Good Start...

I apologize in advance for this lengthy post.

Wow...who knew that stepping away from the forums for a few days could renew my enthusiasm.

First thing first... to TPTB for casting Elizabeth Mitchell. Not only did she step into her role with conviction--immediately adding nuances to the character that make her both likeable, yet uncertain of her motives, interests and perhaps her reluctance with the "Others" agenda. She also managed to pull off the near impossible by making Jack bearable again.

That and she knocked his *ss out cold with one punch. Kept waiting for Sarah to do it, but I'll take what I can get. My brother just shook his head with a wry smile after that scene ended and said, "Man, he has got to feel like a true punk to get knocked out not only with one punch, but by a female. Pitiful." I love my brother.

I did notice that the writers didn't rely on Jack's flashback too heavily. They were tying up a loose end with the demise of Jack's marriage, while expounding on Jack's tendency to lose focus when he becomes obsessed. He literally turned into a stalker. Not sure why he didn't just hire a private investigator if he was that determined to find out who Sarah left him for...maybe it was his pride.

I will admit that I felt a both sorry and repulsed by the comment Jack made to his father about not measuring up. The look that flashed across Christian's face was one of sorrow and sympathy for his son. After all those years, Jack still didn't get it the essence of that conversation...and he was to blame for that. I would imagine just hearing those words thrown back at him had more to do with his falling off the wagon than Jack beating him up. What a sad predicament for both men.

Not sure what to make of Sarah walking away with that mysterious smile upon her face. There didn't seem to be any humor or malice in it, however. If the parallell is to be made with how Juliet dealt with Jack, patience, care and concern...then to see him break down, offering Sarah anything to simply tell him who this other man...then it was both heartbreaking and confirming of her reasons for leaving Jack in the first place. He didn't want to know who this other man was to make things better with Sarah, or even to understand why she left...he just wanted to have someone else to blame for whatever his shortcomings were as a husband.

Did anyone get the sense that Juliet may not be in the "Others" camp of her own volition? Her exchange with Benry was anything but friendly, which I hope the writers have a good idea in mind in the telling of that story.

There were a several schools of thought that may have been at work in regards to the symbolisms running throughout this episode. Here's some of my thoughts.

There was no coincidence the "Others" chose the settings in which to put Sawyer, Kate and Jack. At first glance, Sawyer's psychological cage gave the impression not much thought went into it at all. It was a barbaric, animalistic setting one he would likely feel somewhat comfortable in given the tendencies of his nature. But it was anything but. I would dare say the "Others" have a wait and see if he gives them more agenda in regards to Sawyer.

Jack...actually, I found Jack's "cage" the most intriguing and diabolical. He's incased a aquarium or sorts which is in cased in water. An element that consumes, envelopes and submerges an individual. Jack's demeanor in his flashback and present mindset suggests in his effort to control his environment, he nearly drowned in his obsession with knowing whose Sarah's new lover was. The parallell came in his near literal drowning when he opened the hatch door, against Juliet and Benry's warning not to (Christian, Sarah warnings reiterated: "Let it go, Jack.")

Kate...ah, Kate. Now wasn't she just pretty as a picture in her ta-ta emphasizing sundress?

Kate had no real "cage" except the drappings in her mind and heart. They cleaned her up, dressed her up and set before (literally) a table of civilized, sophistication and freedom. A fine breakfast, a beautiful view. It was perfect except for one thing..."I'm going to have to ask you to put them on." says Benry...letting her know...she's not really free at all. Any dignity she may have felt was stripped. She was reminded once again of exactly what she is...a criminal deserving of being inprisoned. However, there was a suggestion in Benry's comment about the next two weeks being difficult for her...Kate has a choice, and I'm sure we won't find out what was proposed to her until a later episode, but it all stemmed from her "slip" of the tongue if you will, in asking about Sawyer's plight first.

Creepy as he is...you have to love Benry and Micheal Emerson's portrayal of that character. Great addition to the cast as well.

All in all...good episode.

I loved this episode. The beginning made me gasp about 5 times. First I saw Henry/Ben, and then all of a sudden the plane splits in half over them and then you realize they're actually LIVING on the island. Creepy much?

Jack's storyline was pretty interesting. Maybe the potential relationship with Juliet will help him 'let go?' We'll just have to wait and see.

It was weird not seeing everyone else, but seeing that the three they focused on are my three favorites, I didn't really have a problem with it.

Who the hell was that kid that used Sawyer as a device to escape? How did he get there??!?

