What he likes to do in his spare time is: Write, Read, Watch movies, Take walks through Central Park, Eat out at good restaurants and Hang out with friends

Is a fan of Stanley Kubrick films and lists "A Clockwork Orange" as his favourite

He has a production company called Dark Water Productions

Doug Hutchison filmography

The Chocolate War(1988)
Fresh Horses (1988)
The Lawnmower Man (1992)
A Time to Kill (1996)
Con Air (1997)
Batman & Robin (1997)
The Green Mile (1999)
Bait (2000)
I Am Sam (2001)
The Salton Sea (2002)
Guiding Light (2004-2005)
The Burrowers (2008)
Punisher: War Zone (2008)

He is hoping to make his directing debut in the near future with “The Damned.” Based on a story he wrote he describes it as The Lost Boys meets Trainspotting

He is currently producing a webisodic series called Vampire Killers which can be watched here

VAMPIRE KILLERS

And speaking of websites here is his official site

WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF DOUG HUTCHISON!

Fantastic actor! I love his portrayal of Tooms and his sort of cool exterior. I love the way he talked and basically everything about him. And I loved him in The Green Mile.

His portrayal of Tooms really was excellent, one of the best performances by a guest star over the whole series - only really matched by Brad Dourif, Peter Boyle and one or two others

I didn't think I'd seen him in anything else but just looking at his list of films and I have seen both Con Air and Batman & Robin but don't remember him from either. Will need to check them out

Great idea for a thread , I love Squeeze and Tooms and the creepiness of EVT is definitely a big part of why I love the eps.

I love that movie, his character is one of my favorite love to hate villains ever. I swear when he steps on that poor little mouse .

^ Oh, I know! I cringed at that part. I can't stand watching it.

He's such an amazing actor, and I love the way he talks. There's just something about him.

Great idea for a thread John!

I loved Doug Hutchison as Tooms, I can't imagine anyone else in the role. He looks so cute and innocent but with a crazy look in his eye, a frightening combination I think.

I watched I Am Sam not long ago and I couldn't get the image of him eating news paper and grinning like a mad man!

Oh the irony! I was JUST watching Squeeze not but an hour ago and mentioning to my friend what a great actor I thought Doug Hutchison was. There's something about his facial features that just really made the part, even with out those yellow contact lenses. I love how he could just creep you out with no words at all... Oh and that smirk in the final scene of Squeeze as he's looking at the slot where the food comes in through the door. Well, it sent shivers down my spine I can tell you that.

Well it took a while but the thread seems to have caught fire!

One of the creepiest moments for me is when he is in the interrogation room undergoing the lie-detector test. There is just something very eerie about the scene, the way he stares blankly and the way he answers the questions.

^ That and the scene where he's in the prison cell and looks at the hole in the door and smiles, it's so creepy!

I didn't know he was in the Green Mile though, will definitely need to check that out.

Oh yeah where he's licking the strips of newspaper. Very creepy!

Just been looking around and Doug Hutchison has certainly had some interesting looks in his time

I never spotted him in Lost! That last picture... wow, that is possibly even more creepy than Tooms!

Was just thinking about his performance and I'm struggling to think of many other people on any show or in any film that have made such an impression while using so few words.

He hardly says anything in his two episodes and yet his performance and the character are just so memorable
