They couldn't do more with her in Season 6, but they knew she would be killed off in the S5 finale and weren't even planning for her to ever come back back then, so the fact that they never intended to give her a final centric episode in her final season makes me even more bitter.

Liz booked the V pilot after she found out that she would be killed off in the finale. She didn't get much advance warning, though. I don't think she knew until she got the script for the episode.