I'm also a little nervous about what might have happened to Kate after breakfast. She just seemed so dejected when they threw her into that cage, and the cuts on her wrists...what did they do to her?

I'm not sold on Juliet's character yet. She still seems sketchy to me. I'm just not sure I really care enough about her to want her as a main character, or as a love interest for the main character.

The highlight? The Sawyer/Kate scene. The whole episode he was trying to find out the trick in order to get himself some food. He's famished. Kate comes along and none of that matters to him anymore. He doesn't care that he's starving. He cares that she's starving. And him making her smile made my heart melt. I love them. Josh and Evi captured that moment beautifully.

I'm excited about next week! Although a bit worried for Jin and Sun in that boat! I know Sayid can defend himself, but Sun? I don't know, I'm nervous! And Ben seems pretty set on finding that boat and destroying it.

You can re-watch it and judge for yourself.

However... Not sure if this info is considered a spoiler now or not, considering it's happened, but I'm going to take precautions anyway...

omg, that's the first thing that cvame to mind when she opened the door, the first thing that came to mind was "WTF? Meredith?!?!?!?"

loved Juliet though and the woman who plays here, she was great.

the best part of the episode were the opening scene and Sawyer/Kate scene (even though i'm not SKate, is was definitly cute) the rest of the episode was kinda boring and there was no "WOW" fact, which many of you have said.

I thought this episode was great. The beginning was genius.

The thing about 'Lost' is that it usually has these jaw dropping endings, so the next day when you talk about it with people you are saying "Can you believe that ending?!!!" But today any time I had a conversation with someone about last night's show it was "Can you believe that beginning?!!" I thought they did a great job with it and I was completely convinced that we were watching a flash back of one of the Others' pre-island life, right up until they showed the plane break apart. They totally had me fooled.

I also loved the Sawyer/Kate scene. The only thing that would have made the episode better is if I had gotten a glimpse of Eko and Desmond.

I think the beginning was great too. I was sure that we were seeing a flashback until the plane appear....OMG! The Others are so scary! I love how we found out more things about them.

Juliet remind of Ellen Pompeo too.... I don't like the character at all but the actress does a very good job.

I like this episode. I always like Jack centric episodes. His flashbacks were so sad and emotional. Matt did a great job.
Jack was so worried about Kate, he only shouted her name

What's up with the guy in the other cage? He was an other? He was one of the people on the tale?

I can't wait for the next episode!

I really liked that beginning. It kind of reminded me of the beginning of season 2.

I'm still not sure whether I liked that episode or not. I thought Jack's flashbacks were a little boring and I'd have loved to see some of the other survivors.
But I think it was a good season opener, because now there are questions like: Where do the Others get their information? What do they really want? ...

But I still hope that the next episode will be better.

Hi people!! I'm new to this board but I'm a fan of Lost and I thought I sould come by to share my reactions to this episode.

Well, it had me like that: for the first 10 minutes.

I'm with all of those who tought the first scene was a flashback. And now I'm more curious than ever about the Others!!!

I didn't like the Jack flashbacks that much but they were okay. I like Juliet, can't wait to see her character developped more. And Ben/Henry, freaky as usual... Man, his eyes... they really freak me out!

A lot has been said already and I don't want to repeat it, but WHO was that kid who tried to escape in the cage in front on Sawyer's cage?????? And why did he ask him "How many people are on YOUR plane?" Was he from another plane that crashed? Is that what the Others "do"? "Studying" plane crash survivors?????

So many more questions... Can't wait for next week!!!

So... wow. The Others have their own little Club Med. Then, we have their experiments. They have their own Skinner's box on Sawyer, and psychilogical experminets on Jack and Kate, too. Also kind of a good cop/bad cop thing without the bad cop.. the bad cop being their surroundings, then Juliet coming in and offering to help Jack and trying to earn his trust.

Then we have Karl. Is he an other, or really another prisoner?

Are the Others "good", or do they believe they are? Seems like they're not all in agreement, like when that girl said sorry to Michael before hitting him, Alex, and Juliet, who looks like Jack is or will start to grow on her.

My bad! I just watched this episode and I gotta re-watch it for like 3 more times. I loved it. I love the new wow scenes again with The Others. So I was right after all, Season 3 will focus more on The Others. I wonder if we'll get a flashback for each of them too?!

I love when Ben/Henry point out to Kate that she mentioned Sawyer first. I am liking Juliet's character. She might've been a protagonist or antagonist, that I'm not sure. She seemed sweet and nice but living with The Others kinda open up new possibilities.

I didn't really dig Jack's flahback. I was more interested with what's happening to the Island.
